Oops, Belmont at the Big A. It's early, but I'm assuming they are on the grass. Lots of 2 year-old races today - fun, fun.
Race 1 - #4 Carmen's Candy Jar (7-2) We have a 1-2 favorite in the opener, a five-horse stakes for 2 year-olds. The favorite (#1) looks head and shoulders above the rest in here, but is making first start against winners and Irad/Pletcher have a filly making her third consecutive stakes start. I'm going to make her a single in my pick five.
Race 2 - #3 Sedona (2-1) Flavian jumps off the #5 to land here on this $2 million filly who has underwhelmed thus far in her brief racing career. I like that she's shortened up to the one-turn mile as she broke her maiden going 7f at GP.
Race 3 - #6 Buttah (15-1) I'm torn between two longshots here, the #6 & #7. Landing on the 6 due to Sciacca's gawdy ROI in listed stakes races. He always has them ready and this one was visually impressive winning his maiden in Saratoga.
Race 4 - #6 Kilkerran (20-1) First time Lasix, first chance at a fast surface, and a bullet work 11 days ago. Could definitely surprise.
Race 5- #1 Wish List (3-1) Almost fell at the break in last try and still managed to get up for third within a length of the winner under Saez. Now gets the upgrade to Prat.
Race 6 - #3 Jack and Jim (5-1) Franco's current cold streak scares me, but I'm going to take a chance on this one given the pedigree. I look at the rest of the field and see nothing that gets me excited so I may as well go with the first-timer.
Race 7 - #8 Bold Fortune (6-1) Took some money in debut at Saratoga but ran out of gas in the stretch. Perhaps he can move forward off that one. Dam's only other starter won as a 2 year-old.
Race 8 - #3 Off Ramp (6-1) You just have to love when a $2,500 auction purchase wins $275k in purse money. The Kentucky invader bounced a little in second try for the Joe Sharp barn (cost me a couple of bucks) but fits here to make amends.
Race 9 -#5 Bunny Honey (10-1) Irad was on her when she broke her maiden and he stays to the finale to ride her again today. I don't think we'll get near 10-1, but anything over 4-1 is value in my eyes.
