It's a season-ending and potentially career-threatening injury depending on Williams' recovery process. The good news is that Williams is still just 21 years old, and the injury is occurring now as opposed to November. He'll have a better chance to be healthy by the start of 2012 training camp. The bad news is that Williams will need major knee surgery and his rookie season in the NFL will be a washout. Beanie Wells will dominate carries in Arizona this year.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Wells' big-play ability is still lacking, though he flashed it on a 20-yard screen pass play that was called back due to penalty. Beanie is up to 66 yards on 17 preseason carries, resulting in a 3.88 yards-per-carry clip. The Ryan Williams injury, if serious, could ensure Wells of a workhorse role. The Cards won't find a No. 2 back approaching Williams' caliber at final cuts.

Williams will undergo season-ending surgery early next week. While he has youth and time on his side, there's a chance Williams will never take the field at the NFL level again. Though the Cards plan to add a backup running back before Week 1, Beanie Wells projects to be a bell cow in Williams' absence.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Disconcerting news with just one practice left this week. Much of Wells' explosiveness was sapped by a knee injury last season, and he's not a player who can be expected to excel at less than 100 percent. If you're an owner, you'd be well served to scoop up Chester Taylor in case Wells can't give it a go on Sunday against the Seahawks. What he does in practice on Friday should go a long way toward determining his status.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>When asked if he'd be at full speed for the game, Wells responded, "Yeah, definitely." Wells was limited in practice Friday after feeling tightness in his hamstring in Thursday's practice, but all indications are that Arizona was just being careful with their lead back. Despite the good news on the health front, Beanie remains a risky RB2 play against a solid Seattle run defense.

Look for Chester Taylor and La'Rod Stephens-Howling to do most of the ball carrying, though the Cardinals might just attack Seattle with the pass. Wells will try to come back next week against the Giants.

The Cardinals' plan is to increase Wells' practice reps each day this week. We'll know much more about Wells' chances of playing by Friday.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>HC Ken Whisenhunt confirmed Monday that Wells came out of his Sunday trampling of the Giants without any further hamstring issues, so his limited work today is not a concern. He should return to full practice on either Thursday or Friday, and will be a borderline RB1 against the Vikings this weekend.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Wells most likely won't play against the Ravens, leaving the Arizona backfield to be handled by a three-way committee of Alfonso Smith, Chester Taylor, and La'Rod Stephens-Howling. It's a situation to avoid in fantasy leagues with the Ravens defense on the slate. Wells may return for Week 9 versus St. Louis.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>"I'm going with what I know and what the team knows at this point," said LaCanfora. "It's at least a one-week injury and quite possibly two weeks. It's great that he wants to play, but ... where he is medically as we get closer to Sunday, he's very, very doubtful." Wells has been far more optimistic than the coaching staff in the past, so this comes as little surprise. Check back Friday afternoon for an update on his status. In the the meantime, we'd take him out of fantasy lineups.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Wells appeared to be running on fumes in Sunday's win over the Rams, but the fact that he practiced today is a pretty good indication he'll be active against the Eagles' bottom-ten run defense. Wells can no longer be considered an every-week RB2 until he gets healthier, which is not something he's likely to do without rest.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt confirmed that Wednesday's absence was simply a maintenance day to get the swelling down. Beanie is just a borderline RB2 option this week against a shutdown Niners defense that hasn't allowed a rushing touchdown or 100-yard game all season.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Wells doesn't play on consecutive possessions much because the Cardinals have scaled back his snaps. When the Cards go to a shotgun formation, La'Rod Stephens-Howling and Chester Taylor are the tailbacks. Wells finished Week 11 with just eight carries and no receptions, although that was largely attributable to game flow. Expect him to get far more attempts at St. Louis in Week 12.
