With an unproven rookie, Ronnie Brown and the question mark’s still surrounding Ricky Williams’ comeback, the Miami Dolphins may become more of a passing oriented team. The Dolphins have some decent NFL receivers in Chris Chambers, Marty Booker, and Randy McMichael, and the offensive line should improve with an extra year under their belts and the acquisition of RT Stockar McDougle via free agency from the Lions. Quarterback A.J. Feeley does have a nice arm when given time in the pocket, so this should at least be a more interesting Dolphins team to watch, even if the results aren’t better right away.
The Buffalo Bills are still demanding a third round pick in return for any team interested in receiving disgruntled running back Travis Henry in a trade. But, with current starter Willis McGahee’s surgically repaired left knee still a concern, Buffalo remains wary of trading such a proven NFL commodity as Henry. Unproven second-year man Shaud Williams would become number two on the depth chart if Henry is dealt, and management doesn’t want to end up with egg on their face if McGahee is injured again. The Jacksonville Jaguars and Tennessee Titans remain the top suitors for Henry’s services.
The Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets have officially entered the Ty Law sweepstakes. The Chiefs have become very serious in their pursuit of Law after learning of CB Eric Warfield’s four game suspension for violating the NFL substance abuse policy. The Chiefs will bring Law in for a strenuous workout once he has doctor’s clearance. If signed, he could very well start immediately opposite Patrick Surtain. On the Jets side, they’ve entered negotiations after the retirement of corner Donnie Abraham. Earlier this week the New York Jets dealt a conditional draft pick to the Dallas Cowboys for cornerback Pete Hunter, but this is basically for depth, as the team doesn’t envision Hunter as the shut down NFL corner they would like. Law’s asking price could be too steep for the Jets, though. Right now, Jacksonville and Detroit look like the two frontrunners in this race.
New offensive coordinator Jim Fasel is stressing speed with the revamped Baltimore Ravens offense with the arrival of WR Derrick Mason and the team drafting Oklahoma standout Mark Clayton with the top pick in the NFL Draft. The team hopes to be finalizing a deal with Clayton in the next week or two, so he’ll be in camp when the team reports on July 31. Look for the Ravens to take advantage of Clayton’s talents by having him line up all over the field, which will be a headache for opposing defenses. But, the most impressive receiver early on in off-season mini camps has been forth year man Randy Hynes. Coaches have been very impressed with his swagger and confidence. Assuming Jamal Lewis’ legal problems are behind him, and his ankle is healed, he can dominate a game as proven in his 2,066 yard rushing season in 2003. Also, now that quarterback Kyle Boller has weapons around him, the burden is on him to step up and become a top tier NFL quarterback. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is this year’s Drew Brees.
