Top 25 roundup: No. 1 Alabama routs Mercer
November 19, 2017

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Top-ranked Alabama easily took care of business in its Iron Bowl tune-up Saturday morning, dominating Mercer 56-0 on Senior Day at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Jalen Hurts completed all seven of his pass attempts for 180 yards and three touchdowns, leaving the game in the second quarter because of the big early lead. The Crimson Tide (11-0) led 35-0 at halftime against the FCS member Bears.

Calvin Ridley caught three passes for a 103 yards and a touchdown for Alabama. Bo Scarbrough led a deep, balanced running game with five rushes for 54 yards.

The Crimson Tide plays at No. 6 Auburn next Saturday with the SEC West title on the line. Mercer (5-6) completed its season.

No. 2 Clemson 61, The Citadel 3

CLEMSON, S.C. -- Kelly Bryant passed for 230 yards and three touchdowns as Clemson bolted to a 38-point halftime lead and coasted to victory over The Citadel.

Bryant completed 17 of 22 passes in less than two quarters of play and became the third quarterback in Clemson history to win 10 games in his first year as a starter. The Tigers (10-1), who will play Miami in the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 2, improved to 32-0 all-time against FCS opponents and clinched a 10-win season for a school-record seventh consecutive year.

Clemson amassed 662 yards -- the fifth-highest total in school history -- against The Citadel (5-6), a small military school from Charleston, S.C.

No. 3 Miami 44, Virginia 28

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Malik Rosier passed for three touchdowns and rushed for another as Miami survived a dazzling passing display by Virginia's Kurt Benkert to remain undefeated.

Benkert passed for 384 yards, a season high against the Hurricanes (10-0, 7-0 ACC), but also threw an interception that Miami's Jaquan Johnson returned for a touchdown. Benkert completed his first 12 pass attempts and was 28 of 37 with four touchdowns.

Rosier was 15 of 28 for 210 yards and was intercepted twice. The Cavaliers (6-5, 3-4) lost for the fourth time in five games.

No. 4 Oklahoma 41, Kansas 3

LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Heisman Trophy hopeful Baker Mayfield passed for 257 yards and three touchdowns while battling breezy conditions as Oklahoma toppled Kansas.

Mayfield had difficulty getting his team moving as the Sooners (10-1, 7-1 Big 12), who came in with a nation-best 388.8 passing yards per game, led by only four points midway through the second quarter. The passing output was a season low for Mayfield, who had been limited to fewer than 300 yards just two other times this season. He complete 20 of 30 passes.

The inspired Jayhawks' defense, however, received no support from its offense, which was limited to 155 yards. Kansas is 1-10, 0-8.

The road victory was the 16th in a row for the Sooners, the nation's longest active streak.

No. 5 Wisconsin 24, No. 24 Michigan 10

MADISON, Wis. -- Jonathan Taylor rushed for 132 yards to boost Wisconsin past Michigan.

Alex Hornibrook completed 9 of 19 passes for 143 yards, with one touchdown and one interception for the Badgers (11-0, 8-0 Big Ten), who finish their regular season at Minnesota next Saturday. Taylor carried 19 times and lifted his rushing total for the season to 1,657 yards.

The Badgers held Michigan (8-3, 5-3) to 234 yards. The Wolverins' Brandon Peters was taken to the locker room on a cart for further examination after a hard tackle and was replaced by redshirt senior John O'Korn. Peters completed 9 of 18 passes for 157 yards.

No. 6 Auburn 42, Louisiana-Monroe 14

AUBURN, Ala. -- Jarrett Stidham passed for 235 yards and two touchdowns as Auburn routed Louisiana-Monroe.

Kerryon Johnson rushed for 137 yards and one touchdown for the Tigers (9-2), who scored 35 second-half points. Kam Martin rushed for one score and caught another for Auburn.

Brian Williams scored two touchdowns (one receiving, one rushing) for the Warhawks (4-6), who pushed the Tigers in the first half before fading. ULM was outgained 552-333.

No. 7 Georgia 42, Kentucky 13

ATHENS, Ga. -- Nick Chubb rushed for 151 yards and two touchowns as Georgia kept its playoff hopes alive by routing Kentucky.

Sony Michel rushed for 87 yards and three touchdowns for the Bulldogs (10-1, 7-1 SEC), who must defeat Georgia Tech next week and either Alabama or Auburn in the SEC title game a week later to be considered for the final four. Jake Fromm threw a TD pass to Javon Wims for Georgia.

Benny Snell rushed for 94 yards and a touchdown for the Wildcats (7-4, 4-4), who were outgained 504-261. Kentucky's Stephen Johnson was sacked three times and intercepted once.

No. 8 Notre Dame 24, Navy 17

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Brandon Wimbush and Kevin Stepherson connected for two second-half touchdown passes to boost Notre Dame past Navy.

The Midshipmen (6-4) took a 17-10 lead on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Zach Abey to Craig Scott with 7:01 left in the third quarter but enjoyed the lead for only 1:28. Abey rushed 29 times for 87 yards and a touchdown.

Wimbush capped a five-play, 78-yard drive with a 30-yard touchdown to Stepherson. The Fighting Irish (9-2) took a 24-17 lead on a 29-yard scoring pass from Wimbush to Stepherson with 11:49 remaining. Wimbush was 9 of 18 for 164 yards and also rushed for a score.

No. 9 Ohio State 52, Illinois 14

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State scored four touchdowns in the first 13 minutes and secured a berth in the Big 10 title game with an easy victory over Illinois.

Binjamin Victor caught two touchdown passes, Mike Weber rushed for 108 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries and J.K. Dobbins ran for a score in limited minutes for the Buckeyes (9-2, 7-1 Big Ten).

J.T. Barrett, playing his final home game, completed 11 of 19 passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions. The Fighting Illini (2-9, 0-8) didn't pick up a first down until there were less than three minutes left in the first half en route to losing their ninth straight.

No. 10 Penn State 56, Nebraska 44

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Saquon Barkley collected 224 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns as Penn State outscored Nebraska.

Barkley, slowed in recent weeks after a strong start to the season, rushed 17 times for 158 yards and three scores, and caught six passes for 66 yards. The Lions (9-2, 6-2 Big Ten) generated their most points since putting up 63 against Illinois in 2005.

Trace McSorley clicked on 24 of 36 passes for 325 yards and three scores, two to tight end Mike Gesicki, and ran for a score for Penn State. Tanner Lee threw for 399 yards and three touchdowns for the Cornhuskers (4-7, 3-5).

No. 11 USC 28, UCLA 23

LOS ANGELES -- Ronald Jones II rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns, redshirt quarterback Sam Darnold ran in a third and USC capped its regular season with a victory over archrival UCLA.

The Trojans (10-2, 8-1 Pac-12) already clinched a spot in the Pac-12 championship game Dec. 2, but it got all it could handle from the Bruins (5-6, 3-5). Sam Darnold completed 17-of-28 passes for 264 yards for USC.

Josh Rosen completed 10 of his passes for 204 of his 421 yards on a 32-of-52 night to Jordan Lasley, who set a career yardage high for UCLA. Lasley hauled in three touchdown receptions, including a 27-yarder in the corner of the end zone with 2:43 remaining to force an onside kick attempt, recovered by USC's Matt Lopes.

No. 12 TCU 27, Texas Tech 3

LUBBOCK Texas -- TCU turned to its defense and virtually silenced Texas Tech.

The Horned Frogs (9-2, 6-2 Big 12) held the Red Raiders (5-6, 2-6) to 327 yards of offense and zero points for the final 51 minutes.

TCU, which was without injured starting quarterback Kenny Hill and leading rusher Darius Anderson, did enough on offense behind freshman Shawn Robinson, who made his first collegiate start.

Robinson found Jalen Reagor wide open for a 12-yard touchdown that gave the Horned Frogs a 17-3 late in the third quarter. Robinson passed for 85 yards and rushed for 84.

Kansas State 45, No. 13 Oklahoma State 40

STILLWATER, Okla. -- Byron Pringle caught three long touchdown passes and returning a kickoff 89 yards for another score as Kansas State stunned Oklahoma State.

Skylar Thompson, in his second start at quarterback, threw for 204 yards and Pringle posted career best for receiving yards (166) and touchdowns as the Wildcats (6-5, 4-4 Big 12) became bowl-eligible for the eighth straight season.

The Cowboys (8-3, 5-3) lost for the third time at home, and had their faint hope of advancing to the Big 12 title game ended. James Washington turned eight catches into 159 yards and two touchdowns for Oklahoma State.

No. 15 Central Florida 45, Temple 19

PHILADELPHIA -- Central Florida turned five Temple turnovers into 24 points en route to its school-record 10th straight victory.

McKenzie Milton was pulled from the game with a little over two minutes left in the third quarter. He completed 16 of 23 passes for 208 yards and four touchdowns, and rushed for one score for the Knights (10-0, 6-0 American Athletic Conference).

The Owls (5-6, 3-4 AAC) had their modest two-game winning streak snapped and must win at Tulsa next Saturday to ensure bowl eligibility.

No. 16 Mississippi State 28, Arkansas 21

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Nick Fitzgerald threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Deddrick Thomas with 17 seconds left to cap a fourth-quarter rally and lift Mississippi State past Arkansas.

Fitzgerald completed 12 of 23 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 101 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries as the Bulldogs (8-3, 4-3 SEC) beat the Razorbacks for the fifth time in the past six meetings. Aeris Williams finished with 71 yards on 19 carries for Mississippi State.

Austin Allen completed 12 of 18 passes for 124 yards for Arkansas (4-7, 1-6), which finished with 221 yards of offense. David Williams had 75 yards on eight carries for the Razorbacks.

No. 17 Michigan State 17, Maryland 7

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- LJ Scott rushed for 147 yards and a touchdown and Michigan State grinded out a victory over Maryland.

A combination of rain and snow made conditions treacherous most of the way and forced both teams to rely on their running games. The Spartans (8-3, 6-2 Big Ten) outgained the Terrapins 271-83 on the ground, led by Scott's 29-carry performance.

Max Bortenschlager started at quarterback for Maryland (4-7, 2-6) after missing a game with a shoulder injury. He completed 13 of 25 passes for 121 yards. The Terrapins have lost three straight.

Wake Forest 30, No. 19 North Carolina State 24

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- John Wolford threw three touchdown passes to Tabari Hines as Wake Forest defeated North Carolina State.

The go-ahead points came on Wolford's 18-yard pass to Hines with 8:03 to play. Hines finished with 139 yards on eight receptions while Wolford was 19 of 28 for 247 yards for the Demon Deacons (7-4, 4-3 ACC).

The Wolfpack (7-4, 5-2) used a 14-play drive, including a fourth-and-1 conversion, to move into scoring position. Emeka Emezie, though, fumbled as he reached out for the end zone to complete a pass play, with Wake Forest recovering in the end zone for a touchback with 1:51 remaining.

No. 20 LSU 30, Tennessee 10

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Darrel Williams and Derrius Guice combined for 165 rushing yards and three touchdowns, and LSU withstood a mid-game monsoon to defeat reeling Tennessee.

Williams had a pair of touchdown runs while Guice and Danny Etling each had one touchdown run for the Tigers (8-3, 5-2 SEC). Etling was 11 of 15 for 81 yards passing. LSU has won five of six games since being stunned at home by Troy in early October.

The Volunteers (4-7, 0-7) hurt themselves with multiple miscues on special teams and struggled to put together drives in Brady Hoke's first game as interim coach. They were held to 38 yards on the ground, and Jarrett Guarantano completed 13 of 23 passes for 238 yards and a touchdown.

No. 21 Memphis 66, SMU 45

MEMPHIS -- Riley Ferguson threw for 320 yards and accounted for five touchdowns as Memphis wrapped up the AAC West title with a lightning-delayed rout of SMU.

Ferguson rushed for three touchdowns, scoring on second-half runs of 8, 12 and 2 yards. He also completed 21 of 27 passes, finding Anthony Miller for scoring strikes of 34 and 24 yards in an efficient performance as the Tigers (9-1, 6-1) gear up for a meeting against No. 15 Central Florida or South Florida in the AAC title game Dec. 2.

Memphis went up and down the field at will against the Mustangs (6-5, 3-4), finishing with 664 total yards and 33 first downs. It rushed for 333 yards and passing for 331.

No. 22 Stanford 17, California 14

STANFORD, Calif. -- Heisman Trophy candidate Bryce Love gained 101 yards on 14 carries before getting injured in the fourth quarter as Stanford held on to defeat archrival California.

The Cardinal (8-3, 7-2 Pac-12) have defeated Cal (5-6, 2-6) eight straight years. Love set an FBS record with his 11th rush of 50 or more yards this season when he broke free for a 57-yard score with 8:57 left in the third quarter.

He was forced to exit with 11:22 remaining when his left ankle was twisted on a 1-yard run. He appeared ready to reenter the game, but backup Cameron Scarlett took over and rushed for 43 yards on 11 carries in a pivotal possession for Stanford late in the fourth quarter.

No. 23 Northwestern 39, Minnesota 0

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Justin Jackson rushed 31 times for 166 yards and Clayton Thorson threw three touchdowns as Northwestern rolled past Minnesota.

The Wildcats (8-3, 6-2 Big Ten) rushed 55 times for a total of 277 yards and three touchdowns. After a scoreless first quarter, Northwestern exploded for 25 points in the second quarter, amassing 124 yards of offense while the Golden Gophers managed only 30.

Minnesota (5-6, 2-6) was shut out one week after producing its season-high scoring output in a 54-21 win over Nebraska. The last time the Golden Gophers were shut out was also at Ryan Field in a 27-0 loss to Northwestern on Oct. 3, 2015.

4th Quarter Covers - Week 12
November 19, 2017

Glancing at the scoreboard won’t tell you the whole story in most games. Here are some of the games that went down to the wire relative to the spread in the fourth quarter last week in the 12th college football weekend in late November.

Each week there are several teams that cover despite not necessarily deserving it, as well as other teams that played much better than the final score shows.

Central Michigan (-16½) 42, Kent State 23: Kent State has endured a miserable season and the home finale started poorly with a 1st quarter kickoff return touchdown allowed to immediately wipe out an early 3-0 lead. The Flashes trailed by just 11 heading into the fourth quarter and with a big run early in the final frame they trailed by only five as a heavy underdgo. Central Michigan answered with a 53-yard touchdown pass to push the lead up to 12 and with Kent State forced to go for it on 4th-and-21 from its own 9-yard-line Central Michigan was able to add another late touchdown to narrowly steal the cover.

Buffalo (-17) 40, Ball State 24: Buffalo led by 20 at Ball State heading into the fourth quarter. Early in the final frame the Cardinals connected for a 47-yard touchdown to sit within an underdog spread that climbed up to +20½ before settling back down are +17. The Cardinals failed on a 4th-and-1 play in Buffalo territory on their next possession but Buffalo was held to a field goal with about three minutes remaining despite having 1st-and-goal from the 6-yard-line as the Cardinals held on to end a long ATS losing streak.

Western Kentucky (+1½) 41, Middle Tennessee State 38:
These teams combined for 87 points and an overtime result last season but that scoring pace didn’t occur early Friday night with a 10-3 lead for the Hilltoppers through three quarters. Middle Tennessee took a 17-10 lead with a pair of scores in 20 seconds of game clock but Western Kentucky scored on 65 and 95-yard pass plays in the span of four minutes to take a seven-point lead. With five minutes remaining Middle Tennessee State scored to tie the game at 24-24 as those that had the ‘under’ feared what was likely ahead. Both teams punted twice in the final minutes and overtime was needed. Middle Tennessee State scored on a 3rd-and-12 play to start overtime and appeared to force 4th down for Western Kentucky but the Hiltoppers were handed back-to-back penalties in the secondary to get 1st-and-goal at the 2-yard-line, tying the game on the next play. Western Kentucky only needed four plays for a touchdown in the second session and Middle Tennessee State answered. The Blue Raiders stalled starting the third session and missed a field goal while Western Kentucky conservatively set-up the game-winning kick in a game that featured 35 fourth quarter points and 31 overtime points.

UNLV (+2) 38, New Mexico 35: The Rebels led by six heading into the fourth quarter before a back-and-forth final frame. The Lobos took a 28-27 lead with an 80-yard touchdown drive but UNLV slipped back in front with a field goal 30-28. Getting the ball back with just over three minutes to go Lamar Jordan led a scoring drive for the Lobos keyed by a 41-yard run, putting New Mexico up 35-30 with just over a minute remaining. UNLV would connect for a 50-yard pass play to reach the New Mexico 14-yard-line where the Rebels scored with 25 seconds remaining for the narrow win and cover, connecting on the two-point conversion for good measure as well.

Georgia (-23½) 42, Kentucky 13: Kentucky trailed by just eight nearly halfway through the third quarter and was still within the heavy underdog spread down 15 into the fourth quarter. An interception at the Georgia 12-yard-line thwarted the last opportunity for the Wildcats to get back in the game and Georgia added two fourth quarter touchdowns to slip past the home favorite spread.

Michigan State (-13½) 17, Maryland 7: Michigan State led 17-0 with a dominant rushing edge through three quarters as neither team had any success in the passing game in difficult weather conditions. Following a lousy punt Maryland put together a 59-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter to steal the cover with a 3rd down touchdown run.

Louisiana Tech (-15½) 42, UTEP 21: Louisiana Tech led 28-0 at halftime but UTEP cut that margin in half to sit within the underdog spread through three quarters. After an exchange of touchdowns early in the fourth it was still a 14-point edge for the Bulldogs who added another touchdown with just fewer than four minutes remaining and then sealed up the win and narrow favorite cover with an interception.

Ohio State (-42) 52, Illinois 14: The Buckeyes were nearly past the massive favorite spread by halftime with a 38-0 edge but a defensive score for Illinois in the third quarter proved critical. Ohio State reached 45-point advantage early in the fourth quarter but Illinois scored its first offensive touchdown of the game with about 10 minutes remaining to trim the margin back to 38 where the final score landed.

Memphis (-11) 66, SMU 45: Memphis led just 45-38 through three quarters but scored on three straight short field drives to post 21 points in the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter to eventually win by 21 for a bit of a misleading final score to clinch the AAC West.

Iowa State (-7½) 23, Baylor 13: Iowa State led by just seven through three quarters and Baylor was on the doorstep to potentially tie the game. On 1st and goal Baylor fumbled at the 3-yard-line of Iowa State on the second play of the fourth quarter. The Cyclones would add a field goal to go up by 10, slipping past the late week spread and then the Cyclones delivered another red zone turnover with an interception at the 7-yard-line to effectively seal the game.

Penn State (-27½) 56, Nebraska 44: Penn State led 42-10 at halftime for a dominant pace but while the Lions let off the gas, Nebraska kept fighting. The Huskers cut the deficit to 18 with a pair of third quarter scores but Penn State renewed its efforts with two fourth quarter touchdowns to lead by 32 with about 10 minutes remaining. Nebraska would score three late touchdowns including touchdwons at the 1:20 mark and as time expired to earn the underdog cover and a misleading 56-44 final score.

Wake Forest (-2½) 30, NC State 24:
Wake Forest led by seven at halftime and by three heading into the third quarter. The defense got a big stand early in the fourth holding the Wolfpack to a short field goal to conclude a 19-play drive. Wake Forest answered with a 73-yard touchdown drive that featured a 4th-and-2 conversion. The Demon Deacons left the door open for a painful defeat however as the extra-point was blocked. NC State drove into the red zone but wound up fumbling for a touchback to keep points off the board with just two minutes to play. Wake Forest wasn’t able to pick up a first down and had to punt with under a minute remaining. A marginal punt handed the Wolfpack good field position and a 1st down roughing the passer call added 15 more yards. NC State reached the Wake Forest 35-yard-line but Ryan Finley was intercepted on a pass to the end zone as the Demon Deacons escaped with a narrow home win.

North Texas (-1½) 52, Army 49: This was a back-and-forth game with a 101 combined points but each team scored consecutively just once. Army tied the game at 35-35 early in the fourth quarter and it felt like whoever had the ball last would win. Both teams had lengthy scoring drives for a 42-42 tie with about four minutes remaining. North Texas hit a 68-yard pass play to quickly respond and Army only needed six plays to knot the score at 49-49 with just over a minute remaining. There was too much time for the Mean Green however with North Texas hitting a game-winning field goal with five seconds to go.

Florida Atlantic (-14½) 52, Florida International 24: The underdog Panthers were within 10 midway through the third quarter but Florida Atlantic added 10 points late in the third quarter for a commanding 20-point edge. FIU connected for a 39-yard touchdown pass on an early fourth quarter 4th down play to briefly sit back within the spread but FAU answered and put the game away with two more touchdowns for a convincing final result.

Texas San Antonio (-3) 9, Marshall 7: The Roadrunners had a shutout going for 58 minutes but at the 1:31 mark Marshall connected for a 20-yard touchdown to put the Herd in front 7-6. Failing on several earlier scoring opportunities UTSA delivered in the final minute with a 40-yard field goal to win by two, not enough on the closing numbers but many got in on the Roadrunners at a lower price with a ‘pick’ or -1 common on this game.

Top 25 Notes

-- Miami-Florida had a slight hangover after their dominating win against Notre Dame a week ago. They trailed Virginia 28-14 in the third quarter before the alarm clock went off at Hard Rock Stadium. The Hurricanes then proceeded to rattle off 30 unanswered points for the 16-point win, but the Cavaliers were still able to hang on for the road cover. Miami might be 10-0 SU overall, but they're just 2-4 ATS over their past six, and 1-4 ATS in five games as a double-digit favorite this season. ... Alabama had their annual November cupcake game, essentially resting before playing in the Iron Bowl against Auburn next week. Mercer of the FCS was this season's sacrificial lamb, and it went about as well as you would expect for the Bears. The Tide led 35-0 at half, and they went on to win 56-0. Hey, at least the Bears got paid over $1 million this season to be punched around by both Iron Bowl participants.

-- Auburn struggled with Mercer earlier this season, winning just 24-10 despite being a 40-point favorite. And they nearly lost to FCS Jacksonville State a couple of seasons ago, surviving the Gamecocks in overtime back in 2015. The Tigers faced Louisiana-Monroe, the last unranked team to beat Nick Saban and Alabama back in 2007. So, did the Warhawks pull off the big upset Saturday? Nah. It was 7-7 after the first quarter, and just 14-7 in favor of the Tigers at the half. However, the 38-point favorite Tigers pulled away in the second half, although ULM was never in danger of failing to cover. As a favorite of 21 or more points, Auburn is a dismal 0-2-2 ATS this season.

-- Memphis can score with the best of them, and their high-octane offense was on display at the Liberty Bowl on Saturday against visiting Southern Methodist. The Mustangs held their own after the first quarter, and they were down just 45-38 after three quarters. However, the Tigers were too much for Chad Morris' group, running away for a 66-45 win and cover. The Tigers rank fourth in points scored (44.7 PPG) and sixth in total yards (519.5), but 113th in the FBS in defense with 452.3 yards per game allowed. More importanty, though, the Tigers are 4-0 ATS over their past four games, and 5-0-1 ATS over the past six.

-- West Virginia entered as a three-point favorite against visiting Texas. The Longhorns turned the tables on the Mountaineers, who will tumble out of the Top 25. The Longhorns improved to 4-1 ATS in five road games, while the Mountaineers slipped 0-2-1 ATS over their past three games at Milan Puskar Stadium in Morgantown. The 'under' has cashed in three straight for WVU.

-- Georgia bounced back with a 42-13 win against Kentucky in between the hedges. The 'over' has now cashed in five of the past six for UGA, while the Bulldogs are just 2-3 ATS over their past five overall. It was Georgia's first cover of the season as a favorite of 18 or more points after going 0-3 ATS in their first three tries.

Big Five Conference Report (ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC)

-- Florida State took out a season of frustration on poor ol' Delaware State of the FCS, 77-6. The Hornets were no match for the Seminoles, even a beaten and battered 'Noles team. FSU covered the biggest spread on the board Saturday (52 points), and they had scored a total of 72 points over their past four games combined. The cover was also the first of the season for the Seminoles after opening the season 0-7-2 ATS through the first nine. ... North Carolina picked up a win on FCS Western Carolina, 65-10, improving to 3-8 SU. Suddenly, the Tar Heels are 3-0 ATS over the past three outings. ... Duke put the brakes on a six-game slide, topping Georgia Tech by a 43-20 count. The Blue Devils started out 4-0 SU/ATS, then were 0-6 SU/0-5-1 ATS over the past six, before finally covering again. The 'over' result snapped an eight-game 'under' run, too.

-- Purdue shocked Iowa in Kinnick Stadium by a 24-15 score. The Boilermakers improved to 5-6 SU, and can punch their ticket to a bowl with a win at home in the Battle for the Old Oaken Bucket next week against Indiana. ... Speaking of the Hoosiers, they outlasted Rutgers 41-0 at 'The Rock' for their second straight game. Whomever wins in West Lafayette next week will win their sixth game and a trip to the postseason. IU entered Saturday's game 0-6-1 ATS over their past seven, and they're 0-4 ATS in their past four road games heading into next week's battle in Purdue.

-- Oklahoma State was dumped by Kansas State in Stillwater, as the Wildcats were the biggest underdog (+19) to win outright on Saturday. K-State became bowl eligible in grand style, improving to 3-0 SU over their past three road games, and 2-0 ATS over the past two away from home. They haven't covered back-to-back games since Sept. 2-9. ... Kansas didn't want to shake Baker Mayfield's hand before Saturday's tilt in Oklahoma, and the quarterback made them pay. He even showed them something below his waist. But the Jayhawks were able to cover for the second straight outing, and they're 3-1 ATS over their past four.

-- Oregon took care of Arizona by a 48-28 score, securing bowl eligibility in the process. They improved to 5-1 SU/4-2 ATS in six games at Autzen Stadium, which is where they'll host Oregon State in the Civil War next week. It's weird to see, but the 'under' has been hitting frequently for the Ducks. The under is 5-1 over the past six outings, and 7-2 over their past nine outings. ... Washington held off pesky Utah by a 33-30 count, never coming close to covering a 17 1/2-point number. The Huskies are a poor 2-3 ATS over their past five outings heading into the Apple Cup next week against Washington State. The Cougars were off this past weekend, and enter the rivalry game 7-2 ATS over the past nine outings.

-- South Carolina faced one of the better FCS opponents of the weekend in Wofford, a team that entered 9-1 SU. The Terriers led 3-0 after the first quarter, but the Gamecocks ended up getting some distance in the second half. ... Tennessee continues to struggle, falling 30-10 to Louisiana State. The Vols are 0-7 in the SEC, as is next week's opponent, Vanderbilt. The Vols and Commodores will battle to avoid the basement at Neyland Stadium in a game that is sure to draw in the television ratings.

Mid-Major Report

-- UCF won 45-19 on the road at Temple, avoiding the upset in a place many have fallen before. The Knights are 10-0 SU, but their cover was the first since Oct. 14, entering the game 0-3-1 ATS over the past four. ... Tulane scored a 20-17 win against Houston, keeping their dreams alive for a bowl berth. The Green Wave have won back-to-back conference games. The 'under' is 3-0 over their past three outings, too. ... South Florida was unable to cover for the fourth straight game, but they topped Tulsa 27-20 to move to 9-1 SU leading up to their huge matchup against UCF next Friday.

-- Florida Atlantic moved to 7-0 SU in Conference USA play, punching their ticket to the league's championship game with a 52-24 win against rival Florida International. The Owls are an impressive 6-1 ATS over their past seven conference battles heading into next week's regular season finale at Charlotte. ... The 49ers haven't exactly been 'Packing the Mine' this season, mostly because they're 1-10 SU. They were buried 66-21 at Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, slipping to 5-6 ATS on the season. However, they are a respectable 5-2 ATS over the past seven despite their losing ways.

-- Temperatures were around freezing with winds around 20-25 mph, so you figure the weather would favor Wyoming. However, it was the California team from the Valley, Fresno State, winning 13-7 in the frigid conditions. The 'under' has cashed in five straight for the Cowboys, and it's 9-2 in 11 games overall. ... Colorado State bounced back after their implosion last week against Boise State, 42-14 in a win over San Jose State. However, the Rams were unable to cover for the sixth consecutive game to close out their regular season.

-- Coastal Carolina posted a 13-7 win at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho in the final FBS home game for the Vandals. Idaho is leaving the Sun Belt Conference and dropping down to the FCS level to join the Big Sky Conference. ... Georgia Southern was one of just two winless FBS teams entering the weekend. They not only won, they pounded South Alabama, 52-0. It was the first shutout of an FBS opponent in Eagles' history.

Bad Beats

-- If you had the 'over' (40.5) in Minnesota-Northwestern, my condolensces. First off, things didn't get off to a great start with a scoreless first quarter. However, the Wildcats posted 25 points in the second half to get things on track. While the Gophers didn't help you at all, getting blanked in the 39-0 game, it was a blocked extra point and two failed two-point conversion attempts that made the difference.

-- If you had Rice (+240) on the moneyline, first off, you're a lot more adventurous than I. Secondly, you took a bad beat, as they held a 21-17 lead until :37 left in regulation in Norfolk when Old Dominion pulled off the 24-21 win.

-- The 'over' (77) in Arizona-Oregon looked like a sure thing, as the Ducks scored with 13:54 left in regulation to take a 45-28 lead. The Ducks drove back into the red zone, but had to settle for a 24-yard field with 8:09 to go, moving within one point of the 'over'. That's how it stayed.

Opening Line Report - Week 13
November 20, 2017

Based on the opening line and early wagering for Saturday’s Iron Bowl, the betting market is showing Auburn plenty of respect heading into its matchup against Alabama (CBS, 3:30 p.m. ET). The Tigers opened as five-point home underdogs at the Wynn, where sharp bettors backed Auburn, pushing the line down to +4 on Sunday. The number moved a half-point in Alabama’s direction on Monday, but there are only sporadic examples of the Crimson Tide being this short a favorite over the last several years of Nick Saban’s tenure.

“The game that opened your eyes was the Georgia game,” John Avello, sports book director at the Las VegasWynn, said of Auburn. “For them to manhandle Georgia 40-17, that’s just a huge accomplishment.”

Meanwhile, Avello and Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook oddsmaker Ed Salmons have different takes on the strength of unbeaten Alabama’s schedule. To Avello, the Week 1 win against Florida State has become less impressive as the Seminoles have squandered into mediocrity this season, and it’s clear to most college football observers that the SEC is down this year. Salmons, though, stresses FSU was a different team with a healthy Deondre Francois, evidenced by the 7.5-point spread in that season-opening game, and says wins vs. LSU and at Mississippi State are strong bullets on ‘Bama’s resume.

Said Avello, “They’re still Alabama, they still have quality athletes, and they still win most of their games by a significant margin. But Mississippi State (31-24) and LSU (24-10) maybe were a little tighter than they may have liked.”

Here’s a quick look at four more games on the Week 13 college football card:

Miami (-14) at Pittsburgh - Friday (ABC, 12:00 p.m. ET)

Miami survived another scare last weekend, coming back from two separate 14-point deficits against Virginia to prevail at home, 44-28. Now, the Hurricanes go on the road to play Pittsburgh eight days before the ACC championship game against Clemson.

A 4-7 team generally doesn’t strike fear into one that’s yet to lose, but Avello calls Friday’s tilt a “very dangerous” spot for Miami.

“I’m not big Miami fan. They’ve had a good season, but they seem to lose focus during the course of a game,” Avello said, offering close calls against Georgia Tech, Syracuse, North Carolina and Virginia as evidence. “You can’t trust this team. They have a rough time putting good games together.”

Avello also notices a different Pittsburgh team than the one whose only wins through its first seven games came against Youngstown State and Rice.

“Pittsburgh has more confidence now, and I think it’s going to be a tough game for Miami,” he said.

While the spread has stayed put at 14 through early wagering at his shop, “there could be dog money before it’s all said and done,” Avello said.

Ohio State (-12) at Michigan - Saturday (FOX, 12:00 p.m. ET)

The Wynn opened Ohio State -11.5 and took sharp underdog money that prompted a move to -11 on Sunday. Bettors laid the points Monday, however, pushing the line past its opener to -12.

While Michigan typically rises to the occasion and gives its fiercest rival all it can handle, Avello isn’t sure Jim Harbaugh’s squad is good enough to keep this year’s game close.

“I don’t think they are, and you normally wouldn’t hear that out of my mouth,” Avello said. “Michigan has no offense. They can’t find the right quarterback...Defensively, they’re pretty good, so what they’ll do is stay in a game, like they did with Wisconsin (a 24-10 loss), and then all of a sudden a team wears them out a little bit and gets a lead, and they have no way to come back.”

From Salmons’ point of view, Michigan will need to play a near-perfect game to put money into the pockets of their backers, something they didn’t do in their three losses – to Michigan State, Penn State and Wisconsin. Against the Badgers, for example, they allowed a punt return for a touchdown and they fumbled the ball near the Wisconsin goal line.

“The way they play offense, Michigan can’t afford to do that,” Salmons said. “It’s hard to see them score a lot of points against Ohio State, but the pace of the game is going to be slow and Michigan does play really good defense; and the crowd will be behind them early and they’ll get a lot of juice from that in the first half. They’re going to have to play a perfect, clean game, and if they do that, they’ll give themselves a chance to at least cover. If they get down early, it’s not going to go well , but Michigan’s got enough talent on defensive side to stay in the game.”

Added Avello, “We’ve seen enough of these (Ohio State/Michigan) games to know that you (shouldn’t) give too much value (when betting), but right now, I don’t know how the Michigan team’s going to be able to contain them for four quarters. Ohio State should be able to score in the 30s at least. How does Michigan get to the 30s?”

Georgia (-11) at Georgia Tech - Saturday (ABC, 12:00 p.m. ET)

Early action at the Wynn went against favored Georgia, as the Bulldogs were bet down from an opening line of -12. Bettors, however, shouldn’t count on Georgia looking ahead to next week’s SEC title game.

“They’ll be clearly focused for this game,” Avello said. “The Auburn game, I don’t know what happened to them there, that was not a good game for them, but they bounced back last week against Kentucky and played much better (in a 42-13 win).”

For bettors looking to lay the points, sooner may be better than later. Avello anticipates action on the favorite as kickoff approaches.

“I think there’ll be Georgia money,” he said. “I don’t know if the college football fan base is in love with Georgia Tech. I don’t know if they’re going to back them even as a home dog here.”

Notre Dame (-2) at Stanford - Saturday (ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET)

Notre Dame opened -2.5 at the Wynn, with immediate action on the dog moving the line to -2. It was the opposite story at William Hill, which opened ND -2 and moved the number up to -2.5.

After lighting it up for most of the season, the Irish offense has slowed considerably the last two weeks. For a team still clinging to slim hopes for a spot in the four-team College Football Playoff, it’ll have to get its offensive groove back against defensive-minded Stanford.

The primetime game will continue to draw the two-way action indicated by the early lines moves at various Vegas shops.

“I can see some good money written on this game on both sides,” Avello said.

NCAAF opening line report: Alabama opens as 4.5-point favorites for Iron Bowl
Patrick Everson

"Alabama has owned this rivalry recently, winning the game outright by double digits in five of the last six years."

Week 12 of the college football season featured a bunch of huge pointspreads and very limited good matchups. On the flip side, 13 is a lucky number, with a lot of big games on the docket this week, including a major SEC showdown. Patrick Everson checks in on the opening lines and early action with Dave Mason, brand manager for offshore sportsbook BetOnline.ag.

No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 6 Auburn Tigers (+4.5)

Alabama heads into the annual Iron Bowl carrying the only unblemished record among the contenders for the four-team College Football Playoff. The Crimson Tide (11-0 SU, 5-6 ATS) had what amounted to a bye in Week 12, taking FCS outfit Mercer to the woodshed in a 56-0 victory to cash as a massive 49.5-point home favorite.

Auburn has two losses, but also holds an impressive win over then-unbeaten Georgia in Week 11 and therefore still harbors some CFP hopes. The Tigers (9-2 SU, 5-4-2 ATS) also had a gimme game in Week 12, dumping Louisiana-Monroe 42-14 as a 38-point home chalk.

“There is little doubt that Saturday's Iron Bowl will be the biggest-bet college football game on Thanksgiving weekend,” Mason said. “Alabama has owned this rivalry recently, winning the game outright by double digits in five of the last six years. Despite ‘Bama’s recent dominance, Auburn is taking on the most bets out of any college team so far. Just 29 percent of early bettors are on the Tide.”

No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes at Michigan Wolverines (+11)

Ohio State leads the Big Ten East Division and needs to wrap up a spot in the conference championship game to remain among the CFP prospects. The Buckeyes (9-2 SU, 5-6 ATS) thumped Illinois 52-14 laying 41 points at home Saturday.

Michigan is hoping to play spoiler against the Buckeyes in The Game, one of college football’s most-storied rivalries. The Wolverines (8-3 SU, 4-6-1 ATS) hung around through three quarters at Wisconsin, but ultimately fell short 24-10 as a 6.5-point underdog in Week 12.

“Speaking of one-sided rivalries, Ohio State has a five-game winning streak over Michigan,” Mason said. “The Game will most likely be the second-most-bet game on Saturday, after the Iron Bowl. The house will be huge Wolverine fans, as 85 percent of early bettors are on the Buckeyes.”

That helped tick the line up to 11.5 Sunday evening.

No. 15 Washington State Cougars at No. 14 Washington Huskies (-9.5)

Washington State controls its fate in the Pac-12 North Division, heading into the Apple Cup showdown Saturday night. The Cougars (9-2 SU, 7-4 ATS) enter this instate clash off a bye week, after fending off Utah 33-25 as a 1-point road fave on Week 11.

Washington can’t win the division and therefore can’t make it to the Pac-12 title game, but would love to wreck its rival. The Huskies (9-2 SU, 6-5 ATS) got all they could handle from Utah on Saturday, pulling out a 33-30 victory on a last-minute field goal.

“While the Iron Bowl is getting the most early action, (this game) is getting the most lopsided early action,” Mason said. “It's looking like we will be rooting for the Huskies, considering 90 percent of early bettors are taking the Cougars and the points.”

South Florida at Central Florida (-10.5)

Central Florida remains undefeated, but has no shot at the CFP and will instead hope to stay on course for the American Athletic Conference title and a spot in a bigger-name bowl game. The Knights (10-0 SU, 6-3-1 ATS) coasted past Temple 45-19 giving 13.5 points on Saturday.

South Florida (9-1 SU, 4-6 ATS) could get to the conference title game with a victory over UCF. The Bulls topped Tulsa 27-20 in Week 12, falling way short as 24-point chalk.

“Despite their impressive SU records, neither team has been generous to their loyal bettors recently,” Mason said. “South Florida failed to cover the number in each of its last four games. Meanwhile, after starting the season on a torrid covering rate, Central Florida is just 1-3 ATS in its last four. Not a ton of early action yet, but 60 percent of early bettors are on Central Florida.”

The Knights were up to -11.5 Sunday evening.

Tuesday Maction
Kent at Akron (ESPNU, 7:00 p.m. ET)

A very busy week of college football action gets started tonight with the MAC Conference taking center stage during the early week as they have for some time now. Most of the college football world has one eye on all the huge games bettors are looking forward to this weekend (Ohio State/Michigan, Alabama/Auburn), but there are intense conference races going on across the country and the MAC is no different.

None of these schools are going to threaten the CFB Playoff picture, but winning their division and getting to the Conference Championship game is just as big a deal for these guys as it is for the big Power 5 teams.

Tonight we've got three MAC games on tap and all three of them have one team listed as a double-digit favorite. However, only one of the six teams really has anything to play for as Ball State, Miami (Ohio), Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, and Kent State will all finish the year with five wins or less regardless of what happens tonight.

That means that Kent State's opponent this evening – the Akron Zips – are the only ones with any sort of legitimate pressure on them tonight and whether or not the Zips thrive or crumble under that pressure is what bettors should be focused on for this game.

Bookamker.eu Odds: Kent State vs Akron (-15.5); Total set at 47

Thanks to an outright 37-34 win over the Ohio Bobcats last week as 14.5-point underdogs, the Akron Zips now find themselves in 1st place in the MAC East and in line for a berth in the Conference Championship game next week. That was a huge win for the Zips as it gives them the head-to-head tiebreaker over an Ohio team that has performed better more consistently this season (Ohio is 8-3 SU while Akron is just 6-5 SU), and really puts Akron in the driver's seat. The Zips are also the ones that are laying 15+ points at home this week, while Ohio has to go into hostile territory once again on Friday for a game with 5-6 SU Buffalo who is playing to become Bowl eligible. Ohio is just a 3-4 point road favorite in that game so the edge for that MAC East crown has to go to the Zips.

But while everything seems to be lining up for Akron, this team can't get ahead of themselves. A home date against 2-9 SU Kent State doesn't look dangerous at all on paper, but with this game coming in a situational spot where Akron is primed for a letdown after that Ohio win, AND has Conference Championship aspirations on the horizon, this double-digit point spread may be a little too lofty of a goal to cover.

Bettors don't seem to mind as VegasInsider.com's betting percentage numbers show more than 80% of bettors laying that hefty chalk with Akron tonight . After all, the Zips have been money makers all year (8-3 ATS) and especially in conference play (6-1 ATS), while Kent State has been an auto-fade for most with their 3-8 ATS mark and failing to score more then 23 points in every game this year against FBS competition. Kent State has also lost four in a row by at least 19 points, so how can you not lay the chalk here?

Well for one, the pressure of the situation could easily eat up this Akron team that's alternated wins and losses the past for games. Sure, they've been great against the point spread, but since Week 3 when their schedule started to get into the meat of things, they've only been the listed favorites twice and never by more than 4.5 points (2-0 ATS in those games though). In fact, the Zips have been double-digit underdogs in seven of their 11 games this year and catching all those points on a weekly basis lends itself to a quality record against the number.

But the only other time they were coming off an outright win as double-digit underdogs like they are this evening – they beat Western Michigan 14-13 as +12.5 dogs – they were promptly blown out the following week by a very good Toledo team 48-21 and failed to cover the +15 they were getting.

Kent State isn't going to blow Akron out tonight, the Golden Flashes probably won't even win outright, but Akron has shown a tendency to follow up their best performances with some average or even sub-par performances already this year, and with them being double-digit favs for the first time all season, now do you really want to lay all those points?

Make no mistake about it, Kent State is not a good football team, but as disastrous as the 2017 season has been for them, they'd still love to go out on a high note. At least putting a scare in a potential division champion that is most definitely looking past them could be considered going out on a high note. The Golden Flashes played Akron tough a year ago in a 31-27 loss as 9-point home dogs, and this game could very well end up with a similar result. Despite Kent State's struggles, their offense has actually started to show some improvement as they've scored 16+ in three straight games (20+ in their last two) and it's their highest scoring output during a three-game stretch all year, and that includes a 38-31 win in Week 2 over FCS school Howard. They'll need to score in that range to have a chance tonight and I believe they'll at least come close to 20+ again.

With the underdog 8-3 ATS the last 11 times these two have met,all the pressure of the situation on the home side here, the chance of a possible huge letdown after Akron basically made their season with last week's win, and the majority of the betting public blindly laying the chalk, I've got no problem going the other way and grabbing all those points.

This may end up being one of those games where you've got to grab the points with Kent State and plug your nose hoping they don't put up a stinker, but a backdoor cover is always a possibility in a game like this, even if the Golden Flashes don't find a way to hang around for the full 60 minutes with a likely less focused Akron side.

Akron grabs first MAC East title since '05
November 21, 2017

AKRON, Ohio (AP) Ulysees Gilbert returned a fumble 40 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the first half and Akron cruised to a 24-14 victory over Kent State on Tuesday night to claim its first Mid-American Conference East Division title since 2005.

Kato Nelson completed just 6 of 20 passes for 69 yards for the Zips (7-5, 6-2), but he found Kobe Booker open for a 25-yard scoring strike in the first quarter. After Nick Gasser nailed a 45-yard field goal, Akron led 10-0.

The Golden Flashes (2-10, 1-7) pulled within three points on Justin Rankin's 8-yard TD run in the second quarter, but Akron scored two touchdowns in the last 18 seconds to close out the half. Manny Morgan's 1-yard TD plunge pushed the lead to 17-7 and then Jamal Davis II forced a fumble by Kesean Gamble and Gilbert scooped and scored.

Rankin finished with 73 yards rushing on 21 carries and also added a 1-yard TD pass on a trick play in the final quarter to cap the scoring for Kent State. Dustin Crum added 77 yards on 12 rushes.

Akron will have to wait until Friday to see if it plays Northern Illinois or Toledo for the MAC championship.

E. Michigan edges Bowling Green, 34-31
November 21, 2017

YPSILANTI, Mich. (AP) Ian Eriksen ran for three touchdowns and Eastern Michigan held on to beat Bowling Green 34-31 on Tuesday night.

Eriksen finished with 104 yards rushing on 24 carries and Shaq Vann ran 16 times for 117 yards for Eastern Michigan (5-7, 3-5 Mid-American Conference).

Jarret Doege was 21-of-34 passing for 256 yards with two touchdowns to lead Bowling Green (2-10, 2-6). Josh Cleveland ran for 150 yards and a 2-yard score.

Doege's pair of TD passes in the third quarter gave the Falcons a 31-27 lead. Eriksen's third touchdown, a 7-yarder, ended the quarter.

Bowling Green's Jake Suder missed a 29-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. With about five minutes left, Cleveland was stopped for a 3-yard loss on a fourth-and-1. The Eagles took possession and then ran out the clock.

Miami (OH) routs Ball State, 28-7
November 21, 2017

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) Gus Ragland threw three touchdown passes and Miami (Ohio) controlled Ball State from the outset to hand the Cardinals their ninth straight loss in a 28-7 contest that served as the season finale for both teams Tuesday night.

Ragland threw first-quarter touchdown passes of 11 and 7 yards to Sam Martin and Jared Murphy. He added a 14-yard scoring toss to James Gardner in the second. With 76 seconds left before halftime, Joshua Allen intercepted Jack Milas and returned it 49 yards for a score that made it 28-0 for Miami (5-7, 4-4 Mid-American Conference).

Caleb Huntley led Ball State (2-10, 0-8) with 159 yards rushing on 25 carries.

The game marked the inaugural presentation of the Red Bird Rivalry trophy for the two schools which are separated by 70 miles. MAC expansion in the late '90s prevented them from playing every year, and before Tuesday, they'd only played eight times since 2000. The MAC granted the two `rivalry status' so they can play every year.

Ole Miss at Miss State
November 21, 2017

The Egg Bowl will be playing on Thanksgiving night for the first time since 2013 as the nation’s 10th longest uninterrupted rivalry will open the final weekend of the SEC regular season. The stakes are lower than a few seasons ago but this year’s game will carry great importance to the players and coaches.

Here is a look at Thursday Night Football as Mississippi and Mississippi State face off.

Matchup: Mississippi Rebels at Mississippi State Bulldogs
Venue: At Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Mississippi
Time/TV: Thursday, Nov. 23, 7:30 PM ET ESPN
Line: Mississippi State -16, Over/Under 62½
Last Meeting: 2016, Mississippi State (+10) 55, at Mississippi 20

After a post-game brawl in 1926 Ole Miss and Mississippi A&M (now Mississippi State) created a Golden Egg trophy for the victor although the rivalry game wasn’t referred to colloquially as the ‘Egg Bowl’ until 1979. While both programs have had some ups and downs the 2014 meeting was one of the high points of the rivalry with two highly ranked teams with #19 Ole Miss upsetting then #4 Mississippi State 31-17. This year’s game doesn’t carry the same weight but the intensity on the field will remain strong and there are plenty of storylines on the sidelines as well.

Last February Ole Miss announced a self-imposed one-year postseason ban due to allegations of violations. As more details emerged, head coach Huge Freeze resigned in July, leaving after five years with a 39-25 record though hitting a low point with a 5-7 record last season. Matt Luke has been on the staff since 2012 and was named the interim head coach for this season though he is not expected to be a serious candidate moving forward. The Rebels are a bit handcuffed in the upcoming hiring season as the NCAA hasn’t made a final ruling on the case and there could be further sanctions against the school.

Mississippi State was expected to sit at the bottom of the SEC West this season but Dan Mullen has the Bulldogs at 4-3 in league play and 8-3 overall, certainly looking like the 4th or 5th team in the SEC pecking order in the bowl season as an attractive bowl bid should be coming to the program. Despite being on the hot seat himself only a few years ago Mullen has emerged as hot property after sustained success in Starkville, now 69-45 in nine seasons with his quarterback development reputation highly regarded. That has meant his name has been thrown around as a possible candidate for several of the high profile vacancies around the country with his decision capable of having a domino impact at several programs.

The three losses for Mississippi State this season have come against the three SEC teams still in the running for a SEC championship and a College Football Playoff spot, falling early in the season in lopsided results at Georgia and at Auburn. Mississippi State rallied to win the next four games and two weeks ago gave #1 Alabama a great test with a 31-24 loss in Starkville, a game the Bulldogs led into the 4th quarter and lost in the final minute. That has been the only home loss for Mississippi State this season with a notable 37-7 home win over LSU in September on the resume.

Nick Fitzgerald is 11th in the SEC in quarterback rating but that doesn’t do justice to the season he has had. While not a prolific passer he has thrown for 15 touchdowns and should eclipse 2,000 passing yards by season’s end and his completion rate has gone up slightly compared with last season. Fitzgerald’s main value is his size and mobility at 6’5” and rushing for 968 net yards at this point in the season on 6.1 yards per carry. He has accounted for 29 touchdowns this season and can carry his team at times with junior running back Aeris Williams also likely to top 1,000 yards rushing this season as the other major piece of the offense.

On defense junior Montez Sweat has nine sacks to match the lead in the SEC and Mississippi State is ninth nationally in total defense surrendering only 297 yards per game. The Bulldogs are 20th in the nation in scoring defense allowing 19.5 points per game and five times this season the Bulldogs have allowed 14 or fewer points.

The opportunity for Mississippi State in this matchup should come on the ground as Ole Miss rates 118th nationally allowing 5.4 yards per rush. The Rebels have allowed 35.2 points per game on the season but the offense has been able to win several higher scoring shootouts.

The season started poorly for Ole Miss with losses in the first three major conference tests of the season including falling 66-3 at Alabama and 44-23 at Auburn. Sophomore quarterback Shea Patterson was on pace to be one of the most productive passing quarterbacks in the nation but he was injured in the October loss to LSU. While a lighter stretch of the schedule has played a role, junior Jordan Ta’amu has taken over the position with even stronger numbers, completing nearly 70 percent of his passes on 9.5 yards per attempt and he delivered a signature performance in the narrow win at Kentucky in early November.

Senior Jordan Wilkins has gained 6.1 yards per carry out of the backfield and the Rebels have leaned on him more in recent weeks with 271 yards the past two games as he could have a shot to eclipse 1,000 yards on the season this week going against a fairly stingy MSU run defense. Sophomore A.J. Brown has been the top receiver with 1,085 yards on 69 catches including 10 touchdowns despite missing a game early in the season.

While the Rebels won’t make a bowl game they can reach 6-6 with a win in the finale for a season of improvement after going 5-7 last season after losing in the Egg Bowl last season in what was a bowl elimination game. The Rebels have only played one road game since the first weekend in October but they did win that game at Kentucky for the only road win of the season and the Rebels only had one road win last year.

For Mississippi State this is a chance to win consecutive Egg Bowls for the first time since 2011 and a chance to bolster its postseason position. Most projections call for the Bulldogs to face a prominent Big Ten team like Penn State or Michigan in either the Outback Bowl or Citrus Bowl for an attractive high profile New Year’s Day draw for the program. A loss could mean sliding to potentially the December 30 Liberty Bowl vs. a Big XII team.

Last season: This was a bowl elimination game between 5-6 teams last season in Oxford. It was a back-and-forth first half with a 27-20 lead for Mississippi State. That score held until just over five minutes to go in the third quarter before the Bulldogs went on a 28-0 run the close the game for a somewhat misleading 55-20 final result. Mississippi State had just a 566-528 yardage edge and benefitted from a 2-1 turnover edge including a 4th quarter pick-six. Fitzgerald rushed for 258 yards and accounted for five touchdowns while Patterson threw for 320 yards but had two interceptions to match his two touchdowns.

Historical Trends:

-- Mississippi State has won and covered in five of eight meetings since 2009.

-- Mississippi State hasn’t been a double-digit favorite in this series since 2011 and before that not since 1981.

-- The Bulldogs are 7-2 S/U in Starkville in this series since 1999 though just 5-4 ATS and they lost the last home meeting in 2015.

-- Under Mullen the Bulldogs are 39-1 S/U as a double-digit favorite but just 20-20 ATS.

-- In that span Mississippi State is 40-20 S/U at home with a 33-25-1 ATS record at Davis Wade, going 5-1 ATS at home this season.

-- Ole Miss is 15-27 S/U and 18-23-1 ATS on the road since 2009. Going back to 1997 the Rebels are 29-18-1 ATS as a double-digit underdog.
