Both really.

Tell me it wouldn't be a blast!

Sure, it would be a blast, but I'd also consider it kind of a dangerous thing to do.

Plenty of guys crash these small planes and die:

Thurman Munson
JFK,Jr.
Cory Lidle

many more

I'd consider it myself, if I had tons of money, I don't fear death. I do realize it is dangerous, much like driving a race car involves danger.

I don't consider this to be a great way ( cost-wise) to get somewhere 300-500 miles away, but surely a cool way ! You'd still need a rental car, wherever you land ?

A plane is a luxury item, like a boat.

I'm happy for you, if you can pull it off. I say "Go for it" ! I would ! It would be cool as SHIT to fly ( your own plane) from New Haven ( CT) to visit friends in S. Carolina ( Hilton Head area)

I just don't think it is practical, but if you are a millionaire a couple of times over, it's feasible.

I'd probably even try to fly a small plane with minimal training, or drive a rig, etc. However, I'm a "Wild and Crazy guy". :ohno:

Those crashes came from inexperience. There are plenty who rented a car and died on their way some much less than 300 miles.

I figure, shit happens, life is short. If I die flying, so be it.

Now, commercial flights scare the hell out of me, I HATE flying. I have a trip to Vegas coming up and I dread the flight. If I was flying, at least I have some what control of it.

Dangers and risk is my life. The rewards out weigh the risk in my opinion.

So many never do things cause of fear, but fear is where it's at baby!:cripwalk:

You ain't a pilot, man !

Those Commercial jet pilots are top-shelf pilots. They are well-trained, rarely crash.

You'd be a rookie pilot with a prop plane, ain't the same thing, man !

Commercial jets rarely crash, wannabe prop plane pilots crash every day.

What's money have to do with getting a pilots license and a plane? I have been looking and it's not too expensive.

Now, storing the plan and maintaining the up keep is a different story.

hope all is well
Dude, nobody on here owns a plane. Rich people own planes, not sportsbettors.

I never thought it would happen...a thread that captivates the audience more than Doug's legendary 'What Makes a Ferret a mammal?' thread.

A new bar has been set.

Basic license is not bad - $5k is about a right estimate.

HOWEVER, that's a VFR license, which basically means you can only fly during the day in clear weather, etc. The V stands for visual.

The next license is the IFR - I is for Instrument. Thats where you can fly a plane using only instrumentation. That training and test is MUCH harder and costs more because not only is it more hours, but it's a whole different class of plane that you have to rent.

IMO, the VFR is nearly useless unless you just do ocassional puddle jump flights. You have to get the IFR to be able to do any real flying.

The company i used to work for owned a percentage of a plane. From what I understand it was like a time share type deal. Anyway I was good friends with one of the top guys and we got to take some "not so much business" trips.

It was awsome. you drive right up get out of the car get on and take off all within like 15 minutes. Stocked bar and everthing. Very cool.

Rent, drive a 2001 car, own three pairs of shoes, and have no more than $10 worth of food in my fridge and cupboards............if that's "rich", I would hate to see "poor"

I'll stick with Illini's position.... no plane owners here. And I"d be amazed if there are more than a couple that could afford even a small prop plane. And if they could the upkeep will wear your ass out. It's as bad as owning a large boat.

You're just frugal, not poor. Didn't you just recently take a 6 figure stock position on J&J ( discussed at SBR) ?

I'd say Cool as Shit, but also probably 100X more likely to crash than a commercial jet flight, not that , that would keep me off of "da plane,Boss !"

It wouldn't shock me if somebody here has a pilots's license, maybe even a prop plane of their own, a jet would be impressive.

I just think any doctor, lawyer, etc. here that does own a plane... is likely not a skilled pilot.... more likely a guy that flies ( as pilot) 20 times a year... sort of a Cory Lidle type... these guys will kill you, they don't know what they're doing.

Bigbet needs a few hundred flights before you could consider him somewhat safe, that's like 10 years of flying, at my estimate of 20 flights a year.

I don't want to fly with a guy that is doing well selling wedding cakes, and perhaps has become a multi-millionaire doing it, he'd be like a ballplayer-pilot.Give me a guy behind the controls that can also fly a jet or a helicoptor, or at least has significant time ( thousands of hours) flying a prop plane.

You have to start somewhere, of course !

I can barely drive a car with my wife in the passenger seat, she is so distracting. I'm like 10X more likely to get into an accident ( hasn't happened, yet) if she is riding shotgun.

I don't even want to think about piloting a plane with her as passenger.... I'd crash for sure.

YES

...........$25,000 of it was placed with my own cash and the other $75,000 was purchased on "margin"...........

For those that do not know, if you buy and sell a stock in the same day, no margin interest is charged.

If you keep the stock a few days, the interest you pay is very little considering that the majority of the time the interest is under 7.5%......which amounts to about $15 a day on a margin loan of $75,000.

owned a cessna 172 and sold it bought a cardinal RG...sold it...maintenance costs are killers as well as hangaring it..the BEST bet right now that gas is coming back down, would be be to buy 1/4 or 1/5 share of a Cessna 172 to learn in. Can always find an instructor very cheap as they get to log the time teaching you. A cessna 172 will hold 4 non-fat people, so when you get your license you'l be able to go places...not the fastest thing out there, but for simply recreation, 1/4 or 1/5 share isn't too bad...and it burns about 10 gallons an hour so it's cheap to fly...

Nice

By the way, it would be crazy to think that nobody owns a plane here.

Heck, I know many here that own RV's, some which cost more than a modest valued plane.

In fact, I know a couple people on this forum personally that have planes, one being a relative of mine.
