Match Day One
Rangers vs Ajax
Rangers Draw No Bet +360
As I spoke about in my Champions League primer, Ajax is a team I’ll be looking to get the fade machine out on throughout the group stage —- and we’ll be putting my hunch to a test on Match Week 1 with the Scottish side Rangers.
To pull and upset both in a one-game spot against heavy favorites in this competition you need; 1) To have played in European competitions in previous years; 2) the side is comfortable playing without the ball, and, 3) have the attacking talent capable of threatening some of the better defense —- Rangers fits the profile well don’t they?
Just last year in the Europa league the Scottish Champions managed to upset Dortmund en route to a finals loss to Frankfurt on penalties. Heartbreaking to say the least for Rangers —- but the valuable experience was earned and will be needed if they are to find a way into the Round of 16. And while the offseason loss of Ben Davis, Calvin Bassey (to Ajax), and Ridman Yilmaz, will certainly hurt a defense that helped them piece together a +3.8x overall throughout the entirety of the Europa League last year —- this line is too wide.
On the otherside, Ajax isn’t the same, and at a certain point, the turnover becomes too much. Ajax just lost a lot from that team many loved so much last season —— Antony, Lisandro Martinez, Ryan Gravenberch, and Sébastien Haller are gone, along with manager Erik ten Hag. So, I have a little bit of a difficult time seeing this side that’s yet to really play a testing match this season warrant this heavy of a price. So I’m taking a shot here on Rangers to pull off the road upset.
