Among those ‘bad apples’ were Rafa van der Vaart, Dirk Kuyt, Johnny Heitinga and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
A huge public backlash followed and, after careful consideration, Van Marwijk decided he had no choice but to call it a day.

Dutch football federation president Bert van Oostveen had said: “I am very disappointed. This is unworthy of a Dutch team.
“I accept that Bert van Marwijk took us to the World Cup final two years earlier but this tournament was unacceptable.
“That is why we are going to have a thorough evaluation very quickly.”
