if they have applied and proven themselves, why not? importing talent from other countries is what the US is known for.

i have no remorse for people who feel 'entitled' to things. at the end of the day, the world will go on without you. shut up, put down your head, and get your fucking shit done.

I agree but if everyone was here legally or through a work visa then it wouldn't be an issue. Just have everyone be legal and on the same footing and then it is more of a true meritocracy.

I think we agree on that. But it will be seen as amnesty and it will never get done.

Why? Most Americans support a pathway to citizenship that includes English immersion and some basic civics testing, multi-year waiting period etc

Even Trump doesn't really even talk about his genius masterplan to deport 15 million people anymore.

As automation gets better and better in the fields that Mexican immigrants tend to be concentrated in, having large swaths of people here to do nothing just isn't good policy to me. Why I think the government needs to manage data to meet whatever supply is needed but not go over that amount.

We're not even sure how much labor will be needed in the future, so some population management is needed. Although it is tough to talk about population control without sounding like a crypto-fascist. Many newer industries just don't require as much man-power.

Why not? Because they aren't citizens of our country and should not be entitled to benefits members born here are entitled to receive. For example:

Student A is an illegal immigrant and goes to the University of California and receives in state tuition at 25K a year.

Student B is a legal resident of the US and is from Phoenix, Arizona but wants to go to Cal as they have the program he wants but out of state tuition for him is 40K a year.

Why should an illegal immigrant receive the benefit of paying a lower tuition rate than a naturalized US citizen?

illegal immigrants are more likely to come from a socioeconomic disadvantage. what benefit do you gain from raising tuition to a price you know that they cannot pay?

this is like asking why we don't tax poor people more since a they make up a larger portion of the population and thus use the most resources provided by the govt
they can't afford it.

Med school should be heavily subsidized. It wouldn't even cost much money as there aren't that many people going to med school. The fact people have to go a quarter mill in debt obviously discourages a lot of people from going into that field. The increase in competition and doctors would save much more $ in healthcare costs than it would cost to make medical school cheaper.

And it isn't like this would lead to people going to medical school who shouldn't be either, the admission process could still be highly rigorous. So the market really wouldn't be altered.

oh boy.....SUBSIDIZE !!!......:)

With a growing, aging population, the demand for physicians has intensified, and communities around the country are already experiencing doctor shortages. A 2016 study conducted for the AAMC by IHS Inc., predicts that by the year 2025 the United States will face a shortage of between 61,700-94,700 physicians. There will be shortages in both primary and specialty care, and specialty shortages will be particularly large.
These shortages pose a real risk to patients. Because it takes between five and 10 years to train a doctor, projected shortages in 2025 need to be addressed now so that patients will have access to the care they need

.......

Anyone else think doctors should skip the 4 year degree and go straight to Med school? Just seems like a waste of time and money to me.

Atleast you called me a gentleman, I'll take that.

Subsidizing med school would have a huge ROI to society with the costs saved from not having a primary care physician shortage.

We spend like 2.5T a year on healthcare costs, think I read it would only be a few billion and this would relieve the burden for young doctors.

I'm not liking this tension either Ric, you're 1 of my favorite posters. Relax.

that would be a paradigm shift. Not the norm in N America. Until then, we r in trouble. We need brilliant kids who can be FINANCED. Until then we seek help. Could you finance your child's medical education ( $400,000 min ) ?... see what's happening?

There's just so many other fields you can go into these days that don't take nearly the effort and passion that medicine does but pay pretty well. Power balance is way out of whack. You gotta be really motivated and love medicine to want to go through 10 years and a half million of loans to become a doctor. Especially when any decent coder/programmer can make decent $ for 1/10th the commitment.

Since the shortage is in primary care, maybe the alleviating of debt would come for those that go into that field. It just seems crazy because we're only talking like 30-40k people a year and a few billion dollars here. Microscopic compared to overall healthcare costs in the US.

My guess is we will just import more from India/Pakistan. As long as Trump doesn't want to know their religion beforehand.

I'm not the guy to talk to about N American health care.Anger in me . Sadly, too much . Not good. I CAN'T get over health care's horrific recomendations--low -fat diet craz post 1970's. The rulebook was set and it was so wrong. Many people blaming themselves, yet the 'playbook' was wrong. They should be sued , AND, yet..... they won't even apologize. They, have changed their guidelines. Ya see, in my job if i fuck up i can be sued. These fucks failed millions , they r pardoned.....

careful becoming USA city-dense . That's Canada. If you have a probelm we can treat you, elite care--GOTTA come to XYZ tho (central). From what i'm hearing USA top care is second to none. After that, tho, its a crap shoot-- 'inefficient' ...?
