This year, he has spent a lot of time working out at the facility and is primed for a rebound. We agree, as the Titans' workhorse sits third in our first set of running back rankings.

It doesn't sound like Palmer is intent on beating Johnson into the ground this season even though the back is in excellent shape by all accounts. "He's certainly capable of [400 touches]," Palmer said. "But what does it mean for the team? Does it help us win?"

He spent the spring/summer at the Titans' training facility instead of his hometown and is expecting a "big role." The organization appears pleased. "I think Chris (Johnson) has been great," coach Mike Munchak said. "He has done everything we asked him to do, and he's looked good."

Johnson set a career-high in receptions last season with 57, but he thought that was a little fluky. In offensive coordinator Chris Palmer's vertical scheme, the emphasis is expected to be on getting the ball downfield to playmakers like Kenny Britt (if available), Kendall Wright, Jared Cook and Nate Washington. And if strong-armed Jake Locker wins the starting job, he won't dink-and-dunk as much as Matt Hasselbeck does.

Johnson turned in a career-worst year in 2011, playing soft and refusing to finish runs. Charley Casserly reported that the Titans believe Johnson is "on a mission" in 2012, and Rapoport echoed that sentiment. "I've been stunned," said Rapoport after watching Johnson practice. "He looks like the Chris Johnson of old. He's fast, he's in shape. Looks like he's primed for a big year." If Johnson regains form, he could reemerge as the No. 1 running back in all of fantasy.

</td></tr><tr><td class="vaLink">Ringer enters the game on passing downs, but with him out, Johnson could see a heavier dose of snaps in Week 1. CJ?K is in better shape entering the 2012 season than he was in 2011 after his holdout, and is said to be "night and day" compared to last year. He is a top-five fantasy running back for this week's tilt with the Patriots. Darius Reynaud and Jamie Harper will be the Titans' emergency backs. Johnson should be headed for an easy 20 touches.

clear.gif
</td></tr><tr><td class="vaLink">The good news is, Munchak is standing behind Johnson following his most puzzling performance to date. The bad news is, it's Week 1 and Munchak is already being forced to endorse his $55 million running back. Munchak believes there were instances where CJ?K was "looking for bigger gains than what was available," and said blame for the awful afternoon didn't rest exclusively on either Johnson or the offensive line's shoulders. Johnson never rushed for fewer than 13 yards during his immensely disappointing 2011. The Titans will visit a Chargers' team in Week 2 that ranked 20th against the run last season. Johnson's backup Javon Ringer is currently sidelined with an elbow infection.

</td></tr><tr><td class="vaLink">We've alluded to it before, but the saddest part is that Munchak has to confirm each week whether Johnson is still his starting running back. The guy has an $8 million base salary and he's averaging 1.1 yards per carry. If the struggles keep up and Javon Ringer gets healthy, the Titans may think long and hard about a switch. Ringer replaced Johnson in the lineup for long stretches last season, so Munchak and his staff have at least pondered it previously.
