Thursday night NFL season opener, and a rematch of the AFC title game. The Patriots went 2-0 SU & ATS against the Colts last season, but both games were nail-biters. Each time, the Pats struck quickly building up big early leads and then held on to defuse late Colt rallies. The Colts bring an explosive passing attack into this game, No. 1 in the NFL last season, behind QB Peyton Manning and WR Marvin Harrison. The knock on the Colts is the defensive line, which struggled to stop the run last fall. That was a big part of the AFC championship game between these teams. While everyone remembers the Pats secondary shutting down Manning, the New England running game was very good, providing balance in the big game. With RB Corey Dillon on board, the Pats have a better shot at testing whether the Colts are better against the run (on paper, they're not any better). The Colts were a solid 8-2 SU & 6-3 ATS on the road last season, but the Pats were 10-0 SU, 9-1 ATS at home! This is a tough game to call, but with the addition of Dillon, there should be more points than might be expected in this opener.

I have to agree with sharky ... colts turned the ball over 3 times inside the redzone ... twice inside the 5 ... colts should've won the game ... i will pound the colts next week @ tennessee if the titans win this weekend ... which they should ...

Where on earth did the line-makers find this total??? Tennessee was No. 1 defensively against the run last season, allowing 3.8 yards per carry. The Titans don't have an explosive offense, preferring to get out to an early lead and then grind the clock down. And poor Miami has had a far stronger defense than offense the last few years and suffered a ton of changes to the offense, none of them good. RB Ricky Williams retired and key acquisition WR David Boston (knee) is out for the year. This offense should struggle to score points all season. Even with Ricky Williams last season Miami slipped to 17th in the NFL rushing the football and was 26th passing the football. These teams met last season and Tennessee won 31-7 in a game that went UNDER the total. Tennessee went 4-0 UNDER the total to start last season, while Miami went 10-6 UNDER all last season. You can see where this one is going: Don't look for many points in a defensive duel.

7 Units Pittsburgh OVER 42 -105

If you like to see scoring and passing offenses, this will be one of the more entertaining games this weekend. New coach Norv Turner is a former offensive coordinator who has been a proponent of aggressive offenses. Fortunately, he has plenty of QB depth in Rich Gannon and Kerry Collins, along with WR Jerry Rice. The offense was effective in preseason, though the defense didn't look good, particularly against the pass. And passing the football is something the Steelers can do very well, behind QB Tommy Maddox, WR Hines Ward (1,163 yards, 10 TDs, 95 catches), WR Plaxico Burress (860 yards, 4 TDs, 60 catches) and WR Antawwn Randle-El. With all that speed, the Steelers went 6-2 OVER the total at home in 2003 where the offense averaged 24 ppg. Oakland was 0-8 SU & 1-7 ATS on the road last season. Look for a lot of points and a victory by the home team that also ran the ball very well in preseason.

5 Units Chicago Bears -2.5

A couple of "black and blue" midwestern teams looking to make an early positive statement. Joey Harrington enters year three in the Motor City and he’s getting a lot more help than the first two. Rookie WR Roy Williams gives the Lions a big-play threat to start opposite last year's No. 1 pick, WR Charles Rogers and Kevin Jones offers breakaway speed in the backfield. The presence of Jones - along with the maturing of Harrington and the addition of tight end threats Stephen Alexander and Casey FitzSimmons - is almost certain to elevate the Lions from the No. 32 position among NFL offenses last year. However, LBs Lehman, James Davis and Alex Lewis - struggled to make plays and stay healthy in preseason. LB Boss Bailey (knee surgery) is out. With defensive tackles Shaun Rogers and Dan Wilkinson playing side-by-side, the Lions will not be run on easily inside. And, in the secondary, Fernando Bryant has shown signs of playing with the same aggressive effectiveness. Coming off a 7-9 season, Bears fans have a new head coach in defensive guru Lovie Smith, new defensive schemes and several new bodies to make the rebuild go a bit quicker. "Rex Grossman is our quarterback..." says Smith, but Grossman wasn't particularly effective in preseason. RB Thomas Jones has shown the breakaway dimension in the backfield and the best weapon they've had in years. New addition Adewale Ogunleye is the pass rusher the Bears desperately need, as the team's pass rush last season was poor. At this point, the Bears are a work in progress, especially on offense. The Lions look ok offensively but they appear destined to struggle defensively. But for every stride forward coach Steve Mariucci accomplished with his offense, it seems there was a corresponding short-circuit in the defense. Teams split a year ago with each winning at home SU/ATS. The Bears were 6-2 SU & ATS at home in 2003, the Lions were 0-8 SU & 4-4 ATS. In fact, the Lions are 0-24 SU, 9-14-1 ATS on the road the last three years!!!

5 Units Seattle Seahawks -2.5

The Seahawks won ten games a year ago and made the playoffs for the first time in four years before losing to the Packers in the Wild Card game. The Hawks are led by the impressive Matt Hasselbeck, who has established himself as one of the strongest arms in the league after throwing for over 3,800 yards with 26 TD passes. Seattle's offense is explosive enough to build leads on most opponents. Hasselbeck, RB Shaun Alexander, WR Darrell Jackson, WR Koren Robinson and even disappointing TE Jerramy Stevens are primed for big seasons. The offense ranked sixth in the league for 2003. Seattle may get even better as the year progresses. LT Walter Jones signed a one-year deal and joined the Seattle Seahawks for practice Monday while injured LB Chad Brown is scheduled to return in mid October. The defense features DE Grant Wistrom, LB Chad Brown, CB Marcus Trufant and CB Bobby Taylor. In 2003, the Hawks were 8-0 SU & 5-3 ATS at home and a miserable 2-7 SU & 4-4 ATS on the road. The reason was defense: Seattle allowed 14.5 points per game at home, but 27 ppg on the road. The Saints are coming off another disappointing 8-8 season which began with four losses in their first five games a year ago. Aaron Brooks really had a pretty good season if you take away 11 fumbles. Brooks threw for 3,546 yards, 24 TDs and a league low 8 interceptions. Brooks still terrorizes defenses with his feet as well as his arm. After allowing 119 points in their first four games a year ago, the Saints gave up just 207 in the final 12 contests. Points allowed were also down in the first three exhibition games when the starters were on the field as they allowed just one touchdown. The Saints had trouble stopping the run a year ago and you don't want to have defensive weaknesses against the Seattle offense. New Orleans QB Aaron Brooks is still nursing a strained right quadriceps muscle which could be critical. Hasselbeck is ready to rumble.

7 Units Philadelphia Eagles -9

A tough first game in store for the Giants who look to rebound from a dreadful 4-12 season that ended with the replacement of HC Jim Fassel with controlling HC Tom Coughlin. The table has been reset for the New Yorkers with the addition of a new quarterback duo now that Kerry Collins has departed and Kurt Warner and Eli Manning have arrived. The Giants head to Philly with a new offensive line, which has not exactly been the rock of Gibralter in preseason. The skill positions are in good hands with 1,200 yard rusher Tiki ‘lightening’ Barber and a renewed Ron Dayne who looked like the ‘thunder’ of old in preseason. Amani Toomer and Ike Hilliard provide ample weapons for Warner, though a healing TE Jeremy Shockey (listed as questionable) might not play fuly healthy in this one but he says he'll be ready. Defensively, the Giants are looking for a more aggressive unit than a year ago when the defense did little to create turnovers and make red zone stops. In the preseason, the first team defense stopped no one. A healthy defensive backfield could help turn things around on that side of the ball as Will Allen and Will Peterson, at the corners, have the tools, but so far, not the good health to make an impact. The Eagles have added a new terror at wide receiver with the arrival of Terrell Owens, an impact player. QB Donovan McNabb is still behind center and has one goal this season and that’s a trip to the Super Bowl. The Philly defense is still solid in the trenches and added Jevon Kearse. Philly is healthy for this one. This won't be a pretty picture for New York. Giants fans should hope for a blackout on Sunday afternoon!!!

10 Units Minnesota Vikings -5

The Cowboys (LY: 10-7, SU, 9-7 ATS) surprised more than a few experts last season when they went to a Wild Card game. HC Bill Parcells ran his ball control offense, beefed up his defense and all the pieces fell together as Dallas ranked second in the league in defense, allowing 16.3 ppg. This time around, Vinnie Testaverde, who had an impressive preseason, will run the show after the sudden departure of Quincy Carter. The running attack will be upgraded by the addition of Julius Jones from Notre Dame and FA Eddie George. O-line needs were addressed with OT Jacob Rogers and G Stephen Peterman. The passing game has good depth with WR Terry Glenn, WR Antonio Bryant and newcomer WR Keyshawn Johnson. The defense ranked #2 during the regular season but they finished 21st in turnover ratio. However, they were 25th in interceptions and 21st in sacks a year ago. The Vikings have one of the top offensive lines in the league and Daunte Culpepper at quarterback plus WR Randy Moss, though RB Michael Bennett will miss this game. The offense will remain pretty much intact, a good thing, but defensive changes are in order and Mike Tice used the draft for the defensive side of the ball. RB Bennett is out and backup RB Onterrio Smith failed a drug test (for marijuana) and has gotten himself suspended by the league for the first four games. RB Moe Williams will fill in. Minnesota was much better at home last season (6-2 SU, 5-3 ATS) than on the road while Dallas managed a road record of 4-5 SU, ATS.
