I read an interesting argument about buying down in anther post, and I feel it's worth commenting on since it's something I often do - and with football season here it's worthy of discussion:

I like to line shop, and I'll often jump on the line that gives me a favorable hook (+3.5 or -2.5) but when I can't get the line I like, I will nearly always buy up to +3 from a +2.5 and I will nearly always buy down to -3 from a -3.5, or I just won't make the play.

At +2.5 and at -3.5, I've lost so many times because I didn't buy the hook, that I just don't want to make the wager if I can't buy off of the hook.
A wager without the hook, especially 3,4,6 & 7, gives the bettor a third option beside win and lose, and that is an opportunity to push - and I would much rather push than lose.
The hook can improve your odds, or it can kill you. My experiance has been, if the hook isn't in your favor, then buy up or down, or don't take the wager.
One final point, I usually buy the 1/2 point to bring a wager to three since that is the most common prime football number. I tend not to buy off of a hook at other numbers (although I will)

How do you treat the hook?

I agree with you. I am very big on buying points. I always buy to +4 from +3.5 and so on. I also feel by buying pts, it also gives me an advantage for the 2nd half bets!! Im sure alot of people won't agree, but thats just my opinion.
