MLB umpire Angel Hernandez is suing the league and the commissioner's office, alleging that a long simmering personal vendetta between he and Joe Torre, as well as racial discrimination, have hindered his career advancement.

In the suit filed Monday in Ohio, Hernandez claims that Torre, MLB's chief baseball officer, is holding a grudge against him that dates back to when Torre was manager of the New York Yankees.

In a May 2001 game, Hernandez made a call that prompted Torre to remark after the game that Hernandez "just wanted to be noticed over there."

According to multiple reports, Hernandez says in his complaint that since Torre joined the league's front office in 2011, "the notion that Hernandez 'just wanted to be noticed' permeated Hernandez's yearly evaluations, as did Torre's general negative attitude towards Hernandez."

The Cuban-born Hernandez, who is in his 24th year as a major league ump, further contends that MLB is not doing an adequate job of promoting minority umpires.

Hernandez's suit states that none of the 23 umpires that have been promoted to crew chief since 2000 have been a minority. The lawsuit also claims that only one minority umpire has been assigned to the umpiring crew for the six World Series that have been played since Torre began working for MLB.

"The selection of these less qualified, white individuals over Hernandez was motivated by racial, national origin and/or ethnic considerations," the lawsuit states.

Additionally, in June, Hernandez filed two discrimination charges with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Hernandez, who says he has seen "other, less experienced, generally white umpires" promoted ahead of him, is looking for back pay, as promotions and World Series assignments feature greater financial compensation.

Hernandez, 55, has worked two World Series (2002, 2005) and last season was part of a League Championship Series crew for the seventh time.

What a tool. I wouldn't hire this clown to work a high school game. And I'm not joking. The only reason at all he got the job was because of his race. Now he wants to claim discrimination. How about looking in the mirror and realizing you suck? You get paid to have good judgment, surely you can see that you have no business wearing the blue.

I was a better umpire than this asshole when I was 16 years old. Fuck him.

Chipper Jones says he won’t watch games umpired by Angel Hernandez
Jul 6, 2013

Seems those of us on the outside looking in aren't the only ones tired of umpire Angel Hernandez's antics. Atlanta Braves legend Chipper Jones, who shared the field with the veteran arbiter on numerous occasions throughout his 19-year career, weighed in with a few of his own opinions and criticisms of Hernandez on Twitter during the Atlanta Braves 5-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

It's great. The reality is that they probably didn't fire him because of diversity wants.... then he thinks he has a ton of experience and deserves more. This is the problem with our modern view on race/ethnicity/gender/sexual orientation etc. etc. ..... the old view of bigots was bad, the view after that ... the view of the JFK's and MLK's of the world, was of each man is equal under the eyes of the law and is to be judged based on who he is, what his character is, what his merit is etc. ..... the modern view is diversity at all costs, and the costs are high.

He was one of the worst umpires, if not THE worst.

I find these types of people tend to think that others view the world the way they view the world (Like Repubs asking Trump if he will support the Republican nominee no matter who it is because they weren't going to accept him, or the Dems asking Trump if he will accept the election results and then throw the biggest collective two year old temper tantrum in human history. And it makes me wonder if there were certain countries of origin or certain races that this guy was discriminating against while he called games.
