The bottom line is we're not New York. We should have never been under the same guidelines as places like that. Texas has had less than 1000 deaths and we are the 2nd most populous state in the country with 29 million people. On a percentage basis, that's .0034% that have died from this virus. Put another way, that's 3.4 deaths per 100,000. The fact that we were closed as long as we were is simply idiotic. Way too much attention has been given to these Useful Idiots!

There is a lag time between new cases and deaths, probably around 2-3 weeks I would guess, maybe more. So, deaths today are from new cases potentially 3 weeks ago. Alhthough you would like to see deaths decrease, it is probably not the best stat to assess reopening the economy.

New cases would be a stat that I would use to judge things even though new cases will spike due to increased testing. That factor needs to be accounted for. Doubt many will. Maybe even new cases requiring hospitalization. Percentage positive tests would be a good one too, a drop in percentage of positive tests to total seems to be a positive signal.

What drives me the most crazy about this whole thing is people's ability to latch on to one statistic without any perspective and use it to advance their opinion and narrative.

Example - Jameis Winston was the best NFL QB in 2019. Why? Cause he threw for the most yards. Yeah, but he threw 30 picks, and his team didn't make the playoffs. Those factors are key in assessing best QB, but if you want to try to prove he was the best, you drop the bad stats and only mention the ones that make sense for your argument.

I'm sorry my friend, but that's a rather vague description of the death rate to begin with, "one of the deadliest", and more importantly the death rate is very much a lagging indicator.

We'll need a surge in new cases in general, specifically a surge in new cases in the states that reopened before any concerns should rise
