It would seem to me that a speed limiter installed on the train would have prevented the accident. Lets say for the sake of argument that Amtrak operates a 1000 trains a day.

The cost of a speed limiter is around $300, so we’re talking $300,000.

I’m sure the 1.3 billion budget could cover it.

Where did you get that $300 number? Also by "speed limiter" do you mean automatic braking system?

We will also continue to focus on completing Positive Train Control implementation in the Northeast Corridor by December of 2015.

Keep in mind that 93% of Amtrak's ticket revenues go to salary & benefits of the employees. So there isn't much money to spend even on basic maintenance.

The whole thing needs sold off and privatized.

So you think if public transit is not profitable we shouldn't fund it correct?

Correct.

Supply and demand is an economic model of price determination in a market; ergo, if you want to travel from New York to Philadelphia by rail, PAY FOR IT!

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short
phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it
stops moving, subsidize it. -- Ronald Reagan (1986)

What's sad is this incident is great news for people like Dave and Joe. Peoples deaths that they can use to blame Obama for again. We'll start getting pictures of all their families and all those sick and twisted memes. Despicable creatures.

And? I'm asking, should the government subsidize roads? Nothing more, nothing less.

Local and state governments using property taxes and tolls to fund roads and bridges are fine but, like most overreaching federal agencies, the Dept of Transportation established in 1967 should be scrapped.

And to think "smart people" believe an entire economy should be run this way.

The fact Amtrak is now being dragged through the political mud is insane and beyond dysfunctional. As a private corporation, Amtrak would be liable for this accident through an orderly legal process...but since Amtrak is controlled by the tentacles of government, who the hell knows what will happen! "Educated people making intelligent, informed decisions" running Amtrak can't even sell a burger without mooching off the taxpayer.

When TWA went bankrupt, other airliners stepped in and filled the void.

The market works if the government gets out of the way.

Here is an article from the NYT on Amtrak not having the PTC in place.

To date, he said, railroads have installed the technology on about 8,200 miles of tracks, out of 60,000 miles where the technology is federally required. At the end of last year, about 15 percent of locomotives were fully equipped, and railroads had installed about 56 percent of the track systems.

Railroad officials said Thursday that installation of the safety system on tracks across the country was also hampered for more than a year by longstanding F.C.C. rules that required environmental and preservation reviews before the safety system’s antennas could be installed in historic areas or near tribal lands.

But officials at the F.C.C. said those reviews, which were relaxed at the behest of members of Congress in 2014, were not specifically responsible for Amtrak delays along the largely urban Northeast Corridor because new antennas were not required in that region.

From the stimulus: The grant noted that roughly 50 percent of the money went to “infrastructure improvements” in the Northeast Corridor.
