Topspinelite-

I would be SHOCKED if someone here who posts regularly can answer your question. Although, it would be a pleasant surprise if someone did.

Get (buy it or go to the public library) the Sklansky book on NL tourney play and he explains the concept. I don't have the book otherwise I would tell ya.

I'm not big into tourneys despite success at a few. With that said, I've heard the gap concept has something to do with needing a very strong hand to call your chips to a sizable bet compared to betting your chips. If you don't know why it is better to bet your chips than to call them then you probably need to work on your game and go into deep study mode. I could be completely wrong so get the advice from an expert, buy the book, or go to Borders and read that section. Good luck.

theswami- how have things been? I haven't been playing much poker, been concentrating on college basketball and been kicking some ass.

I have this book, here is what it says

"you need a better hand to play against someone who has already opened the betting than you would need to open yourself"

It then gives the example that you would raise KQo in mp in a limit game, but you would fold KQo to an early position raise.

If your opponents are loose then you might not even have a gap.

In tourneys, the gap should be extremely high.

"In a tournament it is often right to open raise with hands far inferior to those with which you would need to call someone else who opened raised."

so pretty much what theswami said

Hey Matt-

Thanks for adding the information from the book.

The "gap" concept seems intuitive to me but I still need to study a bit more. I see holes in my game due to the fact that I like to gamble and thus my EV is not as high as it should be. I'm willing to accept a lower EV for more pure enjoyment rather than the feeling that playing is like a job. Kind of like counting cards in BJ...there is NO fun in that.

Frankly, in many of the games I play I would not raise in mp with KQo since I know that MOST Ax will play even to a raise and I'm probably an underdog. I would rather limp, see the flop cheaply, and jam it if I flop top pair or better. MY guess is that by NOT raising that hand in mp I don't lose much (if anything) in EV.

I haven't been playing (sports or poker) much either in the last month...I have a TON going on so hobbies are pretty much on hold (despite that fact I find time to browse here and occasionally post).

Good luck with the rest of the year.

Did you find a job yet? Are you on track to walk in May?

Nope, havent found a job yet, still awaiting to hear from one company that I had 2 interviews with. Got a couple interviews next week, one with Mutual of Omaha in Indy for a financial advisor position. I may end up in that field to start out who knows.

Matt-

Good luck with the search. I may get some breathing room this weekend so if I'm on my PC I'll give you a shout via AOL IM. Later.
