Wind toward centerfield at PNC Park Friday

According to weather forecasts, wind will blow out toward center field at PNC Park in Pittsburgh as the Pirates host the New York Mets Friday.

Temperatures will be in the mid-to-low 60s by the time first pitch rolls around.

The probable pitching matchup features Noah Syndergaard for the Mets and Gerrit Cole for the Bucs. Oddsmakers have pegged the total at 7.

McHugh has been lights out on the road

The Houston Astros have won all four of their road starts this season when Collin McHugh takes the bump this season. The right-hander is has posted a 2-0 record with a 3.08 ERA away from Minute Maid Park.

McHugh has only surrendered one home run and nine runs during 26.1 innings of work in those games.

The 'Stros are currently +102 when they travel to Detroit Friday.

Cubs bettors enjoying brilliant May from Lester

Chicago Cubs lefty Jon Lester has been sensational in the month of May, posting a record of 4-0 with an ERA of 1.67 in four starts.

Lester has recorded wins over the Milwaukee Brewers (-182), St. Louis Cardinals (+117), New York Mets (-145) and Pittsburgh Pirates (-102) and will go for number five when the Cubs visit the Arizona Diamondbacks Friday.

The Cubbies are presently -139 on the moneyline and the total has come down to 8 from the opening 8.5.

Alvarez still winless on the season

Henderson Alvarez will take to the mound for the Miami Marlins Friday trying to get his first win of the season. In the right-handers three starts this season he is 0-3 with a 6.23 ERA while surrendering more hits (22) than innings pitched (17.1).

Though Alvarez has struggled, he has received little run support with the Marlins cashing in six runs in those three starts.

The Marlins are +100 when they host the Orioles Friday.

Lack of offense has Red Sox on a tear for Under bettors

The Texas Rangers defeated the Boston Red Sox by a score of 3-1 Thursday evening, making it eight consecutive scorelines finishing under the closing total for the BoSox.

The Sox have struggled getting runners across the plate over that stretch, scoring just 15 runs in the past eight games (1.9 runs per game). They've been shutout once and mustered just one run in three of those games.

The eight-game Under streak has the Red Sox as the seventh best under club in the bigs at 18-22-1.

Boston will open a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels at Fenway Park Friday. Rick Porcello is the probable starter for the home team, while the Angels are slated to counter with Garrett Richards. The total is presently tabbed at 8.

Marlins lose seventh-straight game as fave

The Miami Marlins are mired in a seven game losing skid and have been pegged as favorites in each of those matchups.

The Fish fell to the Arizona Diamondbacks by a score of 7-6 Thursday evening, making it the second consecutive series in which they've been swept.

The recent drought as the Marlins second-last in our Money Standings at $-1261. Only the Oakland A's are worse at $-2051.

The Marlins host the Baltimore Orioles Friday evening and are presently +103 home dogs.

MLB betting cheat sheet: Nationals churning out runs, wins
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's a comprehensive look at betting notes for this weekend’s major-league schedule:

National pride

The Washington Nationals have won five in a row (3-2 O/U) and have an 11-2 record in their last 13 games. They are also 11-2 O/U in those 13 outings. Washington has scored 205 runs on the season, second most in Major League Baseball (no other National League team has crossed the plate more than 186 times). Bryce Harper has 23 hits in his last 44 at-bats plus 10 homers and 23 RBIs since May 6.

Road woes

In his previous outing against the Chicago White Sox on May 1, Minnesota Twins’ right-hander Kyle Gibson allowed no runs in eight innings. But that came at home, where Gibson is 3-1 with a 1.40 ERA. On the road he is 0-2 with a 4.76 mark in four starts. Gibson will pitch at the White Sox on Sunday.

Brandishing the Brandons

First baseman Brandon Belt and shortstop Brandon Crawford are on fire for the San Francisco Giants. Belt has nine hits, three home runs, and seven RBIs in his last four games. Crawford has 12 hits in his last five (five-game hitting streak) and has driven in five runs during this current stretch. San Francisco has won five in a row (3-2 O/U) to surge into second place in the NL West.

Pitching Notes

* Felix Hernandez may dominate the headlines garnered by the Seattle Mariners’ starting rotation, but don’t sleep on James Paxton. The 26-year-old southpaw has turned in four straight quality starts and has not given up a single run in his last 20 innings. Paxton’s next outing will come on Saturday at the Toronto Blue Jays.

* Colorado Rockies’ righty Jordan Lyles got hit in the hand by a comebacker in his previous start, left after the first inning, and did not fare well five days later. He gave up four runs on seven hits and two walks in a Tuesday loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. Lyles, who will take the mound on Saturday against San Francisco, has seen his ERA balloon from 2.92 to 4.53 over the course of four outings.

Hitting Notes

* Pittsburgh Pirates’ third baseman Josh Harrison is on an eight-game hitting streak and has a ridiculous 16 hits in his last six contests. But he is not getting much help. The Pirates are 1-6 in their last seven overall, 1-3 O/U in their last four, and 3-7 O/U in their last 10.

* The New York Yankees have lost three straight games and are 1-7 (2-6 O/U) in their last eight. Five of their regulars are hitting .217 or worse over the past seven days. Catcher Brian McCann (.234, 4 HR, 22 RBI) has two hits in his last 17 at-bats.

Totals Streak

Miami Marlins (23-16-2 O/U): The Marlins, who fired manager Mike Redmond last weekend, are 0-4 O/U in their last four overall. They have scored a grand total of four runs in their last five games and they have also lost six in a row. This weekend’s series will pit Miami against the Baltimore Orioles, who are 1-5 O/U in their last six.

Injury Notes

* Los Angeles Angels’ first baseman Albert Pujols got drilled in the hand during the fourth inning of Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays. Pujols (.231, 7 HR, 15 RBI) left one inning later. There are no fractures and the veteran slugger is listed as day-to-day with a contusion.

* The San Diego Padres have placed center fielder Wil Myers (left-wrist tendinitis) on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to May 11. Myers (.291, 5 HR, 19 RBI) has not played since May 10. He is eligible to return next Tuesday, but that may be wishful thinking.

Cavs struggle ATS with Spooner as referee

The Cleveland Cavaliers have gone 0-4 against the spread (1-3 straight up) with referee Bill Spooner as part of the officiating crew this season.

The Cavs defeated the Boston Celtics 122-121 with Spooner as an official for their only SU victory, but failed to cover the spread as 6-point road faves back on Nov. 14.

Along with Joe Crawford and Mike Callahan, Spooner will be on the floor calling Game 2 between the Cavs and Atlanta Hawks Friday.

Henrik Lundqvist's troubles versus Lightning

New York Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist has allowed five or more goals just six times during the 2014-15 regular season and postseason, but after Wednesday's 6-5 loss in the Eastern Conference Final, four of those games have come against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Wednesday's scoreline marked the second-consecutive game in the series that the Lightning put six past the Swedish netminder. Tampa Bay tallied five in a 5-1 win against the Blushirts back on Nov. 17 and another five in a 6-3 win on Dec. 1.

The Lightning have a 2-1 lead in the series with Game 4 slated to go Friday evening in Florida. The Lightning are presently -128 and the total is 5.

Upcoming Series to Watch

St. Louis Cardinals at Kansas City Royals

How appropriate is it that during one of the main junctures of the six-month-long Major League Baseball campaign -- Memorial Day -- that the best teams from each league square off in a compelling holiday weekend series? Baseball’s best team, the Cardinals, has had quite the test over the past week, playing their last seven games against fellow contenders, the Tigers and Mets. The result? A 3-4 performance over that stretch, and it doesn’t get any easier as they travel to “The K” in Kansas City.

The Royals have continued to be one of baseball’s best stories, proving that they’re certainly no fluke whatsoever, and currently own the AL’s best record at 26-14. They’re also warming up again, having won five of six, including a two-game sweep of Cincinnati in their last series that saw them outscore the opposition 10-1. Thus, we have arguably the best two teams in all of baseball set to clash while in rhythm, in this annual battle of Missouri. These two clubs also carry the two best run differentials in the game today, as Kansas City is first with a +64 mark, while the Cardinals narrowly trail behind them at +56. It’s a product of just how good both teams have been on both sides of the ball, which could actually make this -- dare I say it -- a potential World Series preview. The Royals have the best home record in the American League at 15-6, which might give them the slight edge. They’re the standard -110 in game one tonight, with veteran Chris Young, who has been surprisingly terrific, facing Lance Lynn.

Houston Astros at Detroit Tigers

Heading into Memorial Day Weekend, there are still numerous people wondering just how real the Astros are; this series could serve to further prove their legitimacy. Theoretically, this is Houston’s toughest challenge to date, as Detroit owns the best record of any team the Astros have faced thus far. And if the opening game of this series is any indication -- which the Tigers won, 6-5, yesterday afternoon in extra innings -- it could be a key series victory for Detroit in this four-game set.

These two clubs rank third and fourth, respectively, in the American League in runs scored this season, so the over could be a popular bet as the rest of this series unfolds, although both the Astros and Tigers do not have a standout record for overs entering Friday. As to who will prevail, it’s hard to go against Houston. They’re still proving that they’re no fluke, having won 23 of their past 32 games, and have lost only one series over the past month-and-change. Detroit, meanwhile, has been relatively consistent, hovering around first place in the AL Central since the season first began. From that standpoint, this looks like a tough series to get a beat on, but there could certainly be an overriding amount of offense that aids overs.

Los Angeles Angels at Boston Red Sox

Two American League powerhouses that have underachieved entering the Memorial Day holiday reside right here in this upcoming three-game series, with the Angels and Red Sox set to do battle at Fenway. This series is worth covering not just for that reason, but also because Boston currently possesses a streak of nailing eight consecutive under bets.

Can their glaring run of unders continue through tonight’s opener? It’s tough to say. Their offense, which is obviously better than how its performed recently, will be taking on Garrett Richards in game one, and he’s been mostly tremendous in picking up where he left off before last year’s season-ending injury. Thus, it’s reasonable to think that Richards can continue to keep their bats at bay. The Angels, meanwhile, have been streaking with seven wins in their past ten games and own one of the more potent lineups in baseball. Plus, they may get Albert Pujols back in the lineup tonight. Either way, it’s an important series for both squads, who are looking to get back on track at this always-intriguing juncture of the season. Trying to tail Boston’s current run of unders might be a dangerous proposition.

Other Weekend Thoughts

-- The Reds are quietly emerging as a potential team to fade regularly. Coming into the season, I had them finishing in last place, and was not convinced by their 4-0 start to the year, so their downfall doesn’t surprise me. Since then, they’ve gone 14-22 and enter this series on a five-game losing streak. I’ll admit, their offense has looked pretty live this year, even with Devin Mesoraco in injury limbo (as in he still hasn’t been placed on the disabled list despite the fact that he hasn’t been able to catch for several weeks), but the lack of depth at the end of their starting rotation is troublesome. You could get fine value this weekend betting against them with the last-place Indians at home, who are probably better than their record. In Friday night’s opener, the Indians are +140 home ‘dogs with Carlos Carrasco on the mound, opposing Mike Leake. There’s potential there with Leake coming off a dreadful outing his last time out.

-- Remember when the Giants were 3-9 in mid-April and people started to already count out the defending World Series champs? That’s exactly why you don’t give into small sample sizes in the beginning of the season. Ever since that point, San Francisco has gone 20-9 to come within 1.5-games of first-place Los Angeles in the NL West, including carrying a five-game winning streak into tonight’s opening matchup with the Rockies. They also are coming off an impressive sweep of the Dodgers in which they shut them out in every game for only the second time in franchise history. Clearly, the Giants are cruising, especially with Hunter Pence back, while the Rockies have been a consistent fade all throughout May, losing 13 of 17 games this month. As a result, it might be a wise venture to take San Francisco for the series, who will get better value in this spot being the road team.

Fearless Prediction

-- If you’re looking for a series to latch onto a team that might be in the midst of a big run, than the upcoming Cubs/Diamondbacks series in The Desert might be right up your alley. On one side, you have the streaking Cubs, who have won eight of their past ten to regain a stronghold on second place in the NL Central. This has largely been thanks to the club’s pitching, which has yielded three runs or less in nine of their last 11. In the process, they’ve cashed five straight unders, and have a chance to continue that with ace Jon Lester on the hill tonight in the series opener. He’s facing a fellow Opening Day starter who’s generated more overs this year, however, that being Josh Collmenter. Arizona, meanwhile, has been doing a little streaking of their own, coming off a crucial four-game sweep of the reeling Marlins, putting an end to their own previous four-game losing streak. As a result, this could be a competitive series, with the Diamondbacks seeking to get back to .500, but Chicago appears poised to keep on rolling.

MLB, Reds discussing Rose role at ASG

May 21, 2015

NEW YORK (AP) - Pete Rose's role at the All-Star game in Cincinnati will be determined by Major League Baseball and the Reds after they determine what other obligations the banned career hits leader has.

Rose began work as a studio analyst for Fox this month. The network will broadcast the game, which is being played in Rose's hometown on July 14.

''We're in conversations with the Reds about the specifics of his involvement at the All-Star Game and it relates to Pete's employment, where he's committed, what he's going to be available for,'' baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred said Thursday.

''That's one of those issues that will be resolved. It's just a question of nailing the details down,'' he said.

Rose agreed to a lifetime ban in 1989 after an MLB investigation concluded he bet on Reds' games while managing the team. He has applied for reinstatement, but Manfred has not given a timetable for a decision.

Manfred doesn't think Rose's presence will detract from the game.

''The idea that any individual could overshadow the great players that we're going to have at the All-Star Game in Cincinnati is just not something that seems realistic to me,'' he said.

Rose generally is not allowed in parts of ballparks not open to fans. MLB allowed him to take part in the All-Century team announcement at Atlanta's Turner Field during the 1999 World Series and a Reds ceremony in 2013 honoring their 1975 and `76 championship teams.

Brewers' Smith ejected for rosin/sunscreen

May 21, 2015

ATLANTA (AP) - Milwaukee Brewers relief pitcher Will Smith was ejected for having rosin and sunscreen on his right forearm in the seventh inning Thursday night of a 10-1 loss to the Atlanta Braves.

Smith confirmed that he put the substance on his forearm before warming up in the bullpen on a brisk night. He said that he regretted not wiping it off before entering the game.

''It was chilly and kind of windy,'' Smith said. ''I had rosin and sunscreen on my arm. I just forgot to wipe it off before I went out and pitched. I had to kind of get ready in a hurry. I just forgot. That's it.''

With the bases loaded and one out and Atlanta leading 2-1, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez emerged from the dugout and asked the umpires to check if Smith had pine tar on his arm.

''It was about as plain as it could be,'' Gonzalez said. ''It's pretty blatant. Really. It's glistening through the lights.''

After all four umpires gathered around Gonzalez, crew chief Jim Joyce walked to the mound, touched Smith's arm and tossed the reliever from the game. Television cameras showed a shiny substance that was visible on Smith's forearm.

''He offered his arm,'' Joyce told a pool reporter. ''I touched it and immediately knew it was a foreign substance. Unfortunately for him, he has to be ejected.''

Gonzalez argued that Smith was breaking the rules after the left-hander threw a pitch that bounced in front of the plate and hit pinch-hitter Pedro Ciriaco in the leg. Smith had a count of no balls, one strike on the next batter, Jace Peterson, when Gonzalez called time and walked onto the field.

''I never went out there until he went to it (his arm),'' Gonzalez said. ''You can look at the video. The first or second pitch to Peterson, he went to it. That's when I went out to the home plate umpire to check.''

Smith indicated that it's common for pitchers to use a substance in the bullpen to help them get a better grip on the ball. He insisted that he doesn't use the substance to gain a competitive advantage.

''You want to be able to feel the ball,'' Smith said. ''That's it. It's grip. It's not going to spin more. You're not going to throw harder. You've got what you got.''

Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman said he didn't blame Smith.

''Every pitcher does it so they'll have a better grip so we won't get hit in the head,'' Freeman said.

Smith was visibly angry as he left the field, yelling at Gonzalez in the Braves' dugout.

''That's not my problem if he's upset or not,'' Gonzalez said. ''I'm worried about my team.''

Added Brewers manager Craig Counsell, ''It's very common. It goes on on the other side, I guarantee you. It's the rule. I think pitchers are using it but I guess you've got to be discreet about it.''

Joyce said he was pleased with the way Smith handled the ejection.

''I'm not going to make (the ejection) dramatic, because it is what it is and it's clear cut,'' Joyce said. ''Like I told Craig, `I have no recourse. This is immediate and fatal, unfortunately.' I just report it to the league and the league deals with it.''

Smith said he won't be surprised if he gets suspended.

''Who knows? That's MLB's decision, not my call,'' Smith said. ''I was upset. I'm a competitor. Obviously you want to stay in the game and pitch. It's a big situation. I want to be in there. I was (angry) that I got thrown out, obviously.''

Friday's Top Action

May 22, 2015

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (62-31) at ATLANTA HAWKS (68-27)

NBA Playoffs
Eastern Conference - Finals
Tip-off: Friday, 8:35 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Atlanta -1.5, Total: 196.5

The Hawks look to even up the series when they host the Cavaliers in Game 2 on Friday.

The Hawks were 2-point home favorites against the Cavaliers in Game 1, but Cleveland came away with a huge 97-88 victory. The Cavaliers were 10-for-26 from the outside and out-rebounded the Hawks 60-43. Atlanta will not stand much of a chance if they do not rebound the ball better on Friday.

The team was also just 4-for-23 from the outside and for a group that relies on outside shooting, that type of display gives them pretty much no chance of winning as well. Prior to the loss on Wednesday, the Hawks had won five straight games at home against the Cavaliers SU.

They will need to regain their composure and make sure that Cleveland doesn’t get comfortable in Philips Arena. The Cavaliers are 15-5 ATS after five straight games forcing an opponent to commit 14 or less turnovers over the past two seasons.

The Hawks, however, are 16-6 ATS on Friday nights this year and 8-0 ATS in home games revenging a straight up loss versus an opponent as a home favorite over the past three seasons.

PG Kyrie Irving (Knee) is questionable for the Cavs, who are already without PF Kevin Love (Shoulder) and C Anderson Varejao (Achilles) for the season. SF DeMarre Carroll (Knee) is questionable for the Hawks, but it’d be more surprising if he played than if he sat.

The Cleveland Cavaliers picked up a huge victory in Game 1 and SF LeBron James (26.9 PPG, 10.0 RPG, 7.7 APG, 1.8 SPG in playoffs) led the way with 31 points, eight boards, six assists and one steal in 38 minutes of action. James was dominant for Cleveland and should be able to play even better as the Hawks will not be as strong at the small forward position with DeMarre Carroll playing hurt or out. James needs to be aggressive as a scorer and also set his teammates up for some easy shots on Friday. He knows that if his team can win this game then it will be extremely difficult for them to not make it to the NBA Finals.

PG Kyrie Irving (18.9 PPG, 3.5 APG, 3.3 RPG, 1.1 SPG in playoffs) has been playing injured for Cleveland. He is questionable for this game as he is still experiencing a lot of pain in his left knee, but he did have 10 points and six assists on Wednesday. Any shots he can hit will help the team, as too much focus has been on stopping James with the rest of his team depleted.

SG J.R. Smith (13.1 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 1.3 SPG in playoffs) was the spark that the Cavaliers needed in Game 1. He outscored the entire Hawks bench by himself, pouring in 28 points with eight rebounds, three assists, a block and a steal on 10-for-16 shooting from the field and 8-for-12 shooting from behind the arc. The team needs him to be effective as a scorer the rest of the way.

C Timofey Mozgov (8.6 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 2.0 BPG) had a good game for the Cavaliers, finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds in 24 minutes. He’ll need to continue to use his body to make things tough on Al Horford.

The Hawks made a late push at the end of Game 1, but they were unable to ever regain the lead and must now win Game 2 or the series will be over fast.

PG Jeff Teague (16.2 PPG, 7.2 APG, 3.2 RPG, 1.6 SPG in playoffs) played one of his best games in the playoffs so far, finishing with 27 points, four assists and two steals in 39 minutes of action. He went right after the injured Kyrie Irving and will need to continue to take advantage of whoever is playing the point for Cleveland this series. He must, however, take better care of the basketball as he had two crucial turnovers late in the game that deflated his team.

PF Paul Millsap (15.5 PPG, 8.8 RPG, 1.7 SPG, 1.1 BPG in playoffs) struggled offensively in Game 1, going 3-for-11 from the field with 13 points. He was good on defense though and could need to guard LeBron James if SF DeMarre Carroll (16.2 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 1.2 SPG in playoffs) is unable to play.

SG Kyle Korver (11.1 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 2.5 APG, 1.5 SPG in playoffs) finally played a solid game for the Hawks. Korver had nine points, seven boards and three assists on 3-for-5 shooting from the field in Game 1. He’ll need to keep hitting shots for his team to have a chance at advancing.

C Al Horford (15.6 PPG, 9.7 RPG, 3.9 APG, 1.6 BPG in playoffs) had 16 points and seven boards on 8-for-12 shooting in Game 1. He’ll need to be even better offensively with Carroll out and Millsap likely tired from covering James.

Cavs' Irving questionable for Game 2

May 22, 2015

ATLANTA (AP) - Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving skipped the morning shootaround Friday before Game 2 of the Eastern Conference final to get further evaluation on his ailing left knee.

Irving was listed as questionable against after scoring only 10 points and sitting out the final 8 minutes of the Cavaliers win over the Atlanta Hawks in the series opener.

Coach David Blatt says Irving didn't attend the shootaround in order to meet with the team's head physician, Dr. Richard Parker.

If Irving can't go, Matthew Delladavedova will likely start at point guard for the Cavaliers. LeBron James would also take on an expanded role handling the ball.
