Civil Rights Leader Blasts Dean for 'N'-word Fund Raiser

A Washington, D.C.-based civil rights leader is blasting Democratic presidential front-runner Howard Dean for presiding over a fund raiser where blacks were derided as "n----rs," a gay female referred to as "a big lezzie" and presidential rival Joe Lieberman made fun of for being an Orthodox Jew.

"These bigoted and racist attacks upon the Jewish, African-American and Gay Communities for profit are a disgrace and have no place in American politics," complained Kevin Martin, political director of the African-American Republican Leadership Council.

"Howard Dean has shown he is a candidate for racial division and hatred and his supporters are nothing more than the new century's Ku Klux Klan," Martin continued.

Martin's complaint comes as Dean's fellow Democrats, including rival Al Sharpton, have yet to express any outrage over the ugly incident, which took place last Monday and went unnoticed until the New York Post revealed the details this week.

As part of the evening's entertainment, "comedian David Cross used the N-word for blacks in a disjointed 'joke,'" reported the paper's Washington Bureau chief, Deborah Orin.

"Sandra Bernhard insulted Condoleezza Rice in racial terms with a 'Yes Massa' accent at another Dean fundraiser the same night. ... "

Slurs and profanity seemed to be the order of the evening, as Vice President Dick Cheney's daughter Mary was derided as "a big lezzie" and President Bush was slammed as 'this piece of living, breathing s---.'"

Dean later described the language as "wrong," adding that he didn't have "much tolerance for ethnic humor."

But the top Democrat's comments did little to assuage Mr. Martin, who observed, "Howard Dean's campaign has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that the Robert Byrd wing of the Democrat Party is alive and well."

Had Dean been smart about this, he would have made a public statement right away, apologising for these things. Apparently he was steaming mad that night. It's always better to admit to stuff up front than to have it uncovered on you.

Tend to disagree with that xpanda,

I think politically it is better to let things leak out slowly so that the people become less sensitized to what comes out later.

Take Bill Clinton for example. Had he come out right away and admitted he was cigar f*cking an intern and recieving a BJ he'd been toast the next day. His strategy to keep the left behind him, was to slowly let the details come out and then months later come out and say it all old news. Yeah, I remember he "said" he wanted all over with sooner rather than later - but that was not the way it went down.

Political desensitization.

African-American groups are generally not behind Dean for the nomination ('cept Jesse Jr.). My sense is that Wes Clark is overwhelmingly getting their support -- see Andrew Young, Charlie Rangel and others. This is going to hurt him in the South, states like SC, Tenn.

JP: I agree with what you say about Clinton, but in his case, it wasn't his fundraisers getting BJs at work ... Dean didn't actually use the 'n' word himself, so could have used this as an opportunity to make an anti-racist stance.

This story (and others) isn't being reported by the mass media because they've already annointed Dean and they're satisfied with their expected Bush v. Dean matchup.

This is blown out of proportion. What's the big deal? It makes me sick that this is even a news story.

I agree with xpanda, I think Dean blew a great chance to appeal to moderate voters at this incident. If he had come out and strongly chastised these 'comedians' for their behavior he would have won over a lot of middle of the road voters - the very people he needs to win the general election.

When you have a press that is the lapdog for the administration in power you'll see crap like this.

Just want to make sure that everyone sees both sides of the issues.

Nothing but facts here!
