Chargers questionable play-calling

In both games so far, this Charger offense has been pretty disappointing despite some OK stats and the play-calling pretty questionable.

Both their opponents played poorly so far and seems like they haven't been able to take full advantage.

Seems like they never run the ball when it's there. They have been making some hay on short passes, but also quite a few plays where they opted for a shorter pass that ends up going nowhere instead of a nice draw right up the middle. Maybe they don't have faith in the run game?

At the same time, they also seem unwilling to take downfield risks. Herbert has a strong arm, that's really his best quality in terms of physical ability. Not sure why they are having him try to throw these 7-8 yard out routes instead of try to open the field a little bit. Seems like they never try to roll Herbert out and try to make a play. Their strategy worked early but the Chiefs adjusted, and the Chargers never changed it up

Then when something is starting to work, they try to do something dumb like that trick play (even though they ended up scoring). Just weird

Similar issues in Week 1 as well against the Raiders. Odd play-calling, unwillingness to take risks. Seems like a talented team but wonder if they can really take that leap

I came out of that game thinking the Chargers were the better team.. The defense will carry its own weight this year.. It's still Sept , so most teams are still working out the kinks. Unfortunate late red zone turnover, or we would be having a different conversation..
Chargers still win this division imo.

One bad turnover, created by a lazy play by the intended receiver IMO, turned an impressive road win into a loss

I think Mahomes was lucky he got away with the 4 picks the Chargers dropped or otherwise misplayed

They played way too conservative in the mid to late 3rd quarter, plus 4th quarter. Chiefs woke a bit too, but Staley really needs to learn when to take a shot or two....secondary not full strength for the Chiefs. Have to keep them honest

Mahomes and Herbert both got away with some bad throws. Mahomes probably a few more

Herbert really needs to learn how to put the ball out and away when they're near the goal line. First drive too, lame duck pass when he has a guy wide open in the flat.

Mahomes throw some duds too, but ultimately made more great throws

Bad placement of the ball. Defender is often going to try and jump that. When you have a physical advantage from that yardage you can get a clean look if you throw it high and away. Herbert looked dead set on trying to get in there, and it got sniffed out.

Yeah they looked better for stretches of last night.

Schedule very fortunate for Chargers upcoming too, whereas KC has a gauntlet coming up.

Hopefully they don't take a nap against Jacksonville.

I actually don't mind the uptempo play there. It was their most effective offense throughout the game - kept the Chiefs on their heels

They had different reads. If WR turns left, hits him in the numbers. Who was wrong? IDK Tony Romo would have told us ?

The WR picking up his mouth piece while the interceptor started running down the field tells us where his head was at

Yeah the WR was gassed

But in general want to keep ball to outside to eliminate risk of a pick. He might catch it if he goes other way but defenders have better chance to make play. Even a hand in there get create deflection in crowded end zone.

Probably a different outcome if they slow down and take time for it. I think when you go tempo like that you're better off with a hand off out of shotgun.

On the Chargers pick Everett was gassed and wanted out of the game but they didn't let him off the field because of no huddle. I agree with PFF in that it was Everett's fault. Mahomes had 4 turnover worthy (should have been int) plays which is a brutal game.

Herbert made some gutsy throws down the stretch. That one that set up the touchdown was badass. Major props to him

And they're saying that it's a rib cartilage issue and not broken ribs, which definitely would've bothered him all season long. I'm not sure of the difference, but hopefully rib cartilage heals quicker and is not as restrictive. I hope so anyway, excellent young QB.

I believe the difference is a broken rib is an injury to rib bone itself where as a cartilage injury is to the tissue/muscle around the rib bones.

From what I understand it can be equally as painful, impacting breathing and movement, but will heal significantly faster than a broken rib. However, that healing time is likely not accounting for getting hit by NFL defensive players on a weekly basis.

I was listening to moving the chains on Sirius XM. Jim Miller said that cartilage is the worse of the two. It could linger the whole year if playing while the rib would heal. I would have thought the opposite.
