NFL Futures Explained

  • PERTINENT INFORMATION:

Futures are very different from other stocks. Simply put, a future is a stock which will expire at seasons/playoffs end. If the team that you bought a future in wins the championship, you will claim a portion of the pot created from sales of all the futures. You may also win a portion of the pot if your team is runner-up in the championship game. Should your team be eliminated from the playoffs at any point before the final championship game, your future will expire with a value of zero. Therefore, you are risking more because your stock does not hold any value after the season unless it is a winner. But should you win, you are likely to win a significant amount of money. If you have a strong feeling about who will win, you may prefer to buy a future in your team rather than a stock... then again, you may want to buy a few of each.

At Allsportsmarket, a future is a type of stock which expires within a given time-frame. The date on which the future expires will generally be the day of the final game of a season. Currently there are two types of futures:

1) GAME FUTURE - A future which covers a single play-off game between two teams and expires after the game. (i.e. NCAA Football Bowl Game)

2) SEASON FUTURE - A future which covers an entire season for a specific league and expires after the final play-off game of the season. (i.e. NFL Season)

A future in any team involved in either the GAME or the SEASON can be purchased. The starting prices of the futures will be based on the odds of that team winning the GAME or SEASON.

Like regular stocks, futures are released in batches of IPO's. Each batch is released at the same or higher price than the last batch, until all IPO's are sold. Traders are able to buy and sell futures from each other at any point prior to the payout of the future(s). A 5% commission is charged on each transaction.

Unlike regular stocks, futures will expire and pay out only to the winner of the GAME or SEASON. In the case of SEASON FUTURES, futures will pay out a percentage of the pot to both the winner and the runner-up.

The percentage in the case of NFL FUTURES is 80% for the winner and 20% to the runner up!!

For every future which is sold, the money used to purchase each IPO sold will be sent directly to the dividend pot. All commissions on those trades will be given to ASM. The pot will continue to grow from player-to-player trades, not just from IPO trades. (it will be updated periodically so don't worry if you don't see it grow immediately after a trade.) It will grow by half the commission fee.

All of the money in the dividend pot is split between the owners of the winning futures.

The number of futures available to be purchased (the float), can vary between different leagues and/or games. However, every team involved in a specific GAME or SEASON, will have an identical number of IPO's available. Generally, the float for NFL is 2000 for each team.

Remember, the secret to making more money on futures is to buy early! The longer you wait, the less profit you can earn.. that's why they're called 'FUTURES'. ;-)

Good luck to those that participate, and if you don't like the higher risk and higher profit potential of futures, then please simply don't play them.

Payout Scenarios

In order to show just how profitable NFL futures could be this year, we have created a few different scenarios, all of which are feasible and result in different outcomes.

Assumptions:
  • No Player-to-Player trades take place
  • 13 cent incremental increase on all teams (this appears to be slightly under the real increase)
  • 100 shares sell at the initial price before 10 share blocks are released
  • Order based on team win/loss records or who is winning their division
  • Current top 4 team: Indianapolis, Denver, Chicago, Seattle
  • Other 4 top teams: Cincinnati, New England, Dallas, Carolina

Scenarios:

1) The current top 8 teams sell 2000 shares and no other teams sell a share:

Total Pot: $273,608
Win/Shr: $109.44
Loss/Shr: $27.36

2) The current top 8 teams sell 1000 shares and no other teams sell a share:

Total Pot: $85,038
Win/Shr: $68.03
Loss/Shr: $17.01

3) The current top 8 teams sell 1000 share but the top 4 teams sell 2000:

Total Pot: $176,798
1000 share Win/Shr: $141.44
1000 share Loss/Shr: $35.36
2000 share Win/Shr: $70.72
2000 share Loss/Shr: $17.68

4) All teams with a winning record sell 1000 shares:

Total Pot: $161,876
Win/Shr: $129.50
Loss/Shr: $32.38

5) All teams with a winning record sell 1000 shares and the top 4 sell 2000:

Total Pot: $253,636
1000 share Win/Shr: $202.91
1000 share Loss/Shr: $50.73
2000 share Win/Shr: $101.45
2000 share Loss/Shr: $25.36

Another way to make money on these shares is to buy and resell later at a higher price. The final 10 shares of these teams (based on 100 selling at the opening price and 10 share blocks selling for a 13 cent increase) should be:

Indi - $36.70
Cinci - $28.20
NE - $34.20
Denver - $26.20
Dallas - $29.20
Chicago - $25.65
Carolina - $30.95
Seattle - $28.95

Its Sunday.... get your futures before the price rises!!

Santo thanks for the question:

Well the formula is:

Potential First/Current Price to get fractional odds..

All are positive

So Fractional to Moneyline:

a/b in fractional * 100

So for example:

Colts:

27.37/16.7 = +163

That assumes no growth in the pot of course.

Or in short
:

(Winning Dividend/Current Price)*100

Of course pre-superbowl that changes to

(Winning Dividend/Current Price-Losing Dividend)*100

FYI: Colts are currently +100 at most sportsbooks.

With ASM comission;

(Winning Dividend/(CurrentPrice*1.05))*100 to be strictly accurate.

Current ML ODDS compared to sportsbooks!!! (pinnacle will be used)

Chargers +3290.9 (ASM) vs +2100 (Pinnacle)
Panthers +1632.29 (ASM) vs +750 (Pinnacle)
Colts +613.46 (ASM) vs -105 (Pinnacle)
Giants +2563.27 (ASM) vs +2000 (Pinny)
Patriots +2550.45 (ASM) vs +2000 (Pinny)
Broncos +1511.38 (ASM) vs +1200 (pinny)
Seahawks +1176.68 (ASM) vs +900 (pinny)
Cowboys +2267.07 (ASM) vs +2000 (pinny)

* Represents largest % differences from ASM to Sportsbooks!!

:money:

** Price may be different now based on # of shares that have sold since the last update as well as the price of the future at the time of this listing. Please check all prices on www.allsportsmarket.com for real time numbers.

Good Luck.

Wow!!

Peebs
Youre making my $1000+ in NFL futures sound really nice. I think the advantage of ASM (besides the addictive nature of the site and general) is that if you spend a lot of money in the futures, and descide before the playoffs you want out, you can still make an amazing profit. There are a lot of teams that will most likely be clinching playoff spots and division crowns by next weekend. This will shoot the price of the future way up... If I had more cash, id be investing.
Anyway, great info Peebs. Keep the posts coming as soon as some updates can be made.... Im sure youll be able to give us some more information after today's games?
