If it is --then why does Spysweeper consider it spyware or adware?

Is it (Alexa toolbar) harmfull to the user in ANY way?
NoAdware never even finds it.

Cut and Paste, from another web site.

Alexa is a free, ad-based product which installs itself into your Internet Explorer or Netscape browser. It ads a bar which has a series of links into your browser which gives quite a bit of information about each web page that you visit. For example, the contact information, related links, reviews of the site, traffic and some other information is displayed.

Sorry for the caps, but ...

Alexa has an additional purpose, however, as is explained in their privacy policy.

"ALEXA COLLECTS AND STORES INFORMATION ABOUT THE WEB PAGES YOU VIEW, THE DATA YOU ENTER IN ONLINE FORMS AND SEARCH FIELDS WHILE USING THE ALEXA SOFTWARE, AND, WITH VERSIONS 5.0 AND HIGHER OF THE BROWSER COMPANION SOFTWARE, THE PRODUCTS YOU PURCHASE ONLINE. ALTHOUGH ALEXA DOES NOT ATTEMPT TO ANALYZE WEB USAGE DATA TO DETERMINE THE IDENTITY OF ANY ALEXA USER, SOME INFORMATION COLLECTED BY THE SOFTWARE IS PERSONALLY IDENTIFIABLE. ALEXA AGGREGATES AND ANALYZES THE INFORMATION IT COLLECTS TO IMPROVE ITS SERVICE AND TO PREPARE REPORTS ABOUT AGGREGATE WEB USAGE AND SHOPPING HABITS."

So what does this and the remainder of a very long privacy policy translate to in plain English? Alexa watches you surf the internet and transmits the URLs of the sites that you visit back to their computer system. Their stated intention is to build up a list of related links for each page that you visit. They also watch your shopping patterns to get an idea of what you are purchasing online, and presumably where you are purchasing things on the internet.

It's very interesting that Alexa is owned by Amazon.Com, and one of the "great" features of their browser bar is something they call a "shopping feature". This allows Amazon (and other business partners) to offer you comparative shopping advice while you surf through other sites.

Alexa now has a well written and lengthy privacy policy, but it was not always that way. In fact, there is a pending (as of May) class action lawsuit because Alexa didn't have a privacy policy posted on it's website at all. This meant that people who downloaded and installed the bar were not made aware that their movements through the internet were being watched and recorded.

I view this product as a major threat to privacy. My advice to anyone would be to do without it - the product is not that useful. It is most definitely spyware, although now that Alexa has taken the time to write up a privacy policy at least we are a little more informed as to what they are recording and what they are attempting to accomplish.

Thanks Much-No1! I agree with you now after reading this!
What happen is: When I run the Internet Repair tool, the Alexa toolbar is installed somehow. The reason that I dun the Internet Repair tool, is that when I listen to major league baseball games on-line; frequently I get some type of error message. Now--when I run the IE repair tool and it puts the Alexa bar back inside the computer--I have NO problem listening to my PAID subscription. So it's either listen to it on Firefox--Mozilla and have shutdown problems or have this Spyware with IE.
What a mess!

You should have the option to REMOVE the Alexa toolbar from the ADD/REMOVE program icon, inside the Control Panel. If not, I would recommend you use Ad-Aware, Pest Patrol, or any other spyware remover.

What version of Windows are you running?

I'll try to help, if you have any problems.

I have never looked inside the Add/Remove Programs box (to see if it's there). The only way that I know it's there is when Spysweeper finds it . Right now--I have it removed, so if I listen to mlb on IE tonight it will play for a little while and then I'll get some error message. (I NEVER get this problem while listening on Mozilla).

Some spyware programs are known to re-install theirselves after a re-boot.

Keep checking for spyware and always keep your spyware definitions up to date.

Exactly right Chalk. I removed cookies this morning and made what I thought were only slight changes to help my computer run a little better and got the message: "requires system restart" . When I did that back came the Alexa toolbar. It was not in the Add/Remove programs box. But good old spysweeper found it. So I deleted it from there.

This morning when I cleared cookies I decided to change passwords, since I had (what I thought was) a security problem when Wsex opened their new web site. Somehow, when I reset passwords, I told the computer that I was the only user of the computer (which I am) and it proceded to erase not only all my passwords but ALL my email address in Outlook Express. (No problem with pass words as I kept them written down) But I have lost ALL my emais address and have no idea how to get them back except wait for an email from them). If you know of a SIMPLE and I mean VERY simple way to get them back--I'd really be interested). No to worry about it--at least I feel better about a couple of my passwords which I was able to change! I learn most things the HARD way. Take care
