SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) Eric Mika had 29 points and 11 rebounds to help BYU upset No. 1 Gonzaga 79-71 on Saturday night, ending the Bulldogs' bid to go undefeated in the final game of the regular season.

Nigel Williams-Goss scored 19 points for Gonzaga (29-1, 17-1 West Coast Conference), which was seeking to become the first team since Kentucky in 2014-15 to finish the regular season without a loss.

Mika's basket with a minute left gave BYU (21-10, 12-6) a 73-71 lead.

Gonzaga lost the ball on its next two possessions, and Corbin Kaufusi had a putback and Mika hit two free throws to put it out of reach.

The last team to finish the entire season undefeated was Indiana in 1975-76.

---

No. 5 UCLA 77, No. 4 ARIZONA 72

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Thomas Welsh scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half and No. 5 UCLA dominated the offensive boards to beat Arizona in a Pac-12 showdown.

The Bruins (26-3, 13-3) snapped Arizona's 21-game home court winning streak and dropped the Wildcats (26-4, 15-2) into a tie with Oregon for first place in the Pac-12 heading into the final week of the regular season. The Ducks hold the tiebreaker by beating Arizona in the teams' only meeting.

UCLA, avenging a 96-85 home loss to Arizona on Jan. 21, trailed 53-49 at the half but took control with a 19-4 second-half run.

Allonzo Trier scored a career-high 28 for the Wildcats.

UCLA had 19 second-chance points to Arizona's four.

---

No. 2 VILLANOVA 79, No. 23 CREIGHTON 63

VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) - Eric Paschall scored a season-high 19 points and Josh Hart added 16 to help Villanova wrap up its fourth straight Big East regular-season title.

Kris Jenkins scored 15 points and Mikal Bridges had 11 for the defending national champion Wildcats (27-3, 14-3).

Marcus Foster scored 25 points and Khyri Thomas had 17 for Creighton (22-7, 9-7). It has lost six of 10 after an 18-1 start.

---

No. 3 KANSAS 77, TEXAS 67.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Josh Jackson scored 18 points and Frank Mason III added 16 to help Kansas beat Texas and win its 13th consecutive Big 12 regular-season championship outright.

Devonte Graham and Dwight Coleby added points 12 apiece for the Jayhawks (26-3, 14-2 Big 12).

Jarrett Allen led Texas (10-19, 4-12) with 20 points, and Andrew Jones added 18.

---

No. 5 OREGON 75, STANFORD 73

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Jordan Bell scored on a putback with 14 seconds left to give Oregon a rare Bay Area sweep.

Bell's game-winner followed Dillon Brooks' last-second, tiebreaking 3-pointer three nights earlier at California to give Oregon (26-4, 15-2 Pac-12) its second sweep of its conference Bay Area rivals since 1976.

Tyler Dorsey scored 15 points to lead Oregon, while Brooks added 14.

Reid Travis had 27 points and 14 rebounds to lead the way for the Cardinal (14-14, 6-10).

---

No. 8 NORTH CAROLINA 85, PITTSBURGH 67

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Justin Jackson scored 23 points, Joel Berry added 19 and North Carolina continued its march to the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season title.

The Tar Heels (25-5, 13-3) have won four straight following a loss to arch rival Duke two weeks ago. North Carolina can clinch its second straight ACC regular season crown and 31st overall with a win at No. 18 Virginia on Monday.

Michael Young and fellow senior Jamel Artis finished with 17 points each for the Panthers (15-14, 4-12).

---

IOWA ST. 72, No. 9 BAYLOR 69

AMES, Iowa (AP) - Deonte Burton scored 22 points, including a crucial 3 with 1:17 left, and Iowa State won its fifth straight.

Monte Morris had 17 points with seven assists for the Cyclones (19-9, 11-5 Big 12), who have their longest winning streak in league play since a seven-game stretch in 2005.

Johnathan Motley had 27 points and 11 rebounds for Baylor (23-6, 10-6).

---

MIAMI 55, No. 10 DUKE 50

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) - Bruce Brown scored 25 points, and Miami held Duke a staggering 32 points below its season average.

Brown shot 11 for 18 and had four assists, while his teammates shot just 11 for 40 with four assists combined. Yet it was enough for the Hurricanes (20-8, 10-6 Atlantic Coast Conference), who dominated inside and outscored Duke 40-20 in the paint.

Frank Jackson and Luke Kennard each scored 16 points for Duke (22-7, 10-6), which lost its second straight to an unranked opponent.

---

No. 11 KENTUCKY 76, No. 13 FLORIDA 66

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Malik Monk scored 30 of his 33 points in the second half and Bam Adebayo added 18 points with 15 rebounds as Kentucky took over the Southeastern Conference lead.

While another week remains in SEC play for both teams, the Wildcats (24-5, 14-2) took an important step by twice rallying from eight points down to win the pivotal matchup. And they can thank Monk for making it happen as he scored 14 points during an 18-10 run that tied the game at 55 with 9:54 remaining.

KeVaughn Allen had 24 points and Justin Leon added 13 for Florida (23-6, 13-3), which had won nine straight.

---

No. 12 WEST VIRGINIA 61, TCU 60

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) - Daxter Miles Jr. made a free throw with 4.8 seconds left for West Virginia.

Miles went to the free throw line after a questionable foul against Jaylen Fisher, who never left the ground and appeared to make only slight incidental contact with the Miles.

TCU (17-12, 6-10 Big 12), which had tied the game on Alex Robinson's free throw with 9.1 seconds left, had one more chance but Desmond Bane's 3-pointer at the buzzer was well short.

Jevon Carter had 15 points for West Virginia (23-6, 11-5), while Nathan Adrian added 13.

Fisher had 18 points to lead TCU, which lost its fifth straight.

---

MICHIGAN 82, No. 14 PURDUE 70

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Moe Wagner scored 22 of his 24 points in the first half for Michigan.

Derrick Walton added 17 points and 11 rebounds and the Wolverines (19-10, 9-7 Big Ten), who have won five of six.

Caleb Swanigan scored 18 points for the Boilermakers (23-6, 12-4), who had their six-game winning streak snapped.

---

No. 17 SMU 69, UCONN 61

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Shake Milton had 20 points and seven rebounds to lead SMU.

The Mustangs (25-4, 15-1 American Athletic Conference) won their 11th straight. Semi Ojeleye added 16 points.

The Huskies (14-14, 9-7), who have dropped two straight after a four-game winning streak, were led by Kentan Facey's 15 points.

---

No. 18 VIRGINIA 70, N.C. STATE 55

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Freshman Kyle Guy scored 19 points to help Virginia end a four-game losing streak.

Devon Hall added 18 points for the Cavaliers (19-9, 9-7 Atlantic Coast Conference), who shot 49 percent and made 11 of 16 3-pointers.

Freshman Dennis Smith Jr. scored 13 points for the Wolfpack (15-15, 4-13).

---

No. 19 FLORIDA ST. 76, CLEMSON 74

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) - Xavier Rathan-Mayes scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, including the go-ahead basket with 1:22 left, to lift Florida State.

Jonathan Isaac of Florida State (23-6, 11-5) blocked Shelton Mitchell's drive with 11 seconds left and, after Trent Forrest made a free throw for the Seminoles, Marcquise Reed came up short on a mid-range jumper with 5 seconds to go.

Jaron Blossomgame had 24 points for Clemson (14-14, 4-12).

---

No. 20 SAINT MARY'S 70, SANTA CLARA 56

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) - Jock Landale scored 17 points and Saint Mary's beat Santa Clara in the West Coast Conference regular-season finale for both teams.

Emmett Naar and Calvin Hermanson scored 13 points apiece for the Gaels (26-3, 15-3). Jared Brownridge and Matt Hauser scored 15 points apiece for Santa Clara (16-15, 10-8).

---

IOWA 83, No. 24 MARYLAND 69

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - Freshman Jordan Bohannon scored a career-high 24 points, hitting 8 of 10 3-pointers, to help Iowa breeze past fading Maryland.

Tyler Cook had 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawkeyes (16-13, 8-8 Big Ten). Kevin Huerter scored 13 points for Maryland (22-7, 10-6). Since opening 20-2, the Terrapins have lost five of seven and three in a row.

---

No. 25 WICHITA ST. 86, MISSOURI ST. 67

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Landry Shamet scored a career-best 23 points as Wichita State clinched at least a share of the Missouri Valley Conference title for a fourth straight season.

The title is the fifth in six seasons for the Shockers (27-4, 17-1), who have won 12 straight games and appear well on their way to a sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

Dequon Miller had 19 points for the Bears (16-15, 7-11).

— Cubs drew 14,929 fans for their first spring training game in Arizona.

— Eric Sogard is on the Brewers now; liked him when he played for the A’s. He wears glasses.

— In six years that Carmelo Anthony has been on the Knicks, they are 7-14 in playoff games. Denver Nuggets are 6-12 in playoff games since Anthony let Denver.

— Orioles OF Michael Bourn broke a finger, is out four weeks; he got hurt catching a football.

— South Florida’s basketball team left two of its better players behind at the Houston airport the other night. Kids were sleeping in the terminal. Been a rough year for the Bulls.

********************************

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a basketball Saturday…….

13) Florida State 76, Clemson 74— Seminoles won first meeting this year, 109-61; Clemson is a huge disappointment- they’re 1-9 in ACC games that were decided by 6 or less points.

12) Kentucky 76, Florida 66— De’Aaron Fox didn’t play for the Wildcats but they won anyway, taking a one-game lead in the SEC. Malik Monk scored 30 points in the second half; Kentucky had a 22-4 edge on the foul line in this game.

11) Iowa 83, Maryland 69— Young Terrapins have now lost five of their last seven games after a 20-2 start; they’re going to be a fashionable pick to be upset in the first round of the NCAA’s.

10) UCLA 77, Arizona 72— Road team won both regular season meetings; would be fun if there was a rubber match in Las Vegas in two weeks, at the Pac-12 tourney.

9) Providence 73, Marquette 69— Friars won their last four games to even their Big East mark at 8-8; they swept Marquette this year, with two wins by total of five points.

On Selection Sunday, Providence’s #277 non-conference strength of schedule could haunt them.

8) Miami 55, Duke 50— Grayson Allen (ankle) didn’t play. Blue Devils went 5-21 on the arc, with Luke Kennard going 6-20 from the floor.

Duke freshman Harry Giles played 19:00 and scored two points; mock drafts have him going around 10-12th in the NBA Draft. if he gets picked that high, someone is going to get fired; the kid has had two major knee operations and hasn’t played very well this year. Maybe he turns out to be a great NBA player someday, but what visual evidence is there right now to point that way?

7) Upsets of the Day:
— BYU (+20) 79, Gonzaga 71
— The Citadel (+13) 102, Samford 96
— Mercer (+8.5) 64, Chattanooga 54
— Iowa (+8) 83, Maryland 69

6) Oregon 75, Stanford 73— Ducks swept Bay Area trip, but wins were by a total of five points- they didn’t look that great in either game. If I’m looking for potential Final Four teams, I’m not looking for teams getting taken to the wire by Stanford.

5) Western Michigan 80, Ball State 55— Surging Broncos have won their last six games after they started season 7-15. WMU point guard Wilder is a very good player.

4) Oklahoma 81, Kansas State 51— Lon Kruger gets career win #600; he might be the most underrated coach in the country.

3) Belmont 68, Tennessee State 63— Belmont finishes 15-1 in the OVC, will have ton of pressure on them to win the conference tournament next weekend. Bruins are 66-14 in OVC games; they won the OVC tournament twice in their first four years in the league.

2) BYU 79, Gonzaga 71— Sports are fun; unusual things happen. This is third year in a row that BYU has won in Spokane. Joe Lunardi’s computer had to be working overtime after this result. As for the Zags, not a great time to have your confidence shaken.

1— Indiana 63, Northwestern 62— Hoosiers ended first half on a 22-0 run that ended with a 70-footer banked in at the buzzer. Game ended with Indiana’s Bryant’s scoring 3-point play with 0:02 left for the win. If you’re a Northwestern fan, it is time to get queasy.

Preview: Orange (17-12) at Cardinals (22-6)
Date: February 26, 2017 2:00 PM EDT

LOUISVILLE -- If Sunday's Louisville-Syracuse game is anything like the last one, fans are in for a thriller.

The No. 7 Cardinals (22-6, 10-5 ACC) needed overtime to beat the Orange (17-12, 9-7) less than two weeks ago at the Carrier Dome. That game saw Louisville score 10 straight points in overtime after it struggled to put the game away in the final minutes of regulation.

"We actually learned a lot about ourselves in that last game," said Louisville's leading scorer Donovan Mitchell, whose game-high 16 points included some crucial shots in the second half.

Syracuse also learned a lot about itself since the Louisville game. The Orange just picked up their biggest victory of the season Wednesday, a dramatic win over No. 10 Duke on a last-second, bank-shot 3-pointer by John Gillon.

"We've got three tough games in a row, and we're coming down to the wire here," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "(The Duke game) was a great win, but now we have an even-tougher game on Sunday."

Conversely, Louisville is coming off a disappointing second half during a loss at North Carolina on Wednesday night.

Syracuse figures to be riding high after the win over Duke. Meanwhile, Louisville went back to the drawing board after struggling from the foul line at North Carolina, an issue that essentially helped Syracuse get back into the game with the Cardinals at the Carrier Dome.

"We probably spend more time working on that than most other programs," Louisville coach Rick Pitino said.

Pitino was clearly disgusted by Louisville's recent string of poor foul-shooting games: "We actually have to take practice time away to work on foul shots."

"The good thing about free throws is that it is something you can fix," Mitchell said. "Your body -- Anas (Mahmoud) and Ray (Spalding) can work for months on gaining weight to get results, but with free throws, you go into the gym, work on it for a week straight and at the end of that week you are a better free throw shooter."

Meanwhile, Gillon hasn't missed a free throw in nearly a month, making his last 43.

"It's been such a weapon for us this season," Syracuse assistant coach Gerry McNamara said. "With the three guys (Gillon, Andrew White, Tyler Lydon) taking the majority of our free throws, we're right at the top of the conference."

As with most Louisville-Syracuse matchups, Sunday's game is all about defense.

"They are actually one of the easiest teams to prepare for because you know exactly what they are going to do," Pitino said. "... But knowing what to do and doing it are two different things. ... Their 2-3 zone, they are very active in it. They have a bunch of guys who are really long -- Lydon, (Tarean) Thompson, White -- that makes it difficult."

And for Louisville, the Cardinals are one of the best 3-point defensive teams in the nation. Louisville held Syracuse to only 23.5 percent shooting from beyond arc Feb. 13.

On offense, Syracuse is led by White's 17.5 points per game. But it was Lydon who drew the most praise from Louisville players and coaches.

"He has a great post-up game and then he can also shoot it from nearly halfcourt. He's such a matchup problem," Mitchell said. "He's also the center of that zone and he's ready to block a shot if you get near him."

As good as Lydon is, Gillon might be the key. He's only averaging 11.1 points, but the grad-transfer point guard seems to have taken over the Syracuse team.

"We seem to go as John Gillon goes," Boeheim said. "When he's good we haven't lost, and he's been good recently. He was really good (against Duke)."

The Cardinals try for their 25th consecutive victory over a team they played on the road earlier in the season. Louisville is 27-1 in such games under Pitono.

The Orange are 2-9 on the road this season while the Cardinals are 14-1 in the KFC Yum! Center.

Preview: Bearcats (25-3) at Knights (18-10)
Date: February 26, 2017 3:00 PM EDT

Cincinnati faces a big problem -- literally -- in its rematch with Central Florida.

That would be 7-foot-6 center Tacko Fall, who had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Knights in the first meeting between the teams earlier this month.

The Bearcats won that one 60-50 after scoring the first nine points of the game, but Fall got the Knights' attention.

"It was crazy," Kyle Washington, the Bearcats' 6-9 forward, who gave up nine inches in height trying to defend the sophomore from Senegal, said afterward. "He is a huge human being."

Washington, who actually matched Fall's production in scoring and on the boards, will get another shot at his taller adversary when the No. 15 Bearcats (25-3, 14-1 American Athletic Conference) and Knights (18-10, 9-7) meet Sunday in UCF's CFE Arena in Orlando, Fla.

Tipoff is 3 p.m. ET (CBS Sports Network).

The Bearcats need a win to keep pace in the league race with SMU, which improved to 15-1 in the conference and 25-4 overall with a 69-61 victory over Connecticut Saturday.

Washington will have some help in defending Fall, who is Central Florida's third-leading scorer at 11.9 points per game behind guards B.J. Taylor (16.7) and Matt Williams (15.4).

Although he didn't miss a shot in seven attempts in the first meeting, the Bearcats forced Fall into six turnovers, all in the second half.

"Well, if you don't swarm him, he is just going to dunk it," Cincy coach Mack Cronin said. "He doesn't even have to jump."

The bigger issue for the Bearcats, however, might be at the other end of the court. The Knights go into the game holding opponents to 36.3 percent field goal shooting, which was the best in the country heading into this weekend.

The Bearcats shot only 35.4 percent in the first game, going 9-of-29 from behind the 3-point arc.

"I look at their percentages and I thought we played good enough defense both field goal percentage defense and 3-point percentage defense," first-year Central Florida coach Johnny Dawkins said. "When you hold a team in the 60s that averages in the 70s, you have a chance to win."

Both the Bearcats and the Knights, who will be playing their home finale, will be going for their fourth win in a row. The Knights are coming off consecutive road wins over East Carolina 61-58 and Temple 71-69.

The Bearcats beat Memphis 87-74 at home in the last outing but had to hang on in the second half after leading 51-32 at intermission. The Tigers were within six points with just over five minutes left before the Bearcats closed on a 12-5 spurt.

"This time of year you're just trying to continue to win and get to the next game," Cronin said. "We learn our lessons. We've got to obviously play a better defensive game."

Preview: Bulldogs (22-6) at Musketeers (18-10)
Date: February 26, 2017 3:30 PM EDT

CINCINNATI -- It's a tale of two teams headed in opposite directions with No. 22 Butler visiting Xavier on Sunday at Cintas Center.

The Bulldogs (22-6, 11-5 in the Big East) have won three straight games and are coming off a huge road win at No. 2 Villanova, winning 74-66 behind 22 points from Kelan Martin.

Butler has beaten the defending NCAA champions twice this season.

Xavier (18-10, 8-7), meanwhile, has lost four straight. The Musketeers began the season ranked in the top 10 but since have dismissed senior guard Myles Davis, lost dynamic sophomore point guard Edmond Sumner to a season-ending knee injury, and played without leading scorer Trevon Bluiett for three games due to an ankle injury.

Xavier appears safe in terms of its NCAA Tournament status, but a win on Sunday would help bolster that resume.

"We can't worry about ramifications and implications," Xavier head coach Chris Mack said. "We have to worry about a really good Butler team. All that other stuff is wasted worry."

Bluiett returned to the starting lineup Wednesday and scored 14 points in a 71-64 loss at Seton Hall. He has posted a team-high 13 games with 20 points or more.

Martin has been among the catalysts for Butler's recent surge, averaging 18.3 points and 8.3 rebounds in that stretch. In three games before the winning streak, Martin averaged 6.7 points and 4.7 rebounds.

While the Musketeers have been trying to make do with limited numbers, depth has been key for Butler, whose bench has outscored opponents in 14 of 16 Big East games.

Freshman guard Kamar Baldwin scored 15 points in the win over Villanova. He scored all 21 of his points in the second half during the win over Xavier at Hinkle Fieldhouse in January.

"He's got a real air of confidence that I love in a player," Bulldogs head coach Chris Holtmann told the Indianapolis Star. "We need to continue to foster that."

Xavier leads the all-time series 37-19 and had won four straight before losing at Butler last month. The Musketeers have won four of five against the Bulldogs and 16 of the last 21. Xavier is 5-1 versus Butler at Cintas Center.

Sunday's game takes on added importance for Xavier.

"It's a challenging time for our team," Mack said. "Having Trey (Bluiett) back helps everyone. Hopefully, we can stay healthy down the stretch and have a strong finish."

Likewise, for Butler, which is looking to match its school record of 12 Big East wins. A win at Xavier also would give the Bulldogs a boost in their hopes of opening the NCAA Tournament in their hometown of Indianapolis.

"What you're really trying to do is set yourself up to play meaningful games at this time of year," Holtmann said. "That's what makes being a college basketball player fun."

The Bulldogs come into Sunday's game red-hot from the perimeter.

Butler hit 10 3-pointers in the win at Villanova, marking the seventh time they've done so this season. Not surprisingly, the Bulldogs are 7-0 in those games.

Avery Woodson is 13 of 24 from 3-point range during the winning streak and probably a focus for Xavier defenders on Sunday.

Preview: Badgers (22-6) at Spartans (17-11)
Date: February 26, 2017 4:00 PM EDT

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo must rely heavily on a quartet of freshmen with senior guard Eron Harris out for the season. The Spartans passed their first test without their third-leading scorer but now face a bigger challenge.

Following an 88-72 home victory over Nebraska on Thursday, the Spartans play at Breslin Center for the final time this season against No. 16 Wisconsin on Sunday.

Michigan State's freshmen excelled against the Cornhuskers, as forward Miles Bridges and center Nick Ward scored 20 points apiece, shooting guard Joshua Langford added a career-high 17 and point guard Cassius Winston collected eight assists.

The Spartans bounced back from a 17-point loss at Purdue on Saturday, in which Harris suffered a significant knee injury.

"I do think they responded," Izzo said of the freshmen. "I just think they have to learn how to play both ends of the court. For the last two games, we are fouling too much. We have to do a better job with that.

"Are the freshmen going to take over? I mean Nick and Miles have been fairly consistent. ... They definitely looked more aggressive; they looked more comfortable. That part of it was great."

At 17-11 overall and 9-6 in the Big Ten, Michigan State appears to be in good shape for an NCAA Tournament bid. With three regular-season games remaining, as well as the conference tournament, it still has work to do to secure a spot.

A home victory over the Badgers would certainly enhance the Spartans' resume.

"Typically, what we do here is play through our seniors," Langford said. "But with Eron being out, and with two other seniors Ben (Carter) and Gavin (Schilling) also out, we want to up our intensity even more.

"We thought we were giving 100 percent, we need to give 120 percent. Because we actually need it with Eron being out. Everyone needs to pick up the slack. I feel like everyone did a great job of that (Thursday)."

Michigan State could be catching Wisconsin at a good time. The Badgers were 21-3 after an eight-game winning streak but have lost three of the last four. They were upset 83-73 by unranked Ohio State on Thursday.

Wisconsin (22-6, 11-4) dropped a game behind first-place Purdue and could slide out of the rankings with a loss on Sunday. The Buckeyes shot 50 percent from the field against the Badgers, including a 10-for-16 success rate from beyond the arc.

"When you let them get going early and let them get some easy buckets, the hard buckets become a lot easier," senior guard Bronson Koenig told Madison.com. "They were hitting everything, even guys who aren't the best shooters were hitting shots.

"We've just got to take more pride on the defensive end. I don't think we were that bad offensively, but it doesn't really matter when we can't get a stop."

Koenig scored 27 points against Ohio State, but sophomore center Ethan Happ (14.4 points per game) was held to four and senior forward Nigel Hayes (13.4) was limited to seven.

Coach Greg Gard is more concerned about the team's defensive intensity.

"Our offense wasn't what got us in trouble (Thursday)," Gard told Madison.com. "It was our inability to stop them, especially in the first half. We dug ourselves such a big hole, and we have not been porous defensively, that disconnected or disjointed, in a long time."

Preview: Yellow Jackets (16-12) at Fighting Irish (21-7)
Date: February 26, 2017 6:30 PM EDT

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Something about Sunday's matchup between Georgia Tech and No. 21 Notre Dame strays from the repeat-opponent script.

Playing a conference colleague for the second time in a season typically carries little intrigue. Coaches know personnel, know what the other team likes to do and know what to expect.

But everything about this one at a sold-out Purcell Pavilion is different. This is not the Irish team that lost by two last month in midtown Atlanta on Josh Okogie's breakaway layup at the buzzer.

Notre Dame had the ball and had the chance to either win it in the closing seconds or go to overtime. Instead, the Irish quick-shot it, allowed the Yellow Jackets to get the rebound, race the ball up the floor and win.

That day, the Irish look featured two power forwards. Not anymore.

Following four straight league losses (Georgia Tech was No. 2 in the run), coach Mike Brey scrapped the two-big look, rattled his rotation and got his guys back to doing what they've long been able to do -- score.

Notre Dame (21-7, 10-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) has won four in a row and has its sights set on earning one of the ACC tournament's four double byes for a third-straight season.

The Irish now go with four guards grouped with do-it-all power forward Bonzie Colson. Instead of banging around near the rim, they spread teams out, open the floor and keep opponents guessing where the ball might next go.

It's going to look a lot different for Georgia Tech.

"We've changed it up," said sophomore guard Rex Pflueger, who moved into the starting lineup for good two games ago. "They're going to see a new us."

Still, the Irish are a team that remembers letting a possible league win get away last month.

"For our guys, that's the most down and upset that I've seen them," coach Mike Brey said. "They will want to play well, because that one hurt. We had the ball with a chance. Maybe we didn't deserve that but we were there."

Nobody expected Georgia Tech (16-12, 7-8) to be here with one week left in the regular season. The Yellow Jackets were picked in preseason to finish 14th in the 15-team league, and those expectations might not have been that high inside their own athletic department.

First-year coach Josh Pastner has shared the story many times over the last few months that when he was hired from Memphis, he was told by Georgia Tech school officials that there was a good chance he wouldn't win any conference games in his first year.

Maybe none even in his second year.

Instead, the Yellow Jackets are in the discussion to possibly get back to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2010.

To do that, Pastner figures his team has to win at least one more league game. Two and they're in good shape. Really good shape.

"I still believe 8-10 should get you into the NCAA tournament in this league," Pastner said. "We still have the opportunity to control our own destiny."

That destiny has to include either winning Sunday at Notre Dame, where the Yellow Jackets have never won, or later in the week at Syracuse.

Pastner's players know that score. They've won one league road game all year. They have to find a way to get to two.

"I've been very upfront with the guys," he said. "That's just kind of where I believe that everything stands."

Sunday's Tip Sheet
February 25, 2017

The last Sunday of the month dials up some great college basketball action in two of the top conferences in the country this season.

The ACC gets things started with Syracuse going on the road looking for its second-straight upset over a ranked team when it squares off against No. 7 Louisville.

Later in the afternoon, No. 16 Wisconsin will try to keep its feint Big Ten regular season title hopes alive with a win on the road against Michigan State. The third matchup pits Georgia Tech on the road against No. 21 Notre Dame in another ACC tilt.

Syracuse Orange at No. 7 Louisville Cardinals (CBS, 2:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Louisville -10, Total 143.5

Betting Matchup

The Orange are flying high following Wednesday’s last-second 78-75 victory against Duke as three-point home underdogs. The total went OVER the closing 150-point line and it has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in their last 11 games. The win snapped a three-game skid and Syracuse (17-12 SU, 12-12 ATS) is now 9-7 in ACC play.

Senior guard John Gillon led the way against the Blue Devils with game-high 26 points. The Orange shot 53.2 percent from the field in that game as opposed to their 45.8 field goal percentage on the year.

Louisville will be looking to bounce back from a 74-63 loss to North Carolina on Tuesday as a 7 ½-point road underdog that all but ended its chances to win the ACC regular season title. The Cardinals (22-6) have failed to cover in four of their last five games as part of an overall record of 17-9 ATS. The total has gone OVER in six of their last eight games.

Sophomore guard Donovan Mitchell is Louisville’s leading scorer this season with 15.8 points per game and with 21 points in the loss to the Tar Heels he has exceeded this average in each of his last eight games.

Betting Trends

-- The Orange are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 road games and the total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in 10 of their last 11 games following a SU win.

-- The Cardinals have covered in four of their five games following a SU loss and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in four of their last five games played on Sunday.

-- Head-to-head in this ACC tilt, the home team is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 meetings and the total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in six of the last seven meetings in Louisville. The Cardinals won the first meeting this season 76-72 in overtime to cover as three-point road favorites. The total went OVER the closing 140 ½-point line.

No. 16 Wisconsin Badgers at Michigan State Spartans (CBS, 4:00 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Wisconsin -1.5, Total 128.5

Betting Matchup

The Badgers (22-6 SU, 12-13 ATS) are 11-4 SU in Big Ten play, but they put a serious dent in their regular season title hopes with three SU losses in their last four games. With Thursday’s 83-73 setback against Ohio State as seven-point road favorites, they are just 4-8 ATS in their last 12 games. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in six of their last eight outings.

Sophomore forward Ethan Happ leads Wisconsin in scoring with 14.4 PPG, but he was held to just four points in Thursday’s loss. This followed a combined 42 points in his last two starts.

Michigan State improved to 9-6 SU in Big Ten play with Thursday’s 88-72 rout of Nebraska as a four-point home favorite. It is now 5-2 both SU and ATS in its last seven contests. The total went OVER the closing 132 ½-point line in that win and it has gone OVER in three of their last five games.

This was the most points the Spartans (17-11 SU, 14-13 ATS) had scored in their last 12 games and on the year they are averaging 72 PPG. Miles Bridges, Nick Ward and Joshua Langford combined for 57 of the team’s 88 points against the Cornhuskers.

Betting Trends

-- The Badgers have failed to cover in six of their last seven road games and the total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in their last five games played on Sunday.

-- The Spartans have gone 21-8 ATS in their last 29 conference games and the total has gone OVER in eight of their last 10 Sunday games.

-- The home team in this Big Ten tilt has covered in 17 of the last 25 meetings and the total has gone OVER in four of the last five games between the two.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at No. 21 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (ESPNU, 6:30 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Notre Dame -11.5, Total 136.5

Betting Matchup

Georgia Tech fell to North Carolina State 71-69 on Tuesday night as a 2 ½-point home favorite to fall to 7-8 SU in ACC play. It is 16-12 SU with a 13-10 record ATS. The Yellow Jackets have gone 4-2 ATS in their last six road games and they have covered the spread in eight of their last 10 games closing as an underdog.

They are averaging 68 PPG led by freshman guard Josh Okogie’s 15.6 point scoring average. He put up 25 points in Tuesday’s loss while going 11-for-17 from the field.

With an 81-72 victory on the road against NC State last Saturday as a five-point favorite, Notre Dame extended its current winning streak to four games while going 3-1 ATS. This followed a SU four-game slide (1-3 ATS) in which the Fighting Irish (21-7 SU, 14-7-1 ATS) lost to Georgia Tech 62-60 as seven-point favorites on the road.

Behind junior forward Bonzie Colson’s team-high 16.7 PPG, Notre Dame is averaging 79.5 points. He recently put up 27 points in a victory against Wake Forest and 33 points against Florida State to help pace this current four-game run.

Betting Trends

-- The Yellow Jackets are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a SU loss and the total has gone OVER in six of their last eight road games.

-- The Fighting Irish have covered ATS in five of their last seven games at home and the total has gone OVER in six of those contests.

-- Head-to-head in this ACC clash, the underdog has covered in seven of the last eight meetings with the other game ending as a PUSH. The total has stayed UNDER in the last four games between the two.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

— Spurs 119, Lakers 98— San Antonio is a very quiet 45-13.

— Clippers 124, Hornets 121 OT— Blake Griffin had 43 for the Clippers.

— Thunder 118, Pelicans 110— DeMarcus Cousins got his 18th technical, has to sit out the next game.

— Northern Kentucky 82, Valparaiso 78— Valpo’s best player is on crutches.

— Monmouth 79, Iona 73- Hawks’ last loss was January 2 to St Peter’s.

— Washington State 79, Washington 71— Markelle Fultz missed his third game with a bad knee.

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Sunday

13) Pretty soon the college basketball coaching carousel will start spinning, which begs the question: is it better to be a big fish in a small pond, or a smaller fish in a big pond?

Shaka Smart bolted VCU for Texas and more $$$, but now he is 30-32 in two years, 15-19 in conference games and Longhorn fans are wondering why Rick Barnes got fired.

Guys like Gregg Marshall (Wichita St), Eric Musselman (Nevada) and Archie Miller (Dayton) are winning big in smaller leagues and will surely get offers from schools like NC State, Missouri, Illinois or whatever other jobs open up, but they all make a lot of money now.

Is it worth it to coach in deeper waters for more money, when it is harder to win there?

12) Watching Gonzaga lose at home to BYU late Saturday night, it occurs to you that they haven’t been tested enough by the lame WCC, which was way down this year, other than St Mary’s—even BYU is very young and isn’t as good as usual.

Gonzaga’s guards looked lost in the last few minutes, when the game was tight and a loss seemed possible. Zags hadn’t played a single-digit game since Dec 3, when they won by 7 over Arizona in Los Angeles. 84 days between close games isn’t that healthy for a team.

11) San Antonio Spurs have had 20 consecutive seasons with a winning road record; that is really a great accomplishment.

10) Arizona State 83, USC 82— ASU played starters 199 out of 200 minutes in their loss to UCLA Thursday; I’ve never seen that before. In this game, they played two subs, one 11:00, another 12:00, but they pulled out a win and improved to 7-10 in the Pac-12.

9) Big West Conference is way down this year, but three of their four games Saturday went to overtime, and the fourth game ended 83-80, so solid night of entertainment in that league.

8) Champ Week starts tonight, with four first-round games in the Atlantic Sun tourney at campus sites. Florida Gulf Coast is the #1 seed, Lipscomb the #2 seed.

Ohio Valley tournament will be next, starting on Wednesday.

7) A U of Louisville sophomore thought he won $38,000 at a women’s basketball game Thursday by hitting a layup, foul shot, 3-pointer and half-court shot during a time-out, but he has been told he is ineligible to receive the prize because he played high school ball and the fine print of the contest says no one can collect if they played organized basketball within the last six years. Too bad- the sponsor would win back the $38K in goodwill if they gave the kid the $$$.

6) San Diego State had a great running back this season, Donnel Pumphrey; the school honored the young man during a timeout in the Aztecs’ basketball game Wednesday, but there was one small problem.

Mr Pumphrey showed up wearing a Dodgers’ hat.

People in San Diego don’t like Los Angeles, and since the Chargers just bolted to LA, that feeling has ramped up a little bit, so Mr Pumphrey took some grief on social media for the hat. Took until the second half for someone at the arena to get him a red Aztecs’ cap.

5) I’m a big fan of college basketball adopting the 8-second half-court rule; would encourage teams to press more and also to run the ball up the floor, instead of walking it up.

4) Do you think Jack Nicklaus sits at home and quietly celebrates because Eldrick Woods’ career is in the dumper, which preserves Nicklaus’ record for most majors won?

3) Toughing moment at Michigan State Sunday; senior Eron Harris blew his knee out earlier this year- his career is over, but he suited up for his last home game Sunday and with 0:11 left and the Spartans safely ahead, Harris checked into the game to get one last ovation.

He knelt down, which wasn’t easy with the big knee brace he had on, and kissed the Spartan logo at midcourt. I’m not sure the average fan realizes how much effort these kids put into their playing careers and how much it means to them. It was a pretty cool moment.

2) I was trying to explain to a young person the other day what basketball was like before the shot clock; in short, it wasn’t as fun. Coaches could dominate the game; the game could have almost no flow at all. The shot clock and 3-point shot have made basketball a way better game.

Example: February 22, 1980— While the US Olympic hockey team was beating the Russians in the Miracle on Ice in Lake Placid, my college team was playing in the semifinals of their conference tournament, in Buffalo. People in the corner of the small gym were watching the hockey game on Canadian TV in the corner of the gym.

We lost the game that night in four overtimes; the team that won the tip of all four 5:00 OT’s held the ball for the last shot. I’m not kidding, it was that boring— tense is a better word.

In 1979, a North Carolina-Duke basketball game was 7-0 at halftime. Seriously.

1— Watching college hoop games this weekend, one thing is clear; people are tired. Season is a long one; players, coaches, and maybe most of all the officials are tired. Getting to Champ Week gives everyone a little jolt of energy.
