Where did circuit city go wrong?
Their merchandising sucks for one. It become too hard to locate shit in their stores. If you go to Best Buy or even Fry's their DVD's, CD's and Video Games were in a nice viewing order. But at Circuit City you had to flip through this white label dividers to find a certain title. This was the main reason why I switched to Best Buy 2 years ago.
One could also say they neglected to sell home appliances and their floor sales people were a bunch of liars. I remember going there on black friday two years ago and they had two HD television sets on display and one set clearly had a better picture then the other. They put a sign in front of the tv with the clearer picture and said this television set has the Monster Cable HDMI. Of course the other television set wasn't even on the HD channel it was on the standard television channel. I wonder how many $100 HDMI cables they sold that day?
Their Circuit City in store credit card sucks too. I bought a Vizio TV and an Ipod from them 3 years ago and used my Circuit City card and got 0% interest for 18 months. But when I wanted to use my circuit city card to buy just some DVD's. I was told that when I make my monthly payment that my payment would go entirely towards my earlier purchases and I would end up paying interest on my DVD's unless I paid off my entire balance. So naturally I just used my regular debit card to pay for my DVD's.
All in all I just think Circuit City had too many stores open and it affected the dollar earned per store so the people that ran the stores just didn't care if they store they ran made money or not. I hope Electronics Fry's is next up to close down. I hate that place!!!
