Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

— Lions 16, Vikings 13— Detroit is 7-4, despite trailing all 11 games in the 4th quarter; a remarkable season.

— Cowboys 31, Redskins 26— Dallas has won 10 in a row, but is now 9-1 vs spread in those games.

— Steelers 28, Colts 7— How do you have Scott Tolzien as your backup QB when you start three rookies on the OL?

— Louisville 62, Wichita State 52— Cardinals were a two-point underdog.

— Baylor 73, Michigan State 58— Spartans are over-scheduled, and Tom Izzo apologized to his team for it.

— Iowa State 73, Indiana State 71— Sycamores got hosed in this game; they took 14 FTs, Iowa State took 29. I had no dog in this fight, was just watching, but this was bad.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

13) Coaching carousel in college football is about to get rolling; there were rumors Thursday night that LSU has a deal with Houston coach Tom Herman, but others are saying it is a ploy to get Texas to ante up some more cash as it pursues Herman to be its coach.

Once jobs start getting filled, there is usually a domino effect, with guys moving upward on the financial scale, but one effect of Herman going to LSU instead of Texas would be that Charlie Strong probably will not get fired unless the Longhorns can get Herman to replace him.

12) LSU 54, Texas A&M 39— Tigers gained 622 yards and Leonard Fournette stayed home. His replacement Derrius Guice ran for 285 yards, a new school record and four TDs.

11) Georgia’s basketball team was getting hammered by the Kansas Jayhawks earlier this week, so the Dawgs called a timeout; after the timeout as the team went back on the court, a mangled dry-erase board was seen on the floor in front of the Georgia bench.

Apparently coach Mark Fox tried to make a point by sacrificing the board, which looked like it had been run over by a Humvee. Coaches do strange things to try and motivate players. Jayhawks wound up winning by 11 on a friendly “neutral” court in Kansas City.

10) Former Jets’ DL Marty Lyons was a great player at Alabama under Bear Bryant, over 30 years ago. He once promised coach Bryant he would get his college degree and on December 10, he will fulfill his promise to a man who passed away almost 34 years ago.

9) UConn’s basketball season is in trouble; the Huskies are 1-4 vs D-I teams, their bench is already #340 (out of 351) in minutes played and now their second-best player (Terry Larrier) is out for the year with a torn ACL. UConn’s 8-man rotation has three freshman, two sophomores; they can’t afford any more injuries and the season is only two weeks old.

8) Herb Sendek got fired as basketball coach at Arizona State in large part because he couldn’t beat rival Arizona; now he is at Santa Clara but his Broncos gave Arizona a good run for their money at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas last night. Sendek is an excellent tactician, not that great a recruiter.

During a late-game timeout, the FS1 camera was right in Santa Clara’s huddle and it was great TV as Sendek was talking to his team. Then he looks up at the camera and says “Please get that out of here”. Dammit!!! Wanted to hear what he was going to say. Arizona won 69-61.

7) On Hard Knocks this summer, Rams coach Jeff Fisher referred to some of his players’ stupid behavior as “7-9 bullshit”, in other words, the stuff losing teams do.

Last Friday night, Rams’ starting CB Troy Hill got a DUI roughly 36 hours before LA lost a home game to the Dolphins. The ultimate “7-9 bullshit” move. Rams didn’t suit him up for the Miami game, released him Monday, then re-signed him to the practice squad, meaning he is probably getting a two-game suspension, in effect, for his stupidity.

Rams are 4-6; they’ll do fairly well to finish 7-9. Another cruddy season, in part because players do not know how to act off the field.

6) Morehead State suspended basketball coach Sean Woods indefinitely, apparently for mistreating one or more of his players. Morehead is 77-55 under Woods but hasn’t made the NCAA tournament; his predecessor made it twice in six years. Awful early in the season to be suspended; curious to see how this plays out.

5) Since the beginning of the 2015 season, Raiders’ QB Derek Carr has thrown 11 4th quarter TD passes that either put Oakland ahead or tied the score. During that time, no other NFL QB has more than six of those.

4) Did Indiana hoop coach Tom Crean do the right thing scheduling a road game at Fort Wayne earlier this week? It is 175 miles from Bloomington to Fort Wayne, and there are a hell of a lot more Hoosier fans than Mastodon fans along those 175 miles, even as there were in Fort Wayne’s home arena Tuesday night.

But the Hoosiers played a true road game and lost; no Top 25 teams do that anymore. Jim Boeheim would rather smile than play a true road game and he ain’t much for smiling. You can bet all over America, coaches are taking note of Fort Wayne’s win and adding more home games or at best, neutral court games to their teams’ schedules.

3) I roll my eyes every time an NFL ref throws a flag in the defensive secondary, then immediate another flag (or 2) is thrown, like the foul is the most obvious call in football history. It happens all the time.

This is known as “selling the call” making it obvious to the crowd that the right call was made, even if it wasn’t. The NFL is terribly over-officiated and this is a small part of it.

2) Is this the best sports week of the year? It is probably the busiest if not the best. College football and basketball; NBA-NHL-NFL. Baseball hot stove stuff is starting, the NASCAR year ended Sunday. Lot of good entertainment.

1) Ralph Branca passed away this week at age 90; he is best-known for giving up the homer Bobby Thomson hit to win the 1951 NL pennant, but Branca was more than that.

A 3-time All-Star, Branca was 88-68 in 322 games (188 starts) in an era where no one counted pitches or cared if a pitcher’s arm was abused. He won 21 games in 1947. If he was on the mound at that critical time of a decisive game, you know he was a damn good pitcher.

His daughter is married to former Mets manager Bobby Valentine.

My dad grew up in New York City, was a huge Brooklyn Dodger fan; sometime in the early 90’s, I can’t remember exactly when, Branca did an appearance at Mohawk **** about seven miles from my dad’s house. I picked him up but didn’t tell him where we were going.

Mr Branca was sitting at a card table, not many people there; I introduced the two of them and soon they were talking like long-lost friends from the neighbohood, reminiscing about Dodgers like Ernie Lombardi, Gene Hermanski, Roy Campanella. It was great fun to listen to.

Armadillo's Write-Up

Friday, November 25

USC is 4-0 with an impressive road win at Texas A&M; Trojans are #326 in experience, but are over-performing so far. USC starts three sophs, two juniors; their eFG% defense is #28 in country- they’re shooting just 30.8% on arc. SMU split pair of neutral court games in NYC, losing by 22 to Michigan after beating Pitt; Mustangs are rebounding 45% of own misses while starting two sophs, two seniors. Pac-12 home favorites are 13-10 vs spread; AAC underdogs are 8-9.

AdvoCare, Orlando

Iowa State snuck by Indiana State 73-71 yesterday; despite shooting 34% from floor, 15-29 on line; they used three guys 33:00+, another three 22+- thats was Cyclones’ first top 200 game of the year. Miami beat Stanford 67-53 yesterday in its first top 100 game of the year. Hurricanes are forcing turnovers 24.8% of time, starting two sophs, two seniors. ACC favorites are 12-7 vs spread away from home; Big X underdogs are 3-2.

Gonzaga is 4-0 but beat three stiffs and a crippled San Diego State team at home; Bulldogs played two guys more than 29:00 in its walkover vs Quinnipiac yesterday (82-62). Zags jump way up in class here, playing Gators in Orlando. Florida starts two juniors, two seniors and has Charleston transfer Barry (Rick’s son) coming off bench- they already have three top 100 wins. SEC teams are 12-8 vs spread on neutral floors. WCC teams are 3-7.

NIT, Brooklyn

Illinois got steamrolled by West Virginia’s press (24 turnovers) in a 89-57 disaster against the Mountaineers yesterday; Illini had no one play over 28:00. Illini is 0-2 vs top 200 teams, with an OT loss at home to Winthrop. Florida State led by 10 at half but lost 89-86 to a wounded Temple squad yesterday, a bad loss for a top 25 teams. Seminoles start a freshman and two sophs. ACC favorites are 12-7 vs spread away from home; Big 14 underdogs are 8-6.

Battle for Atlantis

Michigan State is very young and Izzo apologized for their brutal schedule yesterday; Spartans are 3-3, are #324 in experience, are turning ball over 22% of time and missing lot of defensive assignments. Wichita State lost by 10 to Louisville yesterday; shot 31.6% from floor. Shockers lead the country in bench minutes, which can’t hurt when you’re playing for third day in row. Big 14 teams are 11-7 vs spread on a neutral floor; MVC teams are 5-5.

Baylor beat VCU/Michigan State last two days and looked good doing it; Bears already have four top 40 wins; they used four kids 31:00+ yesterday, in a decisive win. Baylor allowed an average of 60.6 pts/game in its 5-0 start. Louisville beat Wichita State by 10 as a 2-point dog yesterday; Cardinals struggled on Wednesday with Old Dominion but they’re playing great defense, with #4 eFG% defense in country. Baylor starts four juniors and a senior; curious to see how they hold up playing third day in a row.

LSU was awful Wednesday but beat Old Dominion yesterday, shooting 65.6% inside arc but turning ball over 21 times (-10). Tigers played four kids 30:00+ yesterday, two 34+- they’re playing #44 pace with #331 experienced team. VCU was down big early to St John’s but won by six; Rams play lot of kids so playing three days in row shouldn’t be bad for them. Favorites are 14-4 vs spread in A-14 teams’ games on neutral floors. SEC teams are 12-8 on neutral floors.

Wooden Legacy, Fullerton

Texas A&M smashed an overmatched Northridge squad by 22 yesterday; Aggies are are 3-1 but lost at home to USC, only team they’ve played ranked over #197. A&M is starting three sophs which explains USC loss. Virginia Tech played its best player 40:00 and two others 31:00 in a 20-point win over New Mexico. Hokies have #11 eFG% in country, but yesterday was their first top 200 win. ACC teams are 12-9 vs spread on neutral floors; Big X teams are 9-7.

UCLA is an offensive dynamo, scoring 104.4 pts/game in its 5-0 start; 88 points is least they’ve scored, but Nebraska will be first top 100 team they’ve played. Bruins’ eFG% is 64.7% (#2 in country); they’re playing #10 pace while making 46% on arc, but they are thin and played only two subs before they cleared bench last nite. Nebraska played four guys 30:00+, another three 23+ in 80-78 win over Dayton yesterday. Huskers start four sophomores. A-14 favorites are 6-2 vs spread on a neutral floor; SEC underdogs are 8-7.

Nevada/Buffalo didn’t play yesterday. Nevada used four guys 37:00 in tough 82-78 win over Oakland Wednesday; Wolf Pack played only six guys more than 3:00- they made 11-20 on arc and might not have been better team. Nevada is 4-1 with only loss at a very good St Mary’s team. Buffalo’s last two wins are vs D-II and D-III teams; they lost by 33 to Xavier, beat Niagara by 10- hard to tell much about them. Bulls are #294 in experience. Mountain West favorites are 11-7 vs spread; MAC underdogs are 8-9.

Weber State lost at Stanford/Pepperdine, got its first D-I win over Cal-Davis last night; they used three guys 30:00+ but also played eight guys 17+. Wildcats start three sophs, two seniors, young team. Iona likes to run; they got first win of year last night, beating a lousy Drake team. Gaels lost at Florida State/Nevada; they could have rematch with Wolf Pack in tourney final Saturday night. Iona starts two transfers; they’re still adjusting to each other. Big Sky teams are 17-19 vs spread; MAAC teams are 11-17.

Memphis scored 91.3 pts/game in its 4-0 start, but what a collection of stiffs they’ve played; Tigers are playing #41 pace with #256 experienced team- they’re protecting ball well but shooting only 54% on line. Providence lost by 5 at Ohio State and beat three stiffs; Friars are playing a slower tempo (#218) as they replace star G Dunn. Providence has #59 eFG% defense, always a good sign. AAC teams are 10-10 vs spread away from home; Big East teams are 12-10.

Washington scored 96.7 pts/game in its three wins but lost 98-90 at home to Yale, whose best player didn’t play. Huskies are #339 in experience; they can recruit, but then guys leave for pros too soon- they’ve got #9 eFG% so far. Western Kentucky lost by 21 at disciplined Belmont and beat three stiffs; they’ve made 41.8% on arc, are fouling less than any team in country. Hilltoppers start four seniors and a junior, #13 experience team. Pac-12 teams are 4-10 vs spread on neutral floors this month; C-USA underdogs are 10-8 vs spread.

LAS VEGAS (AP) Lauri Markkanen had 16 points and nine rebounds, and No. 8 Arizona held off Santa Clara 69-61 on Thursday night to reach the championship game of the Continental Las Vegas Invitational.

Kobi Simmons added 14 points for the Wildcats (5-0), who will play Butler for the title on Friday.

Arizona limited the Broncos to 36 percent shooting (9 of 25) in the second half. And yet, Santa Clara sliced its deficit to 59-58 when Jared Brownridge drained a long 3-pointer with 4:10 left - the team's fourth straight 3 during a 12-4 run.

But then Keanu Pinder converted both ends of a 1-and-1, Santa Clara turned the ball over and Parker Jackson-Cartwright hit a 3 to push Arizona's lead back to 64-58. The Wildcats closed the game on a 10-3 spurt, and the Broncos (3-3) went scoreless over the final 3 minutes.

Brownridge had 25 points for Santa Clara.

No. 10 LOUISVILLE 62, WICHITA STATE 52

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) - Donovan Mitchell made two 3-pointers in the final 4 1/2 minutes and scored 14 points to help Louisville beat Wichita State for a spot in the Battle 4 Atlantis championship game.

Quentin Snider also scored 14 points for the Cardinals (5-0). They will play Baylor for the title.

Wichita State (5-1) shot just 32 percent for the game, while Louisville - which shot 37 percent - helped itself by making 17 of 23 free throws and taking a 46-33 rebounding advantage.

Markis McDuffie and Shaquille Morris each scored 10 for the Shockers.

No. 20 BAYLOR 73, No. 24 MICHIGAN STATE 58

PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas (AP) - Johnathan Motley scored 20 of his 26 points in the first half and Baylor beat Michigan State to reach the Battle 4 Atlantis championship game.

Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. added 14 points and eight rebounds - nearly all in the second half - for the Bears (5-0). They sprinted out of the break with a 12-2 run and shot 55 percent in the second half.

Freshman Miles Bridges had 15 points for the Spartans (3-3). They shot 39 percent in the second half, going 1 for 10 on 3-pointers.

No. 14 UCLA 99, PORTLAND 77

FULLERTON, Calif. (AP) - Freshman sensation Lonzo Ball had 18 points and 11 assists for his second career double-double, Thomas Welch added 16 points and 10 rebounds, and UCLA romped past Portland in the first round of the Wooden Legacy.

All five starters for the Bruins (5-0) scored in double figures. Isaac Hamilton had 16 points, TJ Leaf added 14 and Bryce Alford 13.

Jazz Johnson scored 25 points for the Pilots (3-1), who trailed 45-37 at halftime after going 7 of 13 on 3-pointers. UCLA used an 11-0 run early in the second half to open a 21-point lead, allowing the Bruins to put on a show for the partisan crowd.

TEMPLE 89, No. 25 FLORIDA STATE

NEW YORK (AP) - Quinton Rose scored 26 points, including two free throws with 2 seconds left, in Temple's victory over Florida State in the NIT Season Tip-Off at the Barclays Center.

No. 11 GONZAGA 82, QUINNIPIAC 62

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) - Jonathan Williams and Zach Collins led a balanced offense with 13 points apiece, helping Gonzaga pull away from Quinnipiac in the first round of the AdvoCare Invitational at Disney World.

aturday’s List of 13: Midnight musings……..

13) Memphis 48, Houston 44— This coaching carousel stuff in college football is terribly unfair to the players playing now. Houston Cougars beat Oklahoma/Louisville this year, but every time they win a game, speculation starts about coach Herman’s next job.

Houston has now lost to Navy-Memphis-SMU; what should have been a great year will now be a very good one- they’re going to have a new coach next year. Such are the realities of major college football. Life changes quickly.; have to win as much as you can while you can

12) So the latest Herman update is that LSU will probably keep Ed Orgeron if Herman goes to Texas and Charlie Strong will keep his job if Herman goes to LSU. We forget that coaches have assistant coaches and everyone has families and a lot of people are affected by this stuff.

11) Miami Ohio’s football team started this season 0-6, obviously a disaster, but the Red Hawks recovered and finished the regular season at 6-6 and bowl eligible. Good for the kids and the coaches who didn’t quit on the season- you don’t see that very often.

10) Pirates signed utility guy Sean Rodriguez for two years, $11.5M. Versatile guy; seems like every team has a guy like him now.

9) I mentioned last week how Long Beach State hoop coach Dan Molson makes $600K a year; well the 49ers are now 1-6 this year and lost to Binghamton/Florida Gulf Coast the last two days. Not exactly $600K worth of coaching.

8) ESPN is televising the Wooden tournament from Cal State-Fullerton this weekend; during UCLA’s game Thursday night, they did something that bugged me. During the game, reporter Jeff Goodman interviews Lonzo Ball’s dad in the stands. Why?

Since when do kid’s parents get interviewed during the game? Why is this a good idea?

7) I’m convinced that NFL teams should throw more towards their sideline, especially on longer passes; you see lot of flags thrown when guys on the sideline scream for a call— you yell loud enough, long enough, you’re going to get one (or two) calls.

6) Long time ago, Ole Miss hoop coach Andy Kennedy was a good player; he took recruiting trips across the south, one of which was to Georgia Tech, where his player/host was Craig Neal, now the coach at New Mexico. Kennedy wound up playing for NC State and later UAB.

Apparently the two guys remained friends thru the years, so when Neal’s son Cullen transferred away from his dad’s team to a place where the home fans were less hostile (seriously) he went to play for his dad’s friend Kennedy at Ole Miss. Very good get for the Rebels.

5) James Madison fired coach Matt Brady LY, despite the Dukes going 40-25 the last two years; they made the NCAAs in 2013. No sure why he was fired but this year JMU is 0-5 and they’re looking stupid for firing Brady, a mostly successful coach. None of JMU’s losses are to a top 100 team, so it doesn’t bode well for their conference games, either.

4) Steve Levy/Brian Greise have been a very good announce combo on college football games this year and Joe Davis (Dodgers’ TV guy) does well on FS1, mostly with Bill Raftery. Some people just have great chemistry together and the broadcast becomes us listening to two guys talking about ball, which is ideal and what we want. No shtick, just conversation.

3) Virginia Tech has a very good point guard (Justin Robinson) which is why the Hokies are 24-16 the last year-plus, a marked improvement. Robinson played 76 of a possible 80:00 in Tech’s first two games out at Fullerton. They’ll need to get him a little more rest in ACC play.

2) Texas Tech 54, Baylor 35— Wow the wheels really fell off for Baylor; they’re 6-5 and headed straight south, losing five in a row after a 6-0 start. Bears allowed 47.6 pts/game during the skid. You wonder if they’ll even bother going to a bowl game.

1— I was lucky enough to put myself thru college as a student manager of a small college hoop team; it was mostly great fun. One night we’re playing a local rival; one of their players dives for a loose ball and crashes into the scorer’s table, about ten feet from me on the bench. Great effort by the kid, but he didn’t save the ball. Looked like he could even be hurt.

His coach was a pretty intense guy; he comes over, i figure the coach is going to help the kid up, see if he is OK. He looks down at the kid, who is slowly getting up and screams “Next time, get it!!!!” and storms away.

Not a great moment, but it was part of why we almost always beat them. How about patting the kid on the back for a great try? No bueno.

— Baylor 66, Louisville 63— Bears came back from down 18 to win Battle of Atlantis- they’re very athletic and very underrated.

— Iona/Nevada already played once this month, will meet again in the finals of the Alaskan Shootout. Nevada won first meeting 91-76 in Reno Sunday night.

— Butler came from behind and beat Arizona 69-65 in the finals of the Continental Tire tourney at Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas.

— Iowa State/Gonzaga will meet in the finals of Advocate tourney in Orlando Sunday.

— Texas A&M/UCLA will meet in the finals of the Wooden Legacy tournament Sunday at the Honda Center in Anaheim.
