Americans Told To Wear Masks As Swine Flu Spreads

Published on 04-26-2009 Email To Friend Print Version

Churches stood empty in Mexico City today and football matches were played to vacant stadiums, as soldiers and health workers patrolled the subway in an effort to prevent the spread of a deadly strain of swine flu.

North of the border, in the US, doctors were advising people worried about the illness to buy painters’ masks from DIY stores as a precautionary measure. Authorities across the globe were torn between the imperative of slowing the spread of a potential flu pandemic and the need to avoid bringing every big city to a grinding halt.

Tonight the US authorities were still allowing people to cross the border from Mexico, where it is thought that the swine flu emerged, but Customs officials at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa crossings were given protective clothing.

Michael Bloomberg, the Mayor of New York, said that the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention had confirmed that eight pupils at a city high school were infected with swine flu after some had returned from Cancún, in Mexico, two weeks ago.

In Mexico, health workers were screening bus stations and airports, handing out surgical masks and looking for possible flu cases. People were advised to seek medical attention if they suffered from multiple symptoms, which include a fever of more than 100F, body aches, coughing, a sore throat, respiratory congestion and, in some cases, vomiting and diarrhoea.

Hundreds of public events were called off to keep people from spreading the virus in crowds. Zoos and schools have been closed, visits to juvenile correction centres suspended and restaurants were virtually empty.

Some who ventured out expressed a sense of bravado. Roland Guerrero, sitting at a city centre café, said: “They have blown this out of proportion. They say there have been 20 deaths here. But what is that in a city of 20 million? Nobody will be talking about this by Tuesday.”

But Ricardo Noriega, 63, a businessman who lives in Mexico City, said: “This is serious and the next few days will prove if they can contain it.”

In Spain, which has a large Mexican émigré population, seven suspected cases were being investigated. All had recently returned from Mexico. Spanish authorities were contacting passengers on the same flights as the people suspected of having the flu. Four suspected cases have been reported in France and six in Canada, as well as one in Israel. In New Zealand authorities said that ten pupils were likely to have swine flu after a school trip to Mexico.

Traumatised by the “ghost town” memories of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) outbreak, Asian governments switched immediately into crisis mode today, racing to strengthen quarantining procedures. For Hong Kong, where Sars killed nearly 300 in 2003, the World Health Organisation’s weekend warning that this was a health event “of international concern” was especially chilling. The city was the focal point in 1968 of a flu pandemic that claimed a million lives around the world.

The World Health Organisation’s decision to raise the alert level was especially evocative because the agency’s head is Hong Kong’s former Health Minister, Margaret Chan, the doctor credited with pulling the city through the Sars outbreak.

The constant threat of bird flu mutating into a human pandemic has meant that many Asian countries now routinely use thermographic technology to screen passengers from areas where the fever may be present. Those checks are now being run on passengers arriving from Mexico, California and Texas. Countries that do not have the equipment are using medical questionnaires and other health checks.

With big travel agencies cancelling all flights to Mexico, and emergency health ministry hotlines overrun with calls, Japan’s Prime Minister, Taro Aso, convened the Cabinet crisis committee and ordered it to “stop the entry of swine flu at Japan’s borders”.

The White House said that President Obama’s health “was never in any danger”, despite reports that Felipe Solis, an archaeologist he met on a trip to Mexico last week, had died soon after from “flu-like symptoms”.

Robert Gibbs, the White House Press Secretary, said that based on the incubation period for swine flu, there was no reason for Mr Obama to be tested for the disease. Although the President is being briefed on the situation every few hours, Mr Gibbs insisted: “This is not a time for panic.”

The Houston Federal Executive Board sponsored on April 14-15, Interagency Continuity Influenza Pandemic Tabletop Exercise

Houston, Texas - Most people recognize the value of a fire drill. Adults and children alike recognize the usual fire drill steps include evacuating the building and reaching a pre-designated spot.

What most people do not recognize is that a fire drill is really an emergency evacuation plan and emergency evacuation plans are growing to include drills such as an influenza pandemic event.

The Houston Federal Executive Board sponsored such a drill, April 14-15. The Interagency Continuity Influenza Pandemic Tabletop Exercise was as an opportunity for federal, state, and local emergency coordinators to discuss how their agencies would manage during a pandemic event.

“My goal since 9-11 is to facilitate the preparedness of federal agencies in the Houston area by providing emergency training opportunities,” said Houston Federal Executive Board Director Michael Mason. “Every class we offer, we open it to state and local agencies where the emergency managers can create partnerships during the training rather than during an emergency.”

Attendees to FEMA's Pandemic Flu exercise work in small groups discussing procedures for ensuring essential services are not interrupted during a pandemic event.

The training, provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, was interactive requiring attendees to break into small groups to discuss the scenario and the current procedures their agency used to manage an emergency. Group members discussed what certain procedures should be implemented at varying stages and why other procedures could wait.

“A primary focus of this exercise identified the operational impact an agency faces when 30 to 40 percent of their personnel are unable to come to work,” said Chief Jeremy Luczkowski, U.S. Customs and Border Protection. “Developing plans to deal with Pandemic-specific issues is challenging for an agency that deals directly with the public on a daily basis.”

Though this training provided a learning atmosphere, what it did not provide was a rigid, concrete template for dealing with an influenza pandemic. In fact, the trainers for this course explained that this exercise will reach many goals but creating a template is not of them.

“Interaction between all emergency coordinators at the federal, tribal, state and local levels is very important,” said Brad McDannald, FEMA Regional Continuity manager. “We work to get agencies at different levels to come together during an emergency and accomplish one goal. Partnership is key to ensuring every emergency manager at every level gets mutual support to ensure there is continuity of essential services.”

Attendees listened as trainers announced that presently, the influenza strain is infecting only wild or domestic birds outside of North America. As the scenario unfolded to include deaths around the world and the first reported case of the influenza strain in the United States, attendees outlined their agency’s response and answered many questions about their plans.

“What does your agency do when employees are too sick to come to work but feel they need to, possibly passing the illness along to others? Does your agency have a policy on how to deal with this?” McDannald asked as he introduced the scenario.

The tabletop exercise did not require emergency crews to mobilize but it did require managers to reach past their continuity binders to look for answers.

“This training allowed for a good exchange of information,” said Chief Bill Woods, U.S. Customs and Border Protection. “Every day we see our operation in the same way, yet when we are discussing our procedures in small groups, someone outside the agency with a different view will comment on how well that procedure might work for their own agency and vice versa. It’s a great time to exchange information.”

The information exchange went beyond the 100 attendees participating in the training event.

“I absolutely enjoy these training opportunities because it’s amazing what I learn from the participants,” said Bob Hominick, General Services Administration trainer. “They are resourceful; they understand there is a vested interest in our collective success.”

In the end, the attendees agreed they would make some adjustments to ensure that they have a solid plan into action. A plan is necessary because they already know that not everyone will want to evacuate the building when the fire alarm goes off.

Mexican swine flu may have originated at US-owned pig breeding farm

By Mario Andrade - April 26, 2009 3:30 PM

AUSTIN, Texas -- The recent swine flu outbreak taking place in Mexico may have originated at a US-owned pig-breeding farm by the name of Granjas Carroll (aka Carroll Farms), which is owned, in part by the Smithfield Food Company.

Smithfield also promotes the consumption of genetically-altered foods, and even owns certain genetic lines of pork breeding. On April 12 of 2009, before the swine flu outbreak was covered by mainstream media outlets, the Mexican newspaper La Jornada broke a story on how Carroll Farms was polluting the drinking water near the towns of La Gloria and Perote, in Veracruz.

According to La Jornada, Carroll Farms maintains a strong political influence in municipal governments in the area. Recently, group of environmental protesters that blocked a highway near the Carroll Farms facilities was arrested. Among them were Guadalupe Serrano Gaspar, a 66-year-old man who said was arrested by undercover police officers. Local residents from 20 towns nearby in Veracruz and the bordering state of Puebla also oppose what they consider deplorable environmental practices by Carroll Farms. The complaints from local residents range from reports of large quantities of pig excrement in the waterways to the smell of chemicals and feces in several towns.

Veratect, which is company that tracks epidemic outbreaks, has posted a timeline of events that also indicates that the Mexican swine flu outbreak may have started in Veracruz, Mexico near the Carroll Farms facilities. According to the Veratect timeline, more than 400 local residents at La Gloria, Veracruz and other nearby towns reported having strong flu-like symptoms days before the outbreak was reported by the media. Local health authorities in La Gloria and Perote have determined that this “strange” flu-like disease or “new strain of the flu” was spread to the local towns by flies that feed on pig feces. In the town of La Gloria, 60 percent of the 3,000 inhabitants have been infected.

The newspaper La Jornada also reported that local health officials and residents found “clouds of flies” feeding on organic pig waste, carcasses and feces. Reportedly, Carroll Farms has been dumping organic pig waste out in the open, leaving it exposed for the flies to feed.

The swine flu has now been spreading to major cities in Mexico, the US and Canada. In Mexico, over 900 people are dead. Mexico City has begun to close down schools, churches, and libraries. The Mexican government is planning to vaccinate 500,000 people, although it is widely known that there is no vaccine for this latest strain of swine flu because it has not yet been produced.

WHO Fukuda: No Evidence Swine Flu Is Bioterrorism Attack

26 Apr 2009

ZURICH -(Dow Jones)- The World Health Organization said Sunday there is no evidence an outbreak of swine flu in Mexico represents an act of bioterrorism.

"There are no signs we are dealing with purposeful actions," Dr. Keiji Fukuda, the WHO's temporary assistant director-general for Health Security and the Environment, said on a media call.

Fukuda was responding to a question about U.S. President Barack Obama's recent visit to Mexico, where at least 81 people have died from severe pneumonia caused by the flu-like illness in Mexico, according to the WHO.

SPECIAL BULLETIN.

New swine flu feared to be weaponized strain

April 25-26, 2009 -- SPECIAL BULLETIN. New swine flu feared to be weaponized strain

According to two mainstream media journalists, one in Mexico City and the other in Jakarta, who spoke to WMR on background, they are convinced that the current outbreak of a new strain of swine flu in Mexico and some parts of the United States is the result of the introduction of a human-engineered pathogen that could result in a widespread global pandemic, with potentially catastrophic consequences for domestic and international travel and commerce.

The journalists have been told by top officials of the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO) about the grave dangers posed by the new and deadly swine flu strain, known as A-H1N1. The flu, never before seen by scientists, has already killed up to 68 people in Mexico and has forced the cancellation of public events, including sports matches and concerts, and the closure of schools, libraries, and museums. Eight cases have been reported in Texas and California and one Texas family is already under a quarantine. Doctors are examining several students at a Queens high school in New York who displayed symptoms similar to those experienced by swine flu patients in Mexico.

Our Mexico City source said a top scientist for the United Nations, who has examined the outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in Africa, as well as HIV/AIDS victims, concluded that H1N1 possesses certain transmission "vectors" that suggest that new flu strain has been genetically-manufactured as a military biological warfare weapon. The UN expert believes that Ebola, HIV/AIDS, and the current A-H1N1 swine flu virus are biological warfare agents.

Past swine flu outbreaks have been spread from pigs to humans, who then passed the flu on to other humans. However, with A-H1N1, there have been no reported infections of pigs. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), A-H1N1 has gene segments from North American swine, bird and human flu strains and a segment from Eurasian swine flu. Costa Rica, Brazil, and Peru have issued alerts to check all incoming passengers from Mexico at border crossings, airports, and seaports for symptoms of the swine flu.

WHO is convening an emergency session of its top medical experts in Geneva and is set to declare H1N1 a "public health event of international concern." It is reported that WHO will recommend travel restrictions to and from areas where the flu has been reported, including Mexico City and the states of Mexico, Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí and Oaxaca.

Our Jakarta source said WHO officials are afraid that the presence of gene segments from dreaded H5N1 bird flu in the A-H1N1 swine flu strain could mean that the new swine flu strain was engineered to "jump species." WMR has been informed that the CDC and U.S. Army dug up the body of an Inuit woman who died in 1918 in Brevig Mission, Alaska from an outbreak of Spanish flu. The influenza pandemic that year killed up to 100 million people worldwide in an 18-month period. Brevig Mission saw 72 of its 80 residents die within five days, the worst case recorded anywhere in the world. WMR has been told the genetic material recovered by the U.S. government from the corpse of the Inuit woman provided the basis for the development of the H5N1, or bird (avian), flu strain at the U.S. Army Medical Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) laboratory at Fort Detrick, Maryland, the point of origin for the Ames strain of anthrax used in the 2001 bio-war attacks against the U.S. Congress and the media.

The fear in Asia is that if the A-H1N1 pandemic spreads to the United States, travel to and from the country will be all but shut down.

The following are the symptoms associated with A-H1N1:

* cough
* fever
* sore throat
* shortness of breath
* muscle and joint pain

The drugs Tamiflu and Relenza are seen as the most effective against A-H1N1.

No, the kooks pumping out 79 articles a minute.
Where the hell do people even find this stuff. How do you reach kookville?! Does it not kind of paint the portrait of someone who goes out of their way to get to this crap?

I appreciate people being resourceful, but it gets to be a bit much after a while.

You can find anything on the internet. I was listening to Coast to Coast last night driving home from work and they had this lady on the show who had me shaking my head.

If I can remember correctly she was saying she was sexually abused by her father growing up and the gov't found out about it. Gerald Ford, yes, that Gerald Ford, came to her house and agreed to take her from the family for some kind of mind control experiment the CIA was conducting. She stated she was a sex slave for the CIA and they experimented on her until she was rescued later in life. I might add the Gerald Ford wasn't the POTUS yet as this occured in the 60's.

Strange stuff they have on that show. Oh, also how they called Bush 41 "poppy" because of his involvement in the heroin trade while working for the CIA or something.

Yeah, I liked Art Bell. They even have some new guy hosting the show now as well. They sometimes have some interesting topics but a lot of the time it just gets a little too kooky for me.

Well when GHW Bush was the head of the CIA in the 1960s they were certainly hip-deep in the heroin trade between Southeast Asia and the USA. But can't state for sure as to that being the genesis of his being glossed Poppy.

Tell us Loren, how many people do "they" want to die?

and when the final death toll is a tiny fraction of the number you predict, will you admit that maybe you were wrong? or are you saving mankind in the same way you saved the Solar System last year?

post a number, I'll take the under

does anyone know if the answer do this question is found somewhere in the spam?

Loren, you should know by now, there's nothing more important than making an argument with your own words and knowledge base. Nobody pays attention to spam.

that old fashion throw as much bullshit against the wall and see what sticks style only makes your position appear weaker.
