"B.C. will likely remain under strict pandemic-related restrictions until at least the summer, the province’s top health officials said Tuesday.

...
then we need to start preparing ourselves for the potential of a second wave in the fall,” she said.

The virus will remain a risk until either a vaccine is developed, she added, or enough people get sick for there to be broad immunity in the community.

Experts have say a vaccine is up to 18 months away.

“I don’t believe we will have all of these restrictions for that period of time. What I do know is this is a critical part of our first wave,” said Henry.

She said the severity of that wave and how it affected public health measures would depend on how well people complied with the current restrictions such as staying home, avoiding gatherings and remaining two metres apart.

Health Minister Adrian Dix said the chance of public health orders being lifted before the end of May or early weeks of June was “little to none.”

Henry said once this current epidemic wave had passed, the province can begin to think about ways to reduce restrictions and move back to focusing on containing individual imported cases and outbreak clusters of the virus.

...
The total number of B.C. cases is unknown, as some symptomatic people have been told to assume they have the virus and self-isolate.

...
B.C. has faced its own shortage of protective gear, with the province looking at ways to reduce usage, and even re-use some items.

On Monday, Health Minister Adrian Dix said the province had received a shipment of one million masks, but continued to face stiff international competition as it looked to source more gear.

Canada’s deputy chief public health officer, Dr. Howard Njoo, told reporters that Canadians will be in it “for the long haul.”
But again, he shied away from mentioning any specific dates.

“It’s not going to be days and weeks, it’s definitely months, many months. And the one thing that other countries are also looking at, and we’re looking at as well, is that is there a possibility of a second wave? Who knows?” Njoo said. ‘We’re looking at all possibilities and planning for all potential scenarios.”

Toronto Mayor John Tory made the announcement during an update on the city’s response to COVID-19 Tuesday afternoon.

“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Toronto is cancelling all city-led major events, festivals, conferences, and cultural programs and is also cancelling all city permits for major events organized by external groups,” Tory said.

1-3% of the population has contracted the virus depending on your country in 2 months

Death rate is 3.4%

80% of the deaths are people who are over 60 and 75% of those have underlying Cardio Vascular diseases or Diabetes

Initially the concern was urban center hospitals would be over run with patients with advanced stages of disease and Hypochondriacs flooding emergency wards with a I think I got it!

But now that we are a good month in the focus should be on setting up separate facilities to host people with advanced stages of the diseases .
People continue to practicing good hygiene.

But let the rest of us get back to living our lives, I think long term measures of social distancing and closing businesses will only lead Depression Poverty and increased crime rates which will lead to greater deaths and civil unrest.

The virus will remain a risk until either a vaccine is developed, ( waiting 18 MONTHS is too LONG ) she added, or enough people get sick for there to be broad immunity in the community. ( This is the answer).

I understand the Virus is nasty when you have it but at some point I think Darwinism has to be viewed as the answer & the people who are at high risk of contracting or dying are the ones who should self isolate.

Doesnt really protect them though does it? If everyone under 60 goes out and goes back to work....you don’t think it would be more likely for those older people to get it over that time compared to a quarantine for everybody? The biggest thing is understanding the virus. If we spread it amongst each other, it will only heighten the chance of older people who are quarantining to actually get it. Through shopping at the grocery, through visitors who don’t think they are sick, through going on a walk and thousands of people are out.

"RCMP charge 4 people in N.S. for not self-isolating, not physically distancing

All four individuals were fined $697.50

...Two people were charged with failing to self-isolate after returning from out of the country. Two others were charged for failing to maintain a physical distance of two metres.

...Cpl. Lisa Croteau, spokesperson for Halifax District RCMP, said the two people charged with failing to physically distance were out together. She said someone called police to report it.

"There were people in close proximity to each other that were not supposed to be," Croteau said.

Croteau said people not from the same household who are meeting up to go for a walk or visit someone else's home could be charged if they are not two metres apart.

"B.C.'s top doctor considers recommending face masks":

https://bc.ctvnews.ca/b-c-s-top-doctor-considers-recommending-face-masks-1.4878725

"B.C. health officer says homemade masks may prevent spread of COVID-19 to others":

"Dr. Bonnie Henry said Wednesday the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control is moving towards supporting more extensive use of masks by people during the pandemic.

A study by researchers in Singapore estimates that about 10 per cent of new infections may be sparked by people who carry the virus but have not yet suffered its flu-like symptoms. That then prompted American health officials to change how it defined the risk of infection.

...Canadian public health officials, including Henry, have previously said people who are feeling well do not need to wear masks in public.

"Top doctor ‘not against’ widespread mask use...

B.C.’s provincial health officer said Wednesday that she is “not against” the widespread use of non-medical masks as the world grapples with the novel coronavirus pandemic.

...There is growing evidence that people may be able to spread the virus before realizing they have symptoms.

...“[They] may reduce in some cases the touching of your face … we also know they can have some benefit about keeping your droplets in.”
