true story here. i ref some youth hoops leagues. i do a tourney game a few weeks ago. the losing team decided to play football instead of basketball and fouled all the time - even donw 20 with 1 minute to go. i kept calling intentional fouls - hoping to put an end to this - but it never happened.

when the game ended - i took the scoresheet to the tourney administrator. i come back to the court for the next game. some big fat ugly hippo walks by me and says to me, "i just want you to know you suck." w/o thinking - i replied, "and you swallow." about 1 minute later - her hubby comes running after me - seeking blood!

he DEMANDS i apologize to his wife. - who is standing next to him. i say i will if she aplogizes to me first. she says she won't - so i say i won't and add the way she looks - i'm sure that's not the first time she has even been insulted. the guy now wants to go outside and fight me.

eventually he leaves when i ask him if he owns a house - and he says he does - and i tell him if he hits me his house will soon be mine!

i died laughing at these 2.

That is a funny story. I kind of have some sympathy for the guy though. I mean what was he supposed to do? Can you imagine how miserable his bitchy wife would make his life if he had refused to go over and defend her honour? I have the most sympathy for you, however. Refs take so much undeserved crap it's unbelievable. Most refs either volunteer or get paid very little, and just do it out of love for a sport - and it's a thankless job. winkyduck I salute you and all youth league referees across this great nation

Oh, I do have a saying that I've always thought was kind of funny. Let's say you see a girl who looks pretty good and so you elbow your buddy and say, "Hey check her out." Your buddy responds, "Yeah, but she's a little Crisco." You say, "Crisco? WTF is that supposed to mean?". He replies, "Fat in the can . . . "

for the record - i do NOT ref for free - and if truth be told - get paid rather well. in a few weeks most sunday's i will leave home about 8A (PST) and get home about 6-7P (PST) because i am reffing games. yes - that means i miss a lot (if not all) of the NFL action - but for what i get paid to ref - why not. i do about 6-8 games per sunday.

i got my mba a few years ago - and used reffing to pay for it. i now use the money to make my monthly car payments - until feb. 2005 when reffing will have paid for my car.

reffing is what i use to fund my roth ira every year, too.

so while many refs do it for free - or low pay - not this one.

as for the guy at the game - damn right he had to stick up for his "butt f**k ugly" wife. if not - he'd never "get any" from her - although as fat and ugly as she is - that might not be so bad.

when i umpire softball games, sometimes a team will be getting killed - and inevitably - someone from the losing team will yell out, "hey ump - you're pathetic" to which i will reply, "maybe so - but looking at the score of the game - i've got a lot of company."

I take it all back . . . still, it's a hard way to make money. I use to ref soccer. Dear Lord. I will never do it again. Not just because of the abuse, but also because I deserved much of the abuse and thought everyone would be better off if I just stuck to the sidelines.
