If the players wore football helmets for this Big East confrontation, they would be trading paint. The guard play alone in this battle is worth watching. Pittsburgh’s Sam Wannamaker is terrific point guard and Ashton Gibbs can score from anywhere. This twosome is backed by Travon Woodall who can dish the rock or fill the scorebook. The Pitt guards and the rest of the players will have to pay particular attention to the transition game and not be caught up the floor against Georgetown. The best way to contain the Hoyas is own the glass, usually a Pittsburgh specialty. The Panthers (15-1, 4-7 ATS) are 12-4 ATS when playing only their second game in eight days and 8-1 OVER after three consecutive games as favorite.
It is widely accepted that college basketball is a guard’s game, which was why the Hoyas had such an edge early in the season. Georgetown (12-4, 9-6 ATS) has three exceptional scoring options in Austin Freeman, Jason Clark and Chris Wright. What made this trio almost impossible to stop is they work in harmony to find open shots for one another and collectively they are all deadly accurate, until recently. After being highly nationally in field goal percentage shooting and three-point field goal percentage, Georgetown has suffered since the beginning of conference play. Leading scorer Freeman is being singled out for his poor three-point shooting (11 of 35 since December), however what is wrong with G-Town is Chris Wright. The senior point guard is 12 for 43 in Big East action and teams are sagging off him and guarding others more tightly, which is the real cause of lack of point production for the Hoyas who are 4-14 ATS after scoring 60 points or less.
The favorite is 7-4 with four covers in past 11 meetings, with Pitt 7-3 ATS as visitor.
