[UPDATED] An Outbreak Of Smart Cars Is Discovered In Harlem

Blogger Harlem Fur recently came out of retirement to note one in his neighborhood. The story drew interest from blogs such as Uptown Flavor, Curbed, and myself.

Tuesday brought another fellow Internet savvy resident of Harlem, Miss Maura Mae into the mix, when she reported a spotting of the same Smart Car. Except wait a minute! It is not the same one noted above. Each are red, but have different state plates. One from New York, and one from Jersey. (boooo)

Yesterday morning I wrote that, "Hopefully I too will one day see the elusive Harlem Smart Car..."

As well, Curbed was once again on the beat yesterday, writing that "the first spotting, a few weeks back, nearly caused a neighborhood-wide panic, so who knows what this latest development portends. Be very afraid."

Well, we'll tell you what it portends. A fukn epidemic. NYC The Blog would like to be the first to report a full blown outbreak of Smart Cars in Harlem. That's right. Holla. Walking on Broadway yesterday afternoon, marveling at the different world that exists down there only a couple dozen blocks from my own home, a bright yellow (!) Smart Car was happily parked on the east side Broadway, near the corner of 122nd. And fwiw, this one <S>also had Jersey plates</S> has NY plates.

How many Smart Cars in Harlem? 3 documented cases. Will the outbreak spread, or do authorities have everything under control? dunt dunt duhh...And if you have seen a Smart Car anywhere above 110th, please do send a photo in for the Smart Car Watch©.

UPDATE: Curbed has just reported a sighting of another Smart Car, seen on the corner of 149th and St. Nicholas, bringing the now photographed number of Smart Cars in Harlem to four. !!!

UPDATE: A commenter claims the yellow Smart Car, Jewish heritage, and support for Obama.

“Black Beauty”
Customized by Dean Jeffries

The "Green Hornet" radio program debuted in 1936. Thirty years later, television revived the characters in a series starring Van Williams as the Green Hornet and martial arts legend Bruce Lee as Kato. Built by legendary customizer Dean Jeffries, a specially modified 1966 Imperial called "Black Beauty" was driven during filming by Lee and served as the crime-fighting team’s on-screen transportation. The car put a wide array of apparatus at the driver's disposal: it could create a smoke screen or spread tacks on the road to puncture the tires of pursuing vehicles, and it was fitted with a television camera that could see many miles ahead. My Mother the Car - Dubbed as one of the worst TV programs ever, MY MOTHER THE CAR/NBC/1965-66 starred a ghostly 1928 Porter automobile. The storyline follows lawyer Dave Crabtree (Jerry Van Dyke) shopping for an inexpensive car at a used-car lot only to have the car talk to him when he sat down in the black buttoned upholstery behind the wheel. The voice (heard over the car's radio) was his mother's whom had returned from the afterlife in the form of a vintage touring car. Dave immediately paid $200 and drove it home. Now whenever he had a problem he'd visited the garage and talked to his mom (voice of Ann Sothern). The Porter still had its original brakes ("Stop-on-a-Dime" Brakes) and carburetor that contained sixteen nuts, fourteen screws and three bolts. When the car needed servicing Dave took it to Doc Benson's Auto Clinic. The main conflict in the series was antique car collector Captain Bernard Mancini (Avery Schreiber) who desperately wanted to add Dave's car to his collection of antique automobiles. The car's license plate read: PZR-317. The TV car was designed by Barris Kustom Industries and powered by a 283ci Chevrolet V-8 and a Powerglide automatic transmission. The car's body (finished in Metalflake carnation red with a white top) was made up from various vehicles including a Model T Ford, a Maxwell, a Hudson and pieces of a Chevrolet. To make it appear that the car was driverless (when the ghost in the machine drove it) the rear floorboard was removed so that a second driver could be placed out of sight of the viewing audience. He drove the car using mirrors.<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O /><O:p></O:p>

My First car-68 Mustang 400 bucks + the Engine rebuild parts...Sold to a guy for 650 he wanted the 289 I rebuilt....Old Cars are cool subject...Thanks for starting the thread.

One of my best friends had one of those when we were in high school. I remember he had the back end jacked up to the legal limit of 24". We even took a measuring tape to make sure of it.

I always remember crusing down the main drag of our city when it was about 0 degrees with the windows down playing Edgar Winter's "Frankenstein" and people were looking at us strangely.

You got roads long and straight enough to get one of those pigs up to a hundred before you lose control?
