Bush confronts immigration deal skeptics

<!-- END HEADLINE --><!-- BEGIN STORY BODY -->By BEN FELLER, Associated Press Writer 50 minutes ago

President Bush attacked opponents of an immigration deal Tuesday, suggesting they "don't want to do what's right for America."
"The fundamental question is, will elected officials have the courage necessary to put a comprehensive immigration plan in place," Bush said against a backdrop of a huge American flag.
He described his proposal — which has been agreed to by a bipartisan group of senators — as one that "makes it more likely we can enforce our border — and at the same time uphold the great immigrant tradition of the United States of America."
Bush spoke at the nation's largest training center for law enforcement.
He chose the get-tough setting as conservative critics blast a Senate proposal as being soft on people who break the law. Hoping to blunt that message, Bush emphasized that any new options for immigrants and foreign workers would not start until tougher security is in place.
The presidential stop came during a congressional recess, with senators back home and facing pressure from the left and right on the immigration plan. Bush's aim is to build momentum for the legislation, perhaps his best chance for a signature victory in his second term. The Senate expects to resume debate on it next week.
"A lot of Americans are skeptical about immigration reform, primarily because they don't think the government can fix the problems," Bush said.
"And my answer to the skeptics is: give us a chance to fix the problems in a comprehensive way that enforces our border and treats people with decency and respect. Give us a chance to fix this problem. Don't try to kill this bill before it gets moving," Bush told students and instructors at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.
Bush repeatedly cast the matter as one of political courage.
"Those determined to find fault with this bill will always be able to look at a narrow slice of it and find something they don't like," the president said. "If you want to kill the bill, if you don't want to do what's right for America, you can pick one little aspect out of it.
"You can use it to frighten people," Bush said. "Or you can show leadership and solve this problem once and for all."
The bill would give temporary legal status to millions of unlawful immigrants, provided they came forward, paid a fine and underwent criminal background checks. To apply for a green card, they would have to pay another fine, learn English, return to their home country and wait in line.
The plan also would create a guest worker program. It would allow foreign laborers to come to the U.S. for temporary stints, yet with no guarantee they can eventually gain citizenship.
Both the new visa plan and the temporary worker program are contingent on other steps coming first. Those include fencing and barriers along the Mexico border, the hiring of more Border Patrol agents and the completion of an identification system to verify employees' legal status.
The legislation would also reshape future immigration decisions. A new point system would prioritize skills and education over family in deciding who can immigrate.
Georgia's senators both played leading roles in producing Bush's deal with the Senate. Yet they have also said they may not support the final bill, depending upon how it is amended.
Bush chastised those who say the proposal offers amnesty to illegal immigrants. He called it empty political rhetoric.

This crap should be a bigger worry than "what plane hit the pentagon? Both parties have sold us out. Unfortunately, when it comes election time, the same people will get voted in.

I think it's time to wake up and realize that our government has been hijacked by criminals, and they are doing their BEST to destroy our country. If this bill gets passed, the country is gone, Period.

Hasn't every president since Reagan stated they were going to enforce the law in regards to the illegal crossing of the border? They can't and don't enforce the laws right now. Are we suppossed to believe that now, all of a sudden, the law will be properly enforced? This bill is a joke. Kennedy is a joke. Bush is a joke. He has long since abandoned what the Republicans are suppossed to stand for. He talks like a conservative but he is far from it. Of course, are the Democrats any better? Hell no.

Yep, and they're not being enforced because law enforcement chooses to not enforce these laws. If employers know where to find illegals, it should be easy for law enforcement to find them. There are some jurisdictions that will not even accertain whether or not a person is here illegally after they've been arrested for crimes. It's unbelievable. And if you knew how anti-Amercian these hard-working, family-orientated, Catholic Mexicans really are, the situation would be even more alarming. Many of these would be new Americans HATE the U.S. They just want what we have. Take a look at the recent treatment of Miss U.S.A. in the recent Miss Universe Pagent held in Mexico if you'd like a taste of the mainstream anti-Americanism harbored by our peaceful little neighbor.

TFAN laments: Hasn't every president since Reagan stated they were going to enforce the law in regards to the illegal crossing of the border?

SH: Pretty much.

The same men all pledged to "end the scourge of illegal drug dealers", with Reagan and Bush actively promoting the notion that they could make America "drug free". (Neither Clinton nor GW were silly enough to make that latter pitch.)

Both promises - "stopping illegal immigration" and "stopping illegal drug dealing" are simply silly political posturing which preys on the ignorance of the public.

The public accurately perceives the problem - illegal immigration/illegal drug dealing - but is foolish to then believe that any public entity can effectively stop either.

TFAN: They can't and don't enforce the laws right now.

SH: Nonsense. They can and they do enforce the immigration laws right now. As you and I type our exchange of posts here, hundreds of illegal immigrants are being arrested and/or being deported. And at the same time, there's likely hundreds more who are being obstructed from entry due to enforcement of the laws by hard working men and women all along the massive southern border of the USA.

However, while all this is going on, a couple thousand more people get by the well-intended enforcement measures because it's really not that hard given the literally millions of people who pass through U.S. border checkpoints every 24 hours.

The immigration laws are absolutely enforced - to the best ability we can given the resources we have and versus the relentless flow of traffic across the southern border.

However, they cannot be "effectively" enforced (read - no illegals succeed in getting in) because we're quite simply outmanned.
