You have got to love Joseph Sullivan, eBay's newset head of legal oversight. So intent on preventing eBay users from malfeasance (which has not been a significant problem at any point in the company's eight years prior to Sullivan's hiring) there is nothing at which he will not stop, including a complete abrogation of users' privacy and in some cases the law itself.
Says Sully:
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>"If you are a law-enforcement officer, all you have to do is send us a fax with a request for information, and ask about the person behind the seller's identity number, and we will provide you with his name, address, sales history and other details--all without having to produce a court order."<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
Got an interest not in an eBay member, but in a PayPal user? No problemo. eBay recently bought PayPal, and according to Fat Joey:
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>"If you contact me I will hook you up with the Paypal people. They will help you get the information you're looking for.... In order to give you details about credit-card transactions, I have to see a court order. I suggest that you get one, if that's what you're looking for." <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
Got your eye on someone, but can't find sufficient evidence to charge them? What is this, America or something? Just call Diamond Joe Sullivan and his boys will work up a handy sting for you:
<BLOCKQUOTE class="ip-ubbcode-quote"><font size="-1">quote:</font><HR>"Tell us what you want to ask the bad guys. We'll send them a form, signed by us, and ask them your questions. We will send their answers directly to your e-mail." <HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
