UTSA had the ball around their own 30 with under 20 secs left on the clock, QB completes about a 8 yd pass and the receiver tries to lateral but a defender picked up the ball and took it to the house. The lateral was a forward pass however, so UTSA backers avoided disaster.
I rewatched the play twice...the receiver caught the ball and tried to lateral(even though it was forward), how is that not a Fumble?
even Tim Brando said it was a fumble on TV and that "it matters to some people if the TD counts"

Can the ball be recovered by an illegal forward pass beyond the line of scrimmage? If the QB crosses the LOS and passes a ball that hits the ground, the defense can't pick the ball up as a live ball. I know this is slightly different, but the receiver showed clear intent to pass the ball to another player, it was not a fumble.
