FRIDAY 2-1 +4.65 UNITS
Here are today early selections. I will be back later with the mid-day action as well as the late games!!! Let me know what you think.
5 Units Seton Hall -1.5 -107 (LOST)
The Hall (R: 5-4 SU, 5-3 ATS) beating Pitt wasn't a miracle on Monday. It was team defense and Andre Barrett, who wouldn't let Seton Hall lose. The senior point guard had 20 points, including the winning free throw with 9.6 seconds left in the second overtime, six assists and no turnovers in 49 minutes in the Pirates' 68-67 victory. Pittsburgh and Seton Hall came into the game ranked 1-2 in the Big East in scoring defense and both lived up to that stat, finishing regulation tied at 57. The Pirates, also got 10 points each from Kelly Whitney and J.R. Morris. Golden (H: 8-5 SU, 4-6 ATS) Domers' Chris Thomas and Chris Quinn finally played well together, and that was enough to beat Connecticut. Thomas scored 22 of his season-high 31 points in the second half and Quinn added 17 points to lead the Irish to an 80-74 victory over the Huskies on Monday, ending a three-game losing streak. Thomas had been in a slump for six games before scoring 23 in a loss to Pittsburgh on Saturday, when Quinn went 0-for-8. Against Connecticut, though, everything changed. Torrian Jones added 14 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Irish (11-9, 5-5 Big East). Enough sparring, it's time to get down to the nitty-gritty in the Big East. The Hall showed they can play with anyone on Monday. Notre Dame ended their three game losing streak in an impressive manner, as well. Bottom line is to look for that Hall defense to slow down the Irish who have melted in the strong defensive heat before.
7 Units Rice -9 -106 (LOST)
There should be plenty of offense in this WAC game. Tulsa (7-14, 3-9 in WAC) is terrible on the road at 1-10 SU/2-7 ATS. Tulsa is 0-4 SU/ATS the last four games and is off a 78-66 loss at UTEP. Anthony Price led Tulsa with 14 points, and Tulsa's leading scorer, G Jason Parker, was held to eight points on 3-of-14 shooting. Tulsa shoots 44% as a team but allows 73 ppg on the road, while run-and-gun Rice averages 78 ppg at home. Tulsa has 6’-2” senior Jason Parker (18 ppg) and 6’-6” junior forward Jarius Glenn (12 ppg, 6 rpg). Rice (15-7 SU, 9-7 ATS) likes to run, with 6’-6” junior Michael Harris (18 ppg, 9 rpg), 6’-4” junior Jason McKrieth (15 ppg, 5 rpg), and senior point guard Rashid Smith (5.7 apg). Rice plays its best ball at home (9-2 SU, 5-2 ATS) and the Owls lost 74-68 at Tulsa last month. Tulsa is 3-0 SU/ATS the last three meetings with Rice; but look for a high scoring game and the home team to get another home 'W'.
3 Units Penn State +11 -106 (LOST)
Aaron Johnson came off the bench for Penn State (9-11, 3-6) to lead the team with 28 points and 15 rebounds. His point total tied the rest of the team but it wasn't good enough as the Nittany (R: 2-6 SU, 3-5 ATS) lost to Indiana 75-56 this week. The Hoosiers jumped out to a 24-6 lead early in the game by hitting seven of its first eight 3-point attempts leading to a 39-17 lead at the half. In a surprise, Northwestern used a stingy matchup zone defense and timely shooting down the stretch to earn their second straight upset win, 40-39, over Purdue on Wednesday night. Northwestern coach Bill Carmody called his team's defensive performance in the previous win over the Wisconsin Badgers their best of the season. But this game was even better. The Wildcats held Purdue (15-8, 5-5) to season lows in points (39) and just 34 percent shooting. Penn State won the first meeting 63-61 so we can expect another close, low scoring game as the Cats continue on their mini-winning streak.
5 Units B.Y.U. -1 +102 (WON)
A couple of Mountain West money-burners meet: BYU is 3-7 ATS on the road, while Wyoming is 4-14 ATS overall! Wyoming is stuck in last place in the MWC (2-6), but while they are 9-12 SU overall, the Cowboys are strong at home (9-3 SU, 4-6 ATS). Wyoming may struggle under the boards this game, however, as they lack height and that is BYU's strength. The BYU Cougars (14-7 SU, 10-8 ATS) shoot 48% as a team, behind star players 6’-7” senior Mark Bigelow (13 points pg) and 6’-11” senior center Rafael Araujo (18 ppg, 57% FGs, 10 rpg). But BYU is just 3-7 SU on the road where it is getting outscored by a 68-64 average. Poor Wyoming has lost 8 of 10 games and a lack of offense is the problem. Wyoming has a decent backcourt of 5’-11” junior Jason Straight (14 ppg) and 6’-2” senior David Adams (10 ppg), but Wyoming carries a 1-10-1 ATS run into this game! On January 19 BYU used its inside game to rip Wyoming, 78-64 at home and covered. While they have been shaky on the road, BYU should get the road win here as they match up well with the home team.
5 Units Indiana State +6 -110 (LOST)
You won't see a lot of scoring in this Missouri Valley Conference game. Indiana State shoots 41% from the field averaging 56 ppg on the road, while Illinois State outscores teams by a 65-61 average at home. Indiana State (8-13) is just 2-7 SU (though 6-2 ATS) on the road and they have only one double-digit scorer in 6'-5" sophomore G Damian Moss (15 ppg). They really have only two decent players in Moss and 6'-7" junior Amani Daanish. The Illinois State Redbirds (6-15 SU, 7-11 ATS) aren't much better, with few scoring options, led by 6’-8” sophomore Marcus Arnold (13 ppg, 4.8 rpg) and junior guard Trey Guidry (13 ppg). Last month Indiana State won 56-49 at home and this game will also be close with little scoring.
10 Units Texas -6.5 -104 (LOST)
Texas (R: 5-1 SU, 4-2 ATS) is on a 5-game winning streak and making noises from atop the Big-12. This week, Kenny Taylor scored 18 points on six 3-pointers and Texas beat the Baylor Bears 84-58 Tuesday night. Kenton Paulino added 15 points with four 3-pointers for Texas and P.J. Tucker had 10 points and eight rebounds. The Longhorns, who have won 12 of 13 games, shot 51 percent (31-of-61). Iowa State (H: 12-1 SU, 7-3 ATS) suffered their worst loss of the season this week when they lost to Kansas State 90-59. Kansas State built a big early lead and never looked back, shooting 56 percent in the first 20 minutes to take a 47-25 halftime lead. Iowa State had 10 turnovers in the first 10 minutes of the game, and the Wildcats capitalized. They went on a 9-0 run to start the game. Jackson Vroman led Iowa State with 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Curtis Stinson scored 16 points. IS is a guard oriented offense with Vromen getting some inside play. The Longhorns are more well balanced. A year ago Texas won their third straight over Iowa State 70-50. The trend continues.
Check back later for the Mid-day Action!!!
