LOL Swami "poker Pirate"...

im not saying its all luck but I think IMO its 80% LUCK 20% knowing how to play. for example, I think if you know how to suck them in when you have a GREAT hand into thinking you have shit and throw in a check raise now and then you become a dangerous player in a tourney as the other players know you are sneaky in that respect ..IMO

I hear ya...what I think I mistook your comments for is the idea that luck was a factor with Moneymaker only.

What you will find if you read enough hand histories and tournament reports is that, generally speaking, ALL the winners of the major tournaments suck out on someone on the way to a title. These guys are good but EVERYONE needs a little luck whether it's Moneymaker or Chan.

Hell..I won a tournament not too long ago with 1300+ players. In Level 2 I got suckered all-in preflop by someone with AA against my KK. I pulled one of my two outs to win. I certainly played well that day but without the cards and that faithful King the first 20 minutes of the tourney I would have been on the rail. I can probably hold my own but I "ain't" that good!!!! There have been tooooo many times when I've recognized the sucker and got up out of my chair and walked to the cage or a new table.

Luck decides it almost every time. "Jesus" Ferguson won the title on a two-outer, one that if he didn't hit he would have been almost certainly relegated to second. Afterwards he said "TJ is just so good and relentless I felt I had to take a gamble and hope it worked out". This coming from a long-time poker professional who made a lot of great plays over the course of the tournament before his heads up win with one of the greatest to ever play Hold-em. Luck and timing are everything. Moneymaker made moves early in the tournament to put himself in a position to get lucky, don't forget that. The only guy you could really say was completely lucky was Kevin McBride. I mean people watching that guy thought unless the deck absolutely hit him he couldn't possibly win the tournament. Well the deck almost hit him hard enough to be another Champion, but that one would have truly been lucky. He was making plays that even many amateurs know better not to make.

I went to the Borgata to play in a poker tourney recently and felt like an old man. 110 players and 98% of the field was under 30. This is 100% due to Moneymaker, poker coverage on the travel channel/the World Poker Tour, and the fact that poker is now accepted in the mainstream.

Was this the Friday tourney? If so, what's the average number of rebuys per player?

Fridays @ 4pm there is a no limit tourney at Tropicana and at Borgata. One is $65 and the other $100 and they rotate weekly. Add on and rebuys are the same dollar amount as the entry. About 100 people from what I am told a week 80% of them rebuy and then add on so there is some pretty good money in the pools.

To me there is more value staying home in front of my computer because the 4-7 hour grind of a tourny takes a toll on every aspect of your life. Once in a while it is not bad though if you are with friends or something.

Have played in many NO LIMIT tournaments in Vegas and enjoyed most of every second.

The old Desert Inn had a DAILY NO LIMIT tournament everyday that drew some very very good players on a regular basis.

Unfortunately, I wasnt one of them, but I was there grinding away more days than not.

In its day, it was the best DAILY no-limit game in town.

There were a total of about 5-6 places that ran daily tournaments.

Thanks Krackman. I want to enter that Borgata tourney but I hear realistically you need to toss in about $500 to have a shot unless you win a few big pots early. I'm not good enough to play in $500 tournaments...lol.

I love the feel of cards and chips so I'll never stop playing live. With that said, I HATE that drive home from AC whether I'm up or down.

If you like ring games the 6/12 and 10/20 at The Borg are great. I was there a few weeks ago and the 1/2 NL ($60 min/$300 max) was also apparently VERY good if you are a good NL player.

BTW, saw Moneymaker and the others there during the WPT tournament. They took up all the space in the room for their damned TV tournament while I was trying to get in a good game of 6/12 Limit HE..bastids!!!!

Check back on this guy in a few years. He is a big fav to be in the hole and then some. Great story on legend Stu Ingar. That was one of the best poker players of all time. All world in backgammon I guess. Great stories out there on this guy.

Luck had some to do with it, but Chris played with alot of poise and "Patience", he picked his times and out played everyone, plain and simple!

Sam Farha or any other pro knows that for the most part you not playing your cards, your playing your opponant, Sam was manhandled head to head, those are the facts.

Though not a card player, I've watched last year's WSOP twice on Friday Marathons, and I thought Moneymaker to be better than many of his opponents estimation of him, I also saw where the river brought divine intervention for him no less than 4 to 5 times, an astonishing amount of beats on great players by a WSOP champ.

I would put my money on Farha, Harrington, or Vahedi more than not over CM.

But Moneymaker seems much more for real than the previous year's luck-guy Robert Varkoni..this guy is a fish!

Doyle looked like he was about to toss his groceries when Varkoni was showing off his WSOP bracelet to the table(which fit his wrist like a necklace..a real dweeb)..and his parting remarks were harsh in consideration of Doyle's reputation as a gentleman(speaks volumes!).
