what kind of company are you starting up?

GH, not to toot the horn too loud, but I'm pretty good in sales and marketing, even though my sheepskin says "Bachelor of Engineering, Chemical Engineering." Actually will be a holding company, one of the arms is gonna be a new food outfit. Two of my previous large clients were Tyson Foods and Campbell Soup, so I have considerable experience there. Another arm will be a think tank, again, marketing the focus. I can sell a dead man life insurance, I made Dupont millions with my skills, that's why I left them to start my own gig, got tired of making someone else millions while I got peanuts. Was fortunate, while in OK, to have bought into some oil properties that hit, so I have "annuities," if you will. But guys above are right, if you're Type A like I am, retirement is the last thing you need, it'll kill ya before you realize it. None of my friends were in a position to hang it up, so I end up making best friends with Mr. Macallan, damn near killed me. Sorry for the OT men, just sharing a few words that might benefit someone out there.

I am 76 yrs of age, I retired Dec 07 [ to take care of my wife who was 14 yrs younger than I but had some health issues]after spending over 40yrs in the auto business , but worked using my p/c from home as a buyer for a pre-owned car dealer, . I lost my wife in a tragic house fire in june 2011, I then went back to work at the car lot as a buyer/seller & consultant in jan 2012 working 1-5 pm mon-fri coming & going as I please, along with renting out a townhouse that gives me an additional rental income of $2500 a month. I eat a lot of salads, fish & chicken & a steak or prime rib about every 10 days or so . People say I look like I am in my 50's as I stand 6ft tall & weigh 185-190lbs with no gut or turkey neck, I wear stylish clothes along with keeping a good tan & being well groomed, I just purchased myself a new 2014 Cadillac, after grieving for about 2 yrs or so I decided that you only have one life & to enjoy it,so I started going go out every fri & sat nights from about 8pm to about 3am, dancing, drinking some Bud Lite's & dating/chasing women, hell I date women in their late 40's & 50's, they say if you don't use you may lose it, no blue pill yet.

sdf, don't even think about it. If you're doing something that in the morning, you wake up and say to yourself, I can't wait to get there, then NEVER give that up. Unfortunately, I did at 46, and I regret it every morning. I work out every morning, played tennis before this country had a clue (in the 60's), gamble because it gives ya something to do, and there is nothing that satisfies me more than working in the yard. Looking at buying a nice condo though, and the yardwork will be nada, so have held off thinking that might put a nail in my coffin. The travel thing, that's nice, but I've lived on four continents, been to I can't remember how many countries, I'm looking forward to just traveling in North Carolina. But if you're happy with the work you're doing now, don't give it up, there is nothing better in life than waking up and feeling like you can't wait to get to and after it, NOTHING!

I retired from business at 45 (after 20 yrs in the Grocery and Bar business) and now I'm 57. Some say I was retired out of college lol. With an always uncanny ability to win at cards, horse racing, and sports betting people never thought I worked anyways lol. I was blessed with the greatest teachers in the world from my college days working at the Stardust( where the line originated) to having a father and uncle that never lost (lucky me). As long as the Star Spangled Banner plays everyday, I'm all good. As long as the Packers are -4 vs the Eagles, Wisconsin is -15 vs UWGreen Bay in CBB and Gonzaga is only laying -21 to St Joe's in CBB(that was the best one) I'm all good :).....I still have a 2yr old at home so you can never tell what I'll do next

Yours in Winners

*****to my brother-in-laws that visit this site Duke will not play for Michigan State he will play where his Dad and cousins played and hopefully he'll win two Rose Bowls as well :)

Hell, every one of your posts is in a foreign language. I'd assume you're a coonass, but you know what "assuming" implies, lol.

Well, since I started the thread, I can retire at 44 but not sure if I want to do that yet.

Want to open my on business after I retire for the first time :).

almost 45, wife 48 and no kids. We both have very lucrative jobs with pensions. I plan to get out of my sales position at 55, as I need 20+ years and to be 55 to qualify for the pension and lifetime insurance. This has been a huge conversation around our house between us and our financial advisor for the past month. However, I know I could never quit working / selling all together, or I think I would:

1) die of being bored, or
2) drink, gamble and golf myself to death

tough question Enfuego -- one I think about often. Funny think is there's no bashing in this thread! LMAO!!!!

I always assumed I'd golf myself to death, I'm a two cap, could have played pro if I'd wanted to, had a couple of friends I played against in high school that did and am sure I made the right decision. The thing is, if you hang it up early, are the rest of your gang in that position? Because if they're not, you got nobody to hang with, and then the drinking and gambling take over. Being retired by yourself is not pretty, I know firsthand. GL

Some interesting reading here. Good info...and some funny comments.

I'm 44. I've had a varying career in government work (local, military, and federal). I just retired from the fire service (18+ years, retired as a Lieutenant, and will collect over $40K/year w/ a 3% COLA)....I just passed 19 years of military service (8+years active duty, the rest as a reservist). I can collect my Reserve pension at 54 and I'm currently an O4 (not sure if I'll make O5 w/ the budget cuts). I'll probably stay in another 6 years, so I should collect around $30-33K/year (in today's dollars) from the Reserves. I just started my federal career about 5 months ago as a GS14. I'm buying 8 years of military time, so if I do 12 years I can retire w 20 years at just under 56 years old. That pension will be around $28K if I only do 20 years....and stay at GS14 (I hope to be a GS15, but I'd rather do something I like and be happy than chase the promotion). So, I can retire at 56 w/ 3 pensions totalling around $90-100K (if I did my math right). I don't have a fat 401K because I've always known I'd have more than 1 pension...but I have over $100K in there now, and the federal job matches 5%, so I'm putting into the TSP (401K). Hopefully that account will be at least $200K eventually. I also own my house (over $125K in equity), a condo in Florida (over $75K in equity), and a vacation home/cabin that I own outright (worth around $160K). So, if I retire and sell everything I'm in pretty good shape for paying cash for a retirement place.

I agree that I'd want something to do (work wise). I don't play golf, fish, or hunt. I don't play video games or have card nights w/ the guys. My main hobby is running/racing. I run a lot of miles (around 40-60 miles per week)...and have a goal of running a marathon in all 50 states. I've only done 11 states...so I have a lot of traveling/running to do. Other than that I think I'd do home improvement stuff. I built my vacation cabin w/ my cousin. I figure I could do some real estate reno/flipping.

Good for you Sparticus. I remember when your wife passed. Glad you're doing well.

Weather is absolutely perfect in North Carolina today, and will continue for the next several days. Neither of these teams would be going to the prom if their date was named Defense. There will be scoring at will, only guns and knives can prevent either team from finding the endzone. I'm hammerin the dogpiss out of the over here, want free money, get in the car. GL

Couldn't believe how many times they fumbled inside the redzone. Plus Duke had to go for 2 and missed it.

You know I'll do it. In the old days when Wagerline was around, used to banter with a couple of guys there, took them out to Vegas for the Superbowl one time and March Madness another. We had a great time. Nothing beats getting together with men that like to gamble, drink and have a good time. I'll send you a note when the time comes.
