Army staffer: Halliburton case 'worst abuse'

WASHINGTON - An Army contracting officer who led the FBI to widen its investigation of Pentagon contracts to Halliburton told NBC News that she had never seen a worse case of contracting abuse.

"It was the worst abuse of the procurement and contracting system that I have seen," Bunnatine Greenhouse, the Army Corps of Engineers’ chief contracting officer, told NBC in an exclusive interview. A brief portion of the interview aired on MSNBC, and the full report will be on NBC Nightly News Friday.

Halliburton dismissed the allegations as election politics. Sen. John Kerry's campaign has seized on the allegations to charge the Bush administration of playing favorites. Vice President Dick Cheney headed Halliburton before taking office.

FBI agents this week sought permission to interview Greenhouse after she alleged that her agency unfairly awarded KBR, a Halliburton subsidiary, no-bid contracts worth billions of dollars for work in Iraq.

The line of inquiry expands an earlier FBI investigation into whether Halliburton overcharged taxpayers for fuel in Iraq, and it elevates to a criminal matter the election-year question of whether the Bush administration showed favoritism to Vice President Dick Cheney’s former company.

Darwin's theory...That has nothing to do with this thread, and I don't even know what your point is. If you want to test the water with your liberal viewpoints, go over to the politics forum. You'll get lively discussion over there.

All I am saying is that there is corruption everywhere, not just here. First look at the problems in your own back yard before you start saying a bunch of crap about someone elses.
read the article- and I did post it in the political section (also).

thank you for your point of view.

I didn't start this thread, just contributed what I knew about it in answer to some questions. Never did I say that there's no corruption in the U.S. as you wrongly imply. We've got cops and congressmen (Trafficante from Ohio being the most recent) in jail too, although not any Presidents.

You sound like a defensive little dick when you say sh*t like "First look in your own backyard before you start saying a bunch of crap about someone elses." I'll comment on anything I wish to including your sister, thank you.

The "bunch of crap" I said was all 100% true. BTW.

The politicians down here need to learn how to correctly pull it off. They skim too much and don't fix the roads, put enough cops on the street, or desks in the classrooms. At least the guys in the states make everything look good, and then steal some money.

One thing that is a fact, is that Johnny Araya is a true piece of garbage. I know a business owner that made direct cash bribes to him and ICT inspectors. It's all a mess, but more often than not, it's the way you get things done here. Its almost part of the culture here starting with giving 5,000 colones to a traffic cop to get out of a ticket.

I just hope now that with everything unraveling in the media, the costa rican people will start to get more of a fair shake.

I wish that pig Johnny Araya ill. I wish more people would come out of the closet to expose what a f*cking thief and crook Johnny Araya is. His whole family of politicians should be brought down. Johnny was pretty blatant about soliciting and accepting those bribes. They'll get around to him eventually.

I like corruption. :)
There's been plenty of times that, had I been elsewhere other than CR, I would have been jailed or accosted, but a simple bribe was an elegant and fair solution for all parties involved.

I wonder if someone murdered one of your family member and then paid a bribe to get out of it if you would feel the same way.

I'm talking about infractions that didn't harm or affect anyone but myself.

I'd feel much better about the fact he'd be dead rather than in jail.

Anyway, I wouldn't even use the term corruption to describe the fact police/officials here are amicable about petty victimless stuff like traffic offenses, arms/drug possession, immigration offenses, etc... in sharp contrast to the nazi police state up North.

I feel bad about the fact my wife is treated like a criminal just for wanting to go visit my parents, but I never needed permission to come here and had overstayed my visa here many times without consequence.

If they take a 5000 colones bribe you think when someone offers them $5000 to get off with murder they wouldn't accept?

I've heard that happens. They put you "on the books" where it looks like you're in jail in the records, but you're out on the street. That's for the criminals with big bucks.

I met you when I picked up your mom last week. I told her you're the bastard son I always wanted. I'm going to fix you too. I'll have you taking out the garbage at 6 am and doing the dishes every night.

typical outcome of threads where American "participates" with his expert opinions on everything
