Gates began camp on active/PUP, but he's in no risk of staying on reserve/PUP into the season, which would've cost him the first six games. While the 31-year-old's chronic foot injuries are a concern, he ought to be fine for Week 1. Be sure to draft a solid TE2 if you take Gates early in fantasy drafts this year.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>He'll now presumably come off the active/PUP list and begin practicing in earnest after participating in 11-on-11 drills on Thursday. Gates may have passed his physical, but his case of plantar fasciitis is expected to remain an issue all season. However, after eight months of rest, it shouldn't be nearly as big of one as it was in 2010.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>"There is a plan for him to play during the preseason," Chargers coach Norv Turner said. "That will happen when he's able to do the things he wants to do at full speed. If he can't make cuts, push off it and go, then we're going to wait until he's ready." Gates plans to take a few "practice laps," though we wouldn't expect more than a series or two per game.

Gates says he still deals with soreness from the plantar fasciitis because it's a gradual process, but the foot is improving. "That's the positive reinforcement," said Gates, who said Sunday's practice was a "really, really good sign for me." This is what we were waiting to hear, as previous reports suggested Gates would be a draft-day gamble for health reasons. It sounds like the improvement is genuine. Barring a setback over the next week or two, Gates is locked in as the No. 1 tight end.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Gates practiced again on Thursday, his fifth straight day. It's an incredibly positive sign as he deals with the lingering effects of plantar fasciitis. At this point, fantasy owners should have no qualms about selecting our No. 1 tight end on draft day. The 2011 Draft Guide projects 1,006 yards and 10 touchdowns for Gates.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>It appears Friday was just a rest day. Gates' ability to string together so much consecutive practice time bodes well for his recovery from last year's foot and toe injuries, which he's conceded will be a matter of pain management all season. When Gates is healthy this year, only Jermichael Finley -- if even him -- will be able to match his production at tight end.

At this point, Gates' plantar fasciitis appears to be in the rearview mirror. He participated in 5-of-6 practices last week, bounced back well, and is now riding a new streak. Gates may sit out the entire preseason, but owners should pretty confidently draft him as an early- to mid-round fantasy pick. Gates racked up 782 yards and 10 touchdowns last season despite missing six games and being hobbled in several others.

The Chargers are better than two-touchdown favorites over the lowly Chiefs and there's no reason to think there will be a change of plans here. Randy McMichael is the next man up and is worth a look for owners in a pinch. Just don't expect much.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Gates ran on a treadmill Tuesday and came out of it feeling good, but he is emphasizing rest at this point. His goal is to play the rest of the season uninterrupted once he finally gets back on the field. Randy McMichael, who had three catches for 25 yards in Week 4, will get the nod again.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Gates allowed that he's "making progress," but said he is still dealing with some tightness. He called returning to practice on Monday a "big step," before adding "the week is young." What Gates does in Bolts practice Wednesday will be the first real indicator of his Week 7 status. If he's not at least a limited participant, he'll likely be staring at his fourth straight inactive.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Midweek downgrades are never good news, but it could just be the Chargers don't want Gates practicing on back-to-back days after sitting out the past three games. Gates will now almost certainly be questionable for Sunday against the Jets, but Chargers beat writer Kevin Acee reported on NFL Network Thursday afternoon that he will be active. Pro Football Weekly reported earlier in the day that Gates' snaps are expected to be limited primarily to red zone this weekend.
