The Big East Conference Season Opener for Connecticut. Rutgers lost their opener to Georgetown 63-57 Saturday. So we have here the preseason top team and bottom team in the league. This should be little more than a warmup for UConn. In their last non-league game, Emeka Okafor led UConn with 27 points and 14 rebounds and the Huskies rolled to their eighth straight win, 92-83 over Rice. Charles Villanueva had 24 points for the Huskies, who boosted their record to (11-1 SU, 3-5 ATS; R: 1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS). Rutgers (H: 5-0 SU, 2-1 ATS) isn't unmanned, they have Ricky Shields (13 ppg), 6'10" center Herve Lamizana (13 ppg) and freshman guard Quincy Douby who can really shoot from outside. The trouble is that they're shooting just 41% from the field as a team and against a dominant defense like UConn, the trouble will be magnified. The addition of Villaneueva two weeks ago took the top-ranked Huskies from very, very good to extremely so. Rutgers has the home court and little else, and a year ago UConn won 87-70.
5 Units Georgetown -4.5 -110
A couple of early season scares are keeping the Eagles from getting big egos. Boston College (10-2 SU, 3-4 ATS; R: 1-2 SU, 1-1 ATS) has been its own worst enemy in its early struggles. It needs to get better play out of its backcourt. Craig Smith (17 ppg) has picked up some of the scoring but the Eagles still need to add scoring pressure to their offense. Freshman 6'7" Jared Dudley (12 ppg) and Sean Marshall (9 ppg) will get better with time but they are young. The Hoyas schedule is filled with early season "W's" but they did win their conference opener 63-57 over Rutgers over the weekend. Brandon Bowman had 20 points and nine rebounds to lead unbeaten (10-0 SU, 2-3 ATS) Georgetown. Darrel Owens scored 14 points and Courtland Freeman added 11 as the Hoyas improved to 10-0. Bowman also had four blocks and three steals. Leading scorer Gerald Riley scored just 9 points due to early foul trouble. No question BC has the bodies to create some havoc this season and in the future. For now, however, the Hoyas, are tough at home and have strong pressure defense.
5 Units Wisconsin -14 +102
The Indiana (R: 2-2 SU, ATS) Hoosiers, who shoot a humble 39% from the field, can expect trouble as they head to Madison on Tuesday. On Saturday, they lost to Temple 59-50 showing that good defense isn't always a clear path to winning without some offense. Guard Bracey Wright is second in the Big Ten in scoring with an average of 22 ppg and is the Hoosiers leading rebounder at 6.4 per game but no other starter is averaging double digits. Center George Leach's sprained ankle turned out to be a torn tendon. He will be out until mid-January and the Hoosiers will be at a disadvantage on the boards until he gets back in the lineup. For the Badgers, Devin Harris scored 19 points and Zach Morley added 18 to lead Wisconsin to a 75-49 victory over College of Charleston. Mike Wilkinson scored 15 points for the Badgers (9-2 SU, 6-5 ATS; Home: 7-0 SU, 4-3 ATS)), who shot 50 percent from the field and extended their home winning streak to 20 games. A year ago the Badgers won 71-59 and they are at home again with that winning streak. Expect a result not unsimilar to that.
10 Units Wake Forest -29 -111
I know that a lot of points and I almost never play games over -15 or higher!!! Undefeated Wake Forest (9-0 SU, 6-2 ATS) looks to remain that way as they face off against struggling Ivy League opponent Brown (3-8 SU, 1-3 ATS). However, Brown has no idea what they are up against as they travel to Wake Forest. Brown has traveled a lot so far this year with very little success (2-6 SU, 0-2 ATS). Now they get ACC powerhouse Wake Forest -- Good luck! Wake is averaging 87 points a game at Home and Brown is only mustering 66 points a game. Overcoming those stats is a tall order for the smart kids. Wake center Eric Williams is dominating teams averaging 18 points and 6 rebounds a game. He is also shooting 60% from the floor. Brown is giving 75 points a game to teams such as Hartford and Stony Brook. This is a massacre in the making!!!
