Houston Gonna Have Problems?

Cincinnati plays host to Houston in the Queen City on Thursday night. The Cougars have really struggled against the number, going 5-11 ATS in their past 16 against teams with a winning overall record, 1-4 ATS in their past five as a road underdog and 0-5 ATS in their past five overall as an underdog. The last time they met the Bearcats they were turned back by a 67-58 score at home on Jan. 7, failing to cover as a 2 1/2-point underdog.

The Bearcats have also struggled against the number lately, going 1-5 ATS in their past six games overall. However, they have won three of their past four and 18 of their past 20 games overall. Cincinnati is a solid 5-2 ATS in their past seven at home against teams with a winning road mark, but they're just 1-5 ATS in their past six league games and they're 0-5 ATS in their past five against teams with a winning overall record.

Bettors have been cashing at the window with Houston 'over' results lately, as the total has gone over in seven in a row for the Cougars. However, the first meeting went well under the total of 132. The over is also 10-1 in Cincinnati's past 11 games at home, although the under is 37-14 in their past 51 at home against teams with a winning road mark.

Wisky Rebellion

Wisconsin welcomes Iowa to Madison, as the reeling Badgers look to get back on track. Wisconsin took it on the chin in a pair of road games at Ohio State and Michigan State last week, losing both outings by 10 points. They were favored in each, but probably shouldn't been considering how they have struggled. Wisky is 1-4 SU over their past five games, and 1-6 ATS over their past seven outings.

Home should get the Badgers rolling again. They're 15-1 SU at Kohl Center this season, and a respectable 8-4 ATS in their past 12 in front of the home fans. On the flip side, the Hawkeyes have struggled on the road recently. While they topped an equally struggling Maryland team last time out on Saturday, Iowa is just 2-7 SU/ATS over the past nine true road games. Over their past 16 road games Iowa has managed a dismal 4-12 ATS showing.

While the road team is 5-1 ATS in the past six in this series, and the underdog has connected in eight of the past 10 meetings, the Hawkeyes are 0-4 ATS in their past four tries against the Badgers. Total bettors might want to look to the 'over', which is 7-2 in the past nine meetings. The over is also 7-2 in Iowa's past nine against teams with a winning straight up record and 10-2 in Wisconsin's past 12 against teams with a .500 record or better.

Big MAAC

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) gets underway and there are some good games on the board.

In the 8-9 matchup in Albany it will be Niagara and Quinnipiac do battle in what Vegas figured to be a coin-flip game. But is it? The Bobcats of QU swept the Purple Eagles for two of their 10 wins overall, including an 89-81 victory in the most recent meeting Feb. 4. While the Bobcats are 0-5-1 ATS over their past six, they're 2-0 ATS in two meetings with Niagara this season.

In the 7-10 game, Canisius is favored by 7 1/2 points to oust Marist. The Golden Griffins dropped a tough one in Poughkeepsie against the Red Foxes just last Sunday, 76-74. However, Marist was no match for Canisius in the first meeting, losing 91-58 in Buffalo. Canisius is just 5-8 ATS in 13 games since that blowout win while Marist is a respectable 3-1 ATS in their past four, all as underdogs.

In the 6-11 battle, Rider is favored by six to send Manhattan packing. The Broncs roll into Albany on a three-game winning streak, including a 93-82 win over the Jaspers in the most recent meeting on Feb. 22. The teams split a pair of meetings, as the Jaspers were victorious back on Jan. 13 at home by a 76-73 score. Rider enters 5-1-1 ATS over their past seven with the 'over' going 4-0 in the past four. The Jaspers are just 2-7 ATS over their past nine, and the over is 3-1 in their past four outings.

Southern Comfort

UNC-Asheville battles Campbell in 2-7 matchup in Rock Hill, S.C. in the Big South Conference Quarterfinals. The Bulldogs swept the season series by an average of 14 1/2 points. The Camels won their opener against Presbyterian by an 81-62 score, covering a 13-point number, but they're on the opposite side of that number in this one. UNCA is favored by 12 1/2 points as of early Thursday morning.

Top-seed Winthrop hosts Charleston Southern, and the Eagles are expected to soar. They swept the Buccaneers, winning in the Low Country by 16 points on Dec. 29, 2016, and by 14 points in the Upstate on Feb. 23. Meanwhile, Top-seed Liberty takes on Radford, and they're favored by four. The Flames swept the Highlanders in the regular season, winning by an average of five points. However, the meeting at Radford required overtime.

Sunny Skies

Top seed Florida Gulf Coast hosts 5-seed Kennesaw State in Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Semifinals action. #DunkCity has held steady as a 12-point favorite over the Fighting Owls, who edged 4-seed USC-Upstate by a bucket in the opening round. The Fighting Owls played the Eagles fairly tough, falling by 12 on Feb. 11 in Naples and just by three in a home game on Jan. 12.

In the 2-3 matchup, Lipscomb meets North Florida, and the 20-win Bison are favored by nine points over the Ospreys of UNF. North Florida enters four games under .500, but they have won three of their past four outings, including a 11-point confidence-building win at Lipscomb on Feb. 16. In fact, UNF swept the two-seed this season in two regular season meetings, winning by an average of 8.5 points.

Conference Tourney Notes
March 1, 2017

Following is our annual look at conference tourneys and chances of the "board" conferences sending multiple entries to the NCAA Tournament. Teams have been divided the teams into three categories -- Solid, Looking Good, and Bubble.

Solid is self-explanatory.

Looking Good teams can expect an NCAA invitation as long as they don't slump badly in the next few weeks.

Bubble teams, however, remain at the mercy of the Tournament Committee, and desperately need every win down the stretch to keep their Big Dance hopes alive.

(We're a bit generous in the "bubble" designation, with teams expected to enter the conversation even briefly granted such status.)

Keep in mind that EVERY Division I team can now qualify for an automatic Big Dance berth by winning its conference tournament. With the Ivy League finally relenting and adding its own four-team tourney, every conference now has a postseason event. In the meantime, as always, the number of upsets in conference tournaments can alter the look of the Big Dance.

Also included below are conference tournament sites and dates; Conference Power Rankings (thru Feb. 22); and last year's postseason participants, including NCAA, NIT, CBI, CIT, and VEGAS 16/8 action.

Note that when referencing last year's NCAA Tourney, we have reverted to the new/old designations, wherein the play-in games are referred to as the First Four, the sub-regionals referred to as the first and second rounds, etc., as the NCAA thankfully changed back to its former designations a year ago.

AMERICAN
Solid...Cincinnati.
Looking Good...SMU.
Bubble...Houston.

Conference Power Rating: 7th.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 9-12 at XL Center, Hartford, CT.

Last year...NCAA-4 (UConn-2nd round, Cincinnati, Temple, Tulsa-First Four); NIT-1 (Houston).

Notes.
..The American looks a bit less crowded this season, likely just a 2-bid league unless SMU or Cincinnati don't win in Hartford. Houston is still hanging on to the edge of the bubble as March approaches.

ACC
Solid...North Carolina, Florida State, Duke, Virginia, Louisville, Notre Dame.
Looking Good...Miami-Fla., Syracuse, Virginia Tech.
Bubble...Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Clemson.

Conference Power Rating: 1st.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 7-11 at Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY.

Last year...NCAA-7 (North Carolina-Runner-up, Syracuse-Final Four, Virginia-Elite Eight, Notre Dame-Elite Eight, Duke-Sweet 16, Miami-Fla.-Sweet 16, Pittsburgh). NIT-3 (Georgia Tech-Quarterfinals, Virginia Tech-2nd round, Florida State-2nd round).

Notes
...Could the ACC match the Big East from six years ago as the most-heavily represented loop (11) in NCAA Tournament history? Note the first-ever foray into the Big Apple with the conference Tourney in Brooklyn.

ATLANTIC TEN
Looking Good...Dayton, Virginia Commonwealth.
Bubble...Rhode Island.

Conference Power Rating: 8th.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 8-12 at PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, PA, home of NHL Penguins.

Last year...NCAA-3 (Saint Joseph's-2nd round, Virginia Commonwealth-2nd round, Dayton); NIT-3 (George Washington-Champion, Davidson, St. Bonaventure); CBI-1 (Duquesene-2nd round); CIT-1 (Fordham).

Notes...Like the American, the A-10 has the look of a 2-bid league with Dayton and VCU, while Rhode Island gamely hangs on to the bubble into late February. The tournament moves to Pittsburgh this season after recent years at Barclay's Center in Brooklyn.

BIG EAST
Solid...Villanova, Creighton, Butler.
Bubble...Marquette, Seton Hall, Xavier.

Conference Power Rating: 3rd.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 8-11 at Madison Square Garden, New York City, NY.

Last year...NCAA-5 (Villanova-Champion, Butler-2nd round, Providence-2nd round, Xavier-2nd round, Seton Hall). NIT-1 (Creighton-Quarterfinals).

Notes...Seton Hall helped its at-large cause greatly with its recent wins over Creighton and Xavier, with the latter result a bit worrying for the Musketeers, now minus key cog Edmond Sumner and faltering of late. So we've moved the "X" from Looking Good into Bubble status. Georgetown now seems officially off of the bubble after its midweek home loss to DePaul.

BIG TEN
Solid...Wisconsin, Maryland, Purdue.
Looking Good...Northwestern, Minnesota, Michigan, Michigan State.
Bubble... Illinois.

Conference Power Rating: 4th.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 8-12 at Verizon Center, Washington, D.C.

Last year...NCAA-7 (Indiana-Sweet 16, Maryland-Sweet 16, Wisconsin-Sweet 16, Iowa-2nd round, Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue); NIT-1 (Ohio State-2nd round).

Notes...The Big Ten is generating plenty of discussion, especially with a Big Dance regular like Indiana looking to have slipped off of the bubble. Though wobbling a bit down the stretch, this also looks to be the year that Northwestern makes its first-ever Dance appearance. Northwestern in and Indiana out, eh? Note that the Tourney moves out of the Midwest for the first time, landing at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C., where Maryland will have a regional edge.

BIG 12

Solid...Kansas, Baylor, Iowa State, West Virginia.
Looking Good...Oklahoma State.
Bubble...Kansas State, TCU, Texas Tech.

Conference Power Rating: 2nd.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 8-11 at Sprint Center, Kansas City, MO.

Last year...NCAA-7 (Oklahoma-Final Four, Kansas-Elite Eight, Iowa State-Sweet 16, Baylor, Texas, Texas Tech, West Virginia).

Notes...The Big 12 will again be well-represented in the Dance, with several of its candidates likely riding the bubble all the way into Selection Sunday. Though Baylor's chances of landing on the top line have taken a couple of hits in recent weeks, Kansas still looks a good bet for a top seed in the Midwest Regional.

BIG WEST
Conference Tournament winner will be only Big Dance rep.

Conference Power Rating: 30th.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 9-11 at Honda Center, Anaheim, CA (home of the NHL Ducks).

Last year...NCAA-1 (Hawaii-2nd round); NIT-1 (Long Beach State); CIT-1 (UC Irvine-Runner-up); VEGAS 16/8 (UC Santa Barbara).

Notes.
..For what would be only the second time since the at-large play-in games were initiated, the Big West could be involved in one of those 16 vs. 16 First Four games in Dayton.

COLONIAL
Bubble...NC-Wilmington.

Conference Power Rating: 12th.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 3-6 at North Charleston Coliseum, Charleston, SC (not the home of College of Charleston, which plays at TD Arena).

Last year...NCAA-1 (NC-Wilmington); NIT-1 (Hofstra); VEGAS 16/8 (Towson).

Notes...UNCW's at-large candidacy was greatly reduced by losses vs. William & Mary, Charleston & Elon within the past four weeks. The Seahawks will almost assuredly have to win the CAA Tourney to gain passage to the Big Dance. After three years at Baltimore's Royal Farms Arena, once known as Baltimore Civic Center in the '60s and early '70s when it was the home of the NBA Baltimore Bullets, the conference tournament begins a three-year stint in Charleston.

CONFERENCE USA

Bubble...Middle Tennessee.

Conference Power Rating: 22nd.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 8-12 at Legacy Arena, Birmingham, AL (not the home court of UAB, which plays at Gene Bartow Arena).

Last year...NCAA-1 (Middle Tennessee-2nd round); NIT-1 (UAB); VEGAS 16/8 (Old Dominion-Champion, La Tech).

Notes...MTSU appears to be one of the few mid-majors with a chance at a Big Dance at-large bid if it does not win its conference tourney.

HORIZON
Bubble...Valparaiso.

Conference Power Rating: 19th.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 3-7 at Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, MI.

Last year...NCAA-1 (Green Bay); NIT-1 (Valparaiso-Runner-up); VEGAS 16/8 (Oakland-Runner-up).

Notes
...After last Friday's loss to Oakland, and surrendering top seed at "the Joe" to the Golden Grizzlies, Valpo might have already played itself off of the edge of the bubble. After years of being conducted at campus sites, the Horizon Tournament begins a second year in Detroit at the soon-to-close Joe Louis Arena, home of the NHL Red Wings. Next year, the Tourney is slated to move into the new Detroit Events Center, currently under construction.

IVY
Conference Tourney winner will be only Big Dance rep.

Conference Power Rating: 20th.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 11-12 at the Palestra, Philadelphia, PA (home court of Penn).

Last year...NCAA-1 (Yale-2nd round); NIT-1 (Princeton); CIT-1 (Columbia-Champion).

Notes...The Ivy finally relents with its first-ever tourney, which will include the top four teams and takes place at the Palestra in Philadelphia. Though the Ivy has had an unofficial playoff of sorts a couple of times in recent years with one-game playoffs after ties for the regular-season crown. Princeton, Harvard, and Yale currently appear very good bets to land three of the four slots at the Palestra.

MID-AMERICAN

Bubble...Akron.

Conference Power Rating: 13th.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: first round March 6 at campus sites; quarters, semis, and Final March 9-11 at Quicken Loans Arena, Cleveland, OH.

Last year...NCAA-1 (Buffalo); NIT-1 (Akron); CIT-2 (Ball State-Quarterfinals, Central Michigan); CBI-1 (Ohio-Semifinals); VEGAS 16/8-1 (Northern Illinois).

Notes...The MAC has not sent multiple teams to the Big Dance since 1999, when Kent State and Miami-Ohio qualified. That's not likely to change, as top at-large contender Akron just suffered a trio of damaging losses the past three weeks, and has yet to notch a Top-100 win this season.

MISSOURI VALLEY

Looking Good...Wichita State.
Bubble...Illinois State.

Conference Power Rating: 11th.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: ("Arch Madness") March 2-5 at Scottrade Center, St. Louis, MO.

Last year...NCAA-2 (Wichita State-2nd round, Northern Iowa-2nd round).

Notes...After years as the flagship mid-major conference, the Valley has been a one-bid league at times in recent seasons and might be again this year unless some rep other than Wichita wins at "Arch Madness" in two weeks. Other than the Shockers, who appear a near-certainty into the field of 68, Illinois State is the only other Valley rep that would be under consideration for an at-large on Selection Sunday.

MOUNTAIN WEST

Bubble...Nevada.

Conference Power Rating: 9th.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 8-11 at Thomas & Mack Center, Las Vegas, NV (home court of UNLV).

Last year...NCAA-1 (Fresno State); NIT-1 (San Diego State-semifinals); CBI-1 (Nevada-Champion).

Notes...How the mighty (or near-mighty) have fallen, as the MW is almost certainly a one-bid league for the second straight year. Last year was the first time the league received only one Big Dance bid since its inception in 1999. As recently as 2013, the Mountain was a five-bid league!

Pac-12

Solid...Arizona, Oregon, UCLA.
Looking Good...Southern Cal, Cal.
Bubble...Utah.

Conference Power Rating: 6th.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 8-11 at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, NV.

Last year...NCAA-7 (Oregon-Elite Eight, Utah-2nd round, Arizona, Cal, Colorado, Southern Cal, Oregon State); NIT-1 (Washington-2nd round).

Notes...A very good chance there will be three Pac-10 protected seeds (Oregon, Arizona, and UCLA) in the Dance. After a four-year run at the MGM Grand Garden, the Pac-12 Tourney moves across the street on the Strip in Vegas to the brand-new T-Mobile Arena, which will also be the home ice of the NHL expansion Golden Knights starting in October.

SEC
Solid...Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina.
Looking Good...Arkansas.
Bubble...Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Vanderbilt.

Conference Power Rating: 5th.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 8-12 at Bridgestone Arena, Nashville, TN (home of the NHL Predators).

Last year...NCAA-3 (Texas A&M-Sweet 16, Kentucky-2nd round, Vanderbilt-First Four); NIT-4 (Florida-Quarterfinals, Georgia-2nd round, South Carolina-2nd round, Alabama).

Notes...We're stretching the bubble to include the likes of Vandy and Tennessee, though we believe the SEC will do a bit better than the mere three entries it received to the Dance last March.

SUN BELT

Bubble...UT-Arlington.

Conference Power Rating: 15th.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 8-12 at Lakefront Arena, New Orleans, LA.

Last year...NCAA-1 (Little Rock-2nd round); CIT-3 (UL-Lafayette-2nd round, UT-Arlington-2nd round, ULM).

Notes....The Belt has not been a multi-bid league since 2008, when Western Kentucky and South Alabama qualified, and is likely not going to be again this season, though UTA could at least enter the at-large conversation with the Selection Committee if the Movin' Mavs make the final and lose in the Belt Tourney at New Orleans.

WEST COAST
Solid...Gonzaga, Saint Mary's.

Conference Power Rating: 12th.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 3-8 at Orleans Hotel Arena, Las Vegas, NV.

Last year...NCAA-1 (Gonzaga-Sweet 16; NIT-2 (BYU-Seminfinals, Saint Mary's-2nd round); CBI-1 (Pepperdine).

Notes...The only likely intrigue at the WCC tournament will be if Gonzaga can maintain its stellar record and enter the Dance as the top overall seed, though the "pre-selection" shows seem to indicate the Committee is more likely to merely award the Zags with the top seed in the West Regional...if Mark Few's team stays with just one loss, that is. After several near-misses in recent years, Saint Mary's will not have to sweat its bid this Selection Sunday.

Included below is tournament info for the remainder of the D-I conferences, with any clear-cut favorite accompanied by an *.

Big 12 seeds to settle: WVU and Iowa State going for 2nd
March 2, 2017

Some things to watch this weekend in the Big 12:

GAME OF THE WEEKEND: No. 24 Iowa State (20-9, 12-5 Big 12) at No. 10 West Virginia (23-7, 11-6) on Friday night to determine the No. 2 seed in next week's Big 12 tournament. The Cyclones have a six-game winning streak , and the Mountaineers would like to get a little momentum going into tournament time. West Virginia lost by 11 at Baylor on Monday, two days after shooting a season-low 37 percent in a one-point win when the tiebreaking free throw came with 4.8 seconds left after a questionable foul call.

LOOKING AHEAD:
There is still a lot of seeding to be settled the conference tournament in Kansas City. Top-seeded and top-ranked Kansas (27-3, 15-2) is set after clinching its 13th consecutive Big 12 title. Oklahoma State (20-10, 9-8) is locked in as the fifth seed. As for everybody else ... Baylor (24-6, 11-6) can't finish second, but is tied with West Virginia for third. Getting into the top six means a first-round bye next week, but only one team from the trio of Kansas State (18-12, 7-10), Texas Tech (18-12, 6-11) and TCU (17-13, 6-11) will avoid playing on the first day. Oklahoma and Texas are both 4-13, so they will definitely be playing Wednesday.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: Is eight enough? Kansas State coach Bruce Weber believes any Big 12 team that wins eight conference games should be in the NCAA Tournament. The Wildcats have to win their home finale Saturday against Texas Tech to become the sixth team with eight wins in conference play - and avoid a first-round game in Kansas City. ... Things have been mostly close in the Big 12, with 61 of 85 conference games (72 percent) decided by 10 points or less, including 43 of the past 58. ... West Virginia leads the nation in turnover margin (plus 9.2), turnovers forced (21.4) and steals (10.9).

PLAYER TO WATCH:
Iowa State senior guard Monte Morris has 63 assists with only five turnovers in the last eight games. Morris' 6.2 assist-to-turnover ratio would shatter the overall Big 12 record of 4.8. In his home finale Tuesday against Oklahoma State, he had 12 points, nine rebounds and 11 assists. With his three steals in that game, Morris passed Jeff Hornacek to become the school's career leader in that category.

ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE:
The Big 12 women's tournament starts Friday in Oklahoma City . Second-ranked Baylor won its seventh consecutive regular-season title, and the Lady Bears will try to win the Big 12 tournament for the seventh year in a row and ninth time overall. ... For the first time in league history, there were no ties in the conference standings. Every team had a different league record. ... Iowa State entered the tournament with its first five-game Big 12 winning streak since 2008-09.

Best of the best: Time to decide league players of the year
March 2, 2017

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) For some of college basketball's top leagues, there's little doubt who should be the player of the year in the conference. In others, there are multiple worthy candidates that can walk away with the honor.

The five power conferences - the Big 12, Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, Pac-12 and Southeastern Conference- and the Big East wrap up regular-season play this weekend. Here's a look at players down to their final chances to make a case for top individual awards:

---

ACC

The ACC has a wide-open player of the year race with Duke's Luke Kennard, North Carolina's Justin Jackson and Wake Forest's John Collins leading the way.

Kennard, a 6-foot-6 sophomore, has had a breakout season. He ranks second in the ACC at 19.8 points to go with 5.3 rebounds. He's also shooting 50 percent from the floor, 85 percent from the foul line and 45 percent from behind the arc.

Jackson, a 6-8 junior, is averaging 18.4 points for a team that has already clinched the No. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament. Jackson and Kennard meet Saturday night in a rivalry game that could tip the balance in the race.

Then there's Collins, a 6-10 sophomore who has become an efficient interior scorer. He's averaging 19.3 points and 9.8 rebounds, while his 25-point, 11-rebound effort led Wednesday's upset of No. 8 Louisville while marking his 12th consecutive 20-point performance.

''Hopefully I can go on and get that award,'' Collins said this week, ''but it definitely shows me I'm doing something right.''

---

BIG 12

This race appears settled - see Kansas' Frank Mason III.

The 5-11 senior made his mark early by hitting the last-second shot to beat preseason No. 1 Duke in November. He's gone on to average 20.3 points and 4.9 assists to guide the Jayhawks to No. 1 in this week's Top 25.

Kansas coach Bill Self praised Mason's toughness after Monday's Senior Night win against Oklahoma, showering him with some high praise as the ''best guard I've ever coached.''

Baylor's Johnathan Motley (17.5 points, 9.7 rebounds) would appear to be a longshot candidate after guiding the Bears to program's first No. 1 ranking earlier this year.

---

BIG EAST

Villanova's Josh Hart is a top contender for national player of the year while leading the race for the top honor in the Big East.

The 6-5 senior and Associated Press preseason all-American is averaging 18.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists while shooting nearly 51 percent from the field.

He had 37 points and 11 rebounds against Notre Dame in December as well as a triple-double against St. Joseph's, and has the reigning NCAA champions on course for a No. 1 seed in this year's tournament.

---

BIG TEN

Purdue's Caleb Swanigan has made himself the clear player of the year front-runner in the Big Ten.

The 6-9 sophomore is averaging 18.6 points and 12.5 rebounds (second nationally) while tallying 24 double-doubles (tied for the most in Division I through Tuesday's games). That includes four 20-point, 20-rebound performances to help the No. 16 Boilermakers claim at least a share of the league regular-season crown.

Iowa senior guard Peter Jok (Big Ten-best 20.6 points), Maryland junior Melo Trimble (16.9 points) and Wisconsin sophomore forward Ethan Happ (14.1 points, 9.0 rebounds) are the leading contenders behind Swanigan.

---

PAC-12

Like the ACC, there's a close race in the Pac-12 for player of the year honors.

There's freshman point guard Lonzo Ball - a two-time league player of the week - leads No. 3 UCLA's high-scoring offense. Sixth-ranked Oregon junior forward Dillon Brooks, an AP preseason all-American averaging 15.6 points, has captured player of the week honors three times.

And 7-foot freshman Lauri Markkanen (15.4 points, 7.4 rebounds) has helped No. 7 Arizona stay near the top of the league standings.

Ball - the nation's assist leader at 7.6 per game - had 19 points, even rebounds and eight assists in Wednesday's win against Washington. The Bruins close the regular season against Washington State on Saturday.

That same day, Brooks and the Ducks visit Oregon State, while Markkanen and the Wildcats travel to Arizona State.

---

SEC

The SEC has a couple of worthy player of the year candidates, led by high-scoring freshman Malik Monk of league-leading Kentucky.

Monk is averaging 21.7 points, second only to Washington's Markelle Fultz among all freshmen and 12th overall in Division I. He scored 20 of his 27 points after halftime Tuesday to help the No. 9 Wildcats rally from 19 down to beat Vanderbilt in their biggest comeback of the John Calipari era.

South Carolina senior guard Sindarius Thornwell has also put himself in contention. He's second to Monk in scoring at 21 points per game while averaging 7.3 rebounds to put the Gamecocks within reach of their first NCAA Tournament bid since 2004.

Both teams close on the road Saturday. Kentucky visits Texas A&M, while South Carolina travels to Mississippi.

DALLAS (AP) Semi Ojeleye scored 26 points with a perfect night from the field and No. 14 SMU clinched at least a share of the American Athletic Conference title with a 93-70 victory over Tulsa on Thursday night.

Ojeleye made all nine of his field goal attempts, including a couple of highlight dunks and three 3-pointers. Jarrey Foster added 18 points on 9-of-11 shooting with a couple of slams of his own.

All five starters scored in double figures for the Mustangs (26-4, 16-1), who can clinch the league title outright with a win when they finish the regular season at home Saturday against Memphis.

Sterling Brown had 19 points while Shake Milton had 15 points and 10 assists for SMU. Ben Moore added 12 points.

Corey Henderson had 17 points for Tulsa (14-15, 8-9) and Junior Etou had 13.

No. 18 CINCINNATI 65, HOUSTON 47

CINCINNATI (AP) - Gary Clark had 14 points and seven rebounds in Cincinnati's balanced attack, and the Bearcats rolled to their 26th straight win at home.

Cincinnati (26-4, 15-2 American Athletic) wrapped up its fourth undefeated season at Fifth Third Arena, which opened in 1989. The Bearcats' home winning streak is the second-longest at the arena. They won 41 in a row from 1997-2000.

Houston (20-9, 11-6) came in with the second-best offense in the league but came away with its lowest point total of the season. Rob Gray led with 17 points.

Damyean Dotson made a 3-pointer in the closing minutes, giving him the Houston record of 29 consecutive games with a 3. He moved one ahead of Robert McKiver's mark from 2007-08.

The Bearcats took control by closing the first half with a 20-4 run for a 37-20 lead, Houston's lowest-scoring half of the season.

---

IOWA 59, No. 22 WISCONSIN 57

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Jordan Bohannon hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 9 seconds left, and Iowa closed the game with a 7-0 run.

After Ethan Happ missed two free throws that could have sealed the win for Wisconsin, Iowa's Peter Jok missed a jumper in the lane.

But Cordell Pemsl corralled the offensive rebound and Bohannon hit the 3 from the left wing, stunning the crowd at the Kohl Center after Wisconsin led by nine with 4:15 left.

The Hawkeyes (17-13, 9-8 Big Ten) have won two straight road games as they try to improve their postseason resume.

The Badgers (22-8, 11-6) lost their third straight game, going scoreless for the final 3:12.

Bohannon finished with 11 points.

Bronson Koenig led the Badgers with 19 points.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

— Atlanta Hawks are retiring Pete Maravich’s #44 tonight. He was great fun to watch.

— Red Sox P David Price has elbow issues, will go see Dr Andrews in Alabama.

— If the San Francisco 49ers had a game next week, they wouldn’t have a QB to play in it; they have zero QB’s under contract right now.

— Detroit Pistons were 3-17 on the foul line Wednesday. These are professionals. Oy.

— A St Louis Cardinal minor leaguer was actually walking to camp every day; pitcher Adam Wainwright noticed, and rented the young man a car for the entire spring. Good for him.

— Cal Bears under Cuonzo Martin have had good records, but faded late all three seasons:
2015: Lost seven of last nine games.
2016: Lost three of last five games.
2017: Have now lost four of last five games.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a solid night of basketball……..

13) Weird afternoon in the Big South Conference:
Campbell 81, NC-Asheville 79— 7th-seeded Camels pull a big upset in Big South. Chris Clemons scored 51 of Campbell’s 81 points in this game. Campbell lost both regular-season games with Asheville, scoring 56, 53 points as a team.

Radford 56, Liberty 52— #6-seed beats the #3-seed in an awful game where neither team could throw the ball in the ocean.

This means either the #6 or #7 seed will be playing in the championship game on Saturday.

12) MAAC tournament: Monmouth is the best team in this league, but if they win Saturday and host Siena beats Fairfield, then the Hawks get a true road game in the semifinals in beautiful downtown Albany. Doesn’t seem fair.

11) Missouri Valley tournament: Anything other than an Illinois State-Wichita State final would be a huge surprise. I’m not even sure who the third-best team is, but they aren’t very good.

10) Ohio Valley tournament: Murray State 75, Morehead State 69— Racers won in double OT the night before, but they were the strong team down the stretch here. Down 61-51, Murray hit three straight 3’s to get back in the game, and Morehead did nothing in last 5:00.

Surprising result; I thought Morehead would win this game.

9) Patriot League tournament: Top four seeds advanced to Sunday’s semifinals, so we’ll have Navy-Bucknell and Lehigh-Boston U. Survivor will be a 16-seed or a play-in team.

8) Cal-Davis 68, Hawai’i 59— Our friends the Aggies finish unbeaten at home; they go to Irvine on Saturday and play the Anteaters for the Big West regular season title.

7) Bulls 94, Warriors 87— How long does it take Golden State to adjust to not having Durant in their lineup? His injury makes the NBA a whole lot more interesting.

6) Sacramento State 57, North Dakota 53— Hornets win as 10.5-point underdogs; they’re 12-3 vs spread in last 15 games. Tough loss for North Dakota, which falls out of a tie for first place in the Big Sky Conference.

5) Colorado 91, Stanford 72- Buffaloes won seven of last ten games after starting 0-7 in Pac-12 games. Bill Walton was fired up on his last regular season ESPN broadcast of the year; at one point, he was talking about Copernicus and buffaloes stampeding. He is unique.

4) Minnesota 88, Nebraska 73— Golden Gophers won their last eight games; would be funny if the NCAA committee put Minnesota/Louisville in the same bracket. Well, funny for me, maybe not for the Pitino family.

3) Old Dominion 62, Texas-El Paso 61— Kid on UTEP tipped ball in right at the buzzer for the Miner win, but refs said it came too late. Replay I saw showed it should’ve been good.

Why are these teams in the same league? ODU is in Virginia, El Paso is in west Texas, by the Mexican border. Monarchs have won five games in a row. Miners lost but covered, their 12th straight game beating the point spread.

2) Iowa 59, Wisconsin 57— Hawkeyes scored last seven points of game as Wisconsin lost for 5th time in last six games- they look like a prime candidate for a quick exit in the NCAA’s.

1— SMU 93, Tulsa 70— Mustangs are really good. At 26-4, not many people talk about them.

HORIZON

Bubble...Valparaiso.

Conference Power Rating: 19th.
Tournament Date-Site-Venue: March 3-7 at Joe Louis Arena, Detroit, MI.

Last year...NCAA-1 (Green Bay); NIT-1 (Valparaiso-Runner-up); VEGAS 16/8 (Oakland-Runner-up).

Notes...After last Friday's loss to Oakland, and surrendering top seed at "the Joe" to the Golden Grizzlies, Valpo might have already played itself off of the edge of the bubble. After years of being conducted at campus sites, the Horizon Tournament begins a second year in Detroit at the soon-to-close Joe Louis Arena, home of the NHL Red Wings. Next year, the Tourney is slated to move into the new Detroit Events Center, currently under construction.

Friday's Tip Sheet
March 2, 2017

**Harvard at Princeton**

-- Princeton (19-6 straight up, 10-9 against the spread) hasn’t tasted defeat since losing 96-90 at Monmouth on Dec. 20. The Tigers have won 15 games in a row since then, including all 12 Ivy League contests. They can become the first team to qualify for the NCAA Tournament with a win over Harvard on Friday night. Even with a loss, Mitch Henderson’s team can clinch the Ivy’s automatic bid by beating Dartmouth on Saturday.

-- Princeton is off a 75-60 win at Cornell as a 12.5-point road favorite. The spread cover marked the fourth straight for the Tigers, who were led by Devin Cannady’s 26 points on 6-of-10 shooting from 3-point range. Myles Stephens added 17 points and Steven Cook finished with 14.

-- One offshore book opened Princeton as a 7.5-point home favorite. The Tigers are 6-2 ATS as single-digit favorites this season.

-- Cannady is scoring at a team-high 13.9 points-per-game clip. The sophomore is hitting 41.9 percent of his launches from downtown and 92.2 percent at the free-throw line. Cook (13.2 PPG) averages 5.3 rebounds per game and is making 44.3 percent of his 3-balls. Stephens (11.6 PPG) is another threat from beyond the arc, draining 37.3 percent of his 3’s. Meanwhile, senior forward Spencer Weisz is averaging 10.7 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, in addition to dishing out a team-high 100 assists compared to 43 turnovers.

-- Princeton is No. 56 in the RPI Rankings and No. 62 at KenPom.com. The Tigers have only one RPI Top-100 win, winning 72-70 at Bucknell. The Tigers lost at VCU, at Monmouth, at BYU and at Lehigh, in addition to a home loss to Saint Joseph’s and a neutral-court setback vs. California.

-- Princeton has won eight of its nine home games, compiling a 4-3 spread record.

-- Princeton is 10th in the nation in scoring defense, limiting opponents to just 61.7 points per game.

-- Harvard (18-7 SU, 13-4-2 ATS) has won seven of 10 road assignments, producing a stellar 5-1 spread record.

-- Tommy Amaker’s team has won six consecutive games and is 7-1 ATS in its last eight contests. Harvard is off of Saturday’s 77-58 win over Brown as an 11.5-point home ‘chalk.’ Senior point guard Siyani Chambers was the catalyst, scoring 19 points and dishing out five assists. Chambers buried 7-of-9 shots from the field, including all three of his attempts from long distance. Seth Towns added 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. In only 13 minutes of action due to foul trouble, Zena Edosomwan nonetheless contributed eight points, 11 boards and one blocked shot.

-- Harvard owns a 3-1-1 spread record with two outright victories – at Yale and at Houston – in five games as an underdog this year.

-- Chambers is averaging 10.1 points, 6.0 assists and 1.3 steals per game. After missing all of last season with a torn ACL, the veteran PG has a 143/45 assists-to-turnovers ratio. Bryce Aiken leads the Crimson in scoring with a 14.3 PPG average. Towns (12.0 PPG) is also scoring in double figures.

-- When these teams met at Lavietes Pavilion in Boston on Feb. 4, Princeton captured a 57-56 win as a three-point road favorite. Cook paced the Tigers with 19 points, nine rebounds, five steals, three assists and one block. Stephens added 15 points, while Weisz contributed 13 points and eight boards. In the losing effort, Chambers had a team-best 17 points, four rebounds and three assists. The 113 combined points went ‘under’ the 136-point tally.

-- Harvard ranks 24th in the country in defending the 3-point line (31.2%), 33rd in scoring defense (64.8 PPG) and 32nd in field-goal percentage defense (40.5%).

-- If Princeton loses to Harvard and Dartmouth and Harvard wins Saturday at Penn, the Ivy League rivals would play each other for a third time for the right to go to the NCAA Tournament.

-- The ‘under’ is 13-6 overall for the Tigers, 5-2 in their home games. They saw a nine-game run of ‘unders’ end in last Saturday’s 75-60 win at Cornell that saw the 135 combined points slip ‘over’ the 134.5-point total by one-half point.

-- The ‘over’ is 11-8-2 overall for the Crimson, 4-4 in its road contests. The ‘over’ had cashed in five straight until the ‘under’ appeared in Saturday’s win over Brown.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU.

**Iowa State at West Virginia**

-- One offshore shop opened West Virginia (23-7 SU, 12-12-1 ATS) as a 7.5-point home favorite for this Big 12 clash. These teams are jockeying for position in the Big 12 Tournament. Iowa State is alone in second place with a 12-5 league record, but WVU and Baylor are both one game back with 11-6 marks in Big 12 play.

-- Bob Huggins’s team has won 15 of its 17 home games, going 5-6 ATS. WVU owns a perfect 3-0 spread record in its three games as a single-digit home ‘chalk.’

-- West Virginia saw its three-game winning streak snapped in Monday’s 71-62 loss at Baylor as a 1.5-point road underdog. Jevon Carter had 18 points, nine rebounds and three steals in the losing effort. Tarik Phillip and Elijah Macon were also in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. The Bears beat WVU up on the boards with a 36-23 rebounding advantage.

-- When these schools met in Ames on Jan. 31, West Va. collected an 85-72 win as a two-point road favorite. It was WVU’s third consecutive win over ISU both SU and ATS. Nathan Adrian led the way with 23 points and 11 rebounds, while Phillip scored 15 points. Matt Thomas finished with 19 points and seven rebounds for the Cyclones, who got 11 points, 10 assists, five rebounds and three steals out of Deonte Burton.

-- WVU is ranked eighth in the Associated Press’s poll but is just No. 24 in the RPI. The Mountaineers are 3-2 against RPI Top-25 foes, 5-3 versus the Top 50 and 11-5 against the Top 100. They own road wins at Virginia, at Oklahoma State, at Iowa State and at TCU. Also, WVU has home scalps of Baylor, Kansas, TCU, Texas A&M, Kansas State and Texas Tech.

-- Carter leads WVU in scoring (12.9 PPG), assists (4.0 APG) and steals (2.8 SPG).

-- Iowa State (20-9 SU, 15-11 ATS) is No. 24 in the AP and No. 31 in the RPI. Steve Prohm’s squad is 2-5 against the Top 25, 5-6 versus the Top 50 and 10-8 against the Top 100. The Cyclones have a neutral-court win over Miami, in addition to victories at Oklahoma State, at Kansas, at Kansas State and at Texas Tech. They’ve also won at home vs. Baylor, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Kansas State and TCU.

-- Iowa State will bring a six-game winning streak into Morgantown. The Cyclones covered the spread in the first five wins, only to come up just short for our purposes in Tuesday’s thrilling 86-83 win over red-hot Oklahoma St. as 3.5-point home ‘chalk.’ They were ahead of the number with a five-point advantage until Jawun Evans drained a deep trey with 2.0 seconds left. Donovan Jackson was fouled with 1.1 left but after making his first free throw, he missed the second that would’ve provided the spread cover. In his last game at Hilton Coliseum, senior shooting guard Matt Thomas tied his career-high with a 25-point effort on his Senior Night. Thomas splashed the nets at a 7-for-11 clip from 3-point range and also dished out five assists compared to only one turnover. Burton contributed 20 points, five boards and three steals, while Monte Morris nearly went for a triple-double with 12 points, 11 assists, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.

-- Iowa State is 5-5 SU and 6-4 ATS in 10 road assignments. The Cyclones have been downright nasty as road underdogs this season, going 6-1 with five outright victories in seven such spots.

-- Morris has an insane 68/6 assists-to-turnovers ratio in Iowa State’s last 10 games. He leads ISU in scoring (16.1 PPG) and assists (6.2 APG), while Burton (14.3 PPG) paced the Cyclones in rebounding (6.4 RPG), steals (1.9 SPG) and blocks (1.4 BPG). Thomas (12.0 PPG) is burying 44.1 percent of his 3’s and 86.4 percent of his FTs. Meanwhile, Naz Long averages 15.8 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.2 steals per game.

-- After hitting in five consecutive games, the ‘over’ is 14-12 overall for the Cyclones, 7-3 in their road outings.

-- The ‘over’ is 14-10-1 overall for the Mountaineers, 8-4 in their home games. However, they’ve seen the ‘under’ cash in three straight games.

-- ESPN2 will have the broadcast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Louisville was 4-0 ATS as an ACC road favorite until losing Wednesday at Wake Forest by an 88-81 count as a 4.5-point road ‘chalk.’

-- LSU ended a school-record 15-game losing streak Wednesday night by beating Tennessee 92-82 as a six-point home underdog. The Tigers were led by Brandon Sampson’s 24 points. The Volunteers have limped down the stretch, losing five of their last six games.

-- After scoring only three points in a pair of games since spraining his ankle at Mississippi State two Saturdays ago, Canyon Barry scored a team-high 14 points Wednesday to lead Florida to a 78-65 win over Arkansas as a 10.5-point home favorite. The Gators have won 10 of their last 11 games while posting an 8-3 spread record. As of Thursday afternoon, they were No. 3 in the RPI and No. 5 at KenPom.com.

-- Since Yante Maten went down with a sprained knee two minutes into the Kentucky game, Georgia senior J.J. Frazier has responded by scoring 36, 28, 29 and 31 points in a four-game stretch. The 36-point effort came in the narrow home loss to Kentucky. The Bulldogs have won three in a row since then, including Wednesday’s 79-78 home win over Auburn, to keep their at-large hopes alive. The hopes of getting Maten back for next week’s SEC Tournament in Nashville appear to be slim, however. Like Kevin Durant, Maten has a ‘Grade 2’ MCL sprain. UGA has won five of its last six, has five road wins over RPI Top-100 foes and took Kentucky and Florida to overtime in Lexington and Gainesville, respectively. However, Mark Fox’s team has just one win over an RPI Top-50 opponent, and that came at home vs. Vanderbilt. UGA is No. 50 in the RPI. The Dawgs, who lost by two at South Carolina, close the regular season Saturday vs. the Gamecocks at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens.

-- Boise State has failed to cover the number in seven straight games. The Broncos close the regular season Saturday at Air Force.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

— Jacksonville State 65, Belmont 59— Bruins went 15-1 in OVC, lost first tourney game. Most famous JSU alum? Maybe Dieter Brock, longtime CFL QB who led Rams to playoffs in 1985.

— Princeton 73, Harvard 69— Tigers are 13-0 in Ivy; Harvard was 13-28 on arc, still lost.

— Campbell 66, Redford 50— 17-16 Camels (#7 seed) are in the Big South finals.

— Western Michigan 88, Central Michigan 80— Broncos head to MAC tourney on an 8-game win streak.

— Akron 66, Kent State 56— Surprisingly intense rivalry game in the MAC.

— Noah Syndergaard’s salary this year? $605,500.

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind……..

13) Former players at Georgetown are grumbling about the program’s recent struggles, but they won’t go on record with complaints, because they’re afraid of former coach John Thompson, father of current coach John Thompson III. Grown men are actually afraid of him.

JTIII got the Hoyas to the Final Four ten years ago, but they’ve only made the NCAA’s one of last four years and since ’07, Georgetown is 3-7 in NCAA tournament games, losing to mid-majors like Davidson-Ohio U-VCU-Florida Gulf Coast.

Apparently lot of the program’s biggest donors are former Hoya players, so if you alienate the elder Thompson, you risk losing those donors, who are loyal to him, meaning JTII probably gets to keep his job as long as he wants it. Must be fun to be the athletic director.

12) Longtime LA Kings radio announcer Bob Miller is retiring after 44 years with the team; he is beloved by hockey fans in southern California.

11) Best wishes to Minnesota Vikings’ coach Mike Zimmer, who is having his 5th/6th procedures on his damaged eye that caused him to miss a game last season.

10) Jake Elmore is a baseball journeyman; he’s appeared in 197 games over the last five years, but here’s the thing— he’s been on a different team all five years.

2012— 73 plate appearances in 30 games for Arizona
2013— 136 PA in 52 games for Houston
2014— 12 PA in five games for Cincinnati
2015— 158 PA in 51 games for Tampa Bay
2016— 99 PA in 59 games for Milwaukee

He’s played all nine positions, even pitching an inning for the Astros. This spring, he is in camp with the Blue Jays.

9) I’ve never seen numbers on this, but I’m thinking the hardest free throw for any player is the first one they take in a game, especially for visiting players.

First time you shoot with a different background, it can be tough. Someone with a fancy computer should do a study on this, but if I was coaching and we needed to foul late in the game, I’d go after a guy who hadn’t been at the line yet in that game.

8) Valparaiso tied for first place in Horizon League, but Alec Peters, their best player, has a stress reaction in his leg and is done for the season, which is a huge blow to their chances to win the conference tournament.

UCLA’s TJ Leaf sprained his ankle Wednesday night; he didn’t return to the game- they haven’t said how bad it is, but Bruins have very little depth, so if he is out for a few weeks, it is bad news.

7) Boise State’s Nick Duncan is from Australia; apparently he had never seen snow before coming to Boise, so when it snowed his freshman year and it snows a lot in Idaho, he didn’t know what to do. Wish I had never seen snow.

6) This is probably a coincidence, but DeMarcus Cousins has been suspended for two games this year because he has 18 technical fouls— his teams won both of those games easily.

5) Odd Stat of the Day: Chicago Bulls have won their last 18 home games that were telecast on TNT.

4) Canada’s team in the World Baseball Classic has Freddie Freeman, Joey Votto and Justin Morneau, so 1B/DH are spoken for, just not sure what Morneau is going to do.

3) Basketball teams are Cincinnati, Houston will be displaced next season while their arenas get facelifts. Think I heard one facelift costs $60M, the other $85M.

Cincinnati will play home games seven miles away next year, in Northern Kentucky’s arena just over the bridge from Cincy.

2) In a Nationals-Astros game Thursday, umps called a ball a home run that replay showed never left the park- it hit the top of the fence in two different places but stayed in the ballpark.

It amazes me that there are people who would prefer to have no replay and instead waste time having managers arguing with umpires, which accomplishes nothing. Replay corrects a lot of missed calls and while not a perfect system, is good for the game.

1— People bet on exhibition baseball and I’ve often wondered why, but thought of a solid angle today that could actually work. I’m probably late with this, but…….

Teams play their best lineups when they’re televising back to their home markets; for instance, as I type this, the Mets are on SNY and they’re playing their top guys against a rag-tag group of Astros. Syndergaard pitched a couple innings; they put their best foot forward today, as much as they would in a game on March 3rd. No guarantees, but it gives them an edge.
