AG Barr vows to prosecute protesters under 1960s anti-riot law

Attorney General Bill Barr will go after violent demonstrators with a 1968 law meant to quell rioting.

“We must have law and order on our streets and in our communities,” Barr said Saturday at DOJ headquarters in Washington, DC.

“It is a federal crime to cross state lines or to use interstate facilities to incite or participate in violent rioting,” he said. “We will enforce these laws.”

Barr accused “anarchistic and far-left extremists, using Antifa-like tactics” for the unrest that has spread to cities throughout the nation since Monday, in the wake of the death of George Floyd while in the custody of Minneapolis police.

“Groups of outside radicals and agitators are exploiting the situation to pursue their own separate and violent agenda,” he said.

The federal Anti-Riot Act, part of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, carries penalties of up to five years in prison.

I would prefer if they just shoot and kill the people doing this stuff

that way we do not have to foot the bill of prosecuting and housing these pieces of sh-it
Once they see they can be shot and killed doing what they are doing they will not
they do what they do as they are paid by Antifa, BLM, etc and know they will not have anything happen to them no matter what they

M777 it seems we are heading for a civil war at some point and if it is with the likes of Antifa and their ilk
it will be a short war from my view point. The people who have guns and are good citizens will be taking these Antifa thugs out at some point
so far it has been that we have been putting up with these groups and people at some point that will change and it will get ugly for the Antifa and

Attorney General Barr gave a hasty press conference in which he claimed that “outside radicals and agitators are exploiting the situation to pursue their own separate and violent agenda.” He said, “in many places, it appears the violence is planned, organized and driven by anarchic and left extremist groups, far-left extremist groups, using antifa-like tactics, many of whom travel from outside the state to promote the violence.”

There is currently no evidence that what Barr said is true.



He went on to say “It is a federal crime to cross state lines or to use interstate facilities to incite or participate in violent rioting, and we will enforce those laws.” After Barr spoke, Trump tweeted: “80% of the RIOTERS in Minneapolis last night were from OUT OF STATE. They are harming businesses (especially African American small businesses), homes, and the community of good, hardworking Minneapolis residents who want peace, equality, and to provide for their families.” He added: “It’s ANTIFA and the Radical Left. Don’t lay the blame on others!”



About the same time Barr was speaking, St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter told reporters that “Every single person we arrested last night, I’m told, was from out of state,” and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz estimated that 80% of those destroying property were from out of state. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey added: “We are now confronting white supremacists, members of organized crime, out-of-state instigators, and possibly even foreign actors to destroy and destabilize our city and our region.” The Minnesota Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington said they had begun tracing those they arrested to see if they were part of larger networks.



A preliminary study today by local network KARE found that, in fact, 86% of those arrested were from Minnesota. Of the others, at least one was associated with a white supremacist group.



While we cannot know yet what’s going on now, it is of note that the president has encouraged violence lately in his tweets, retweeting a video in which a supporter says “The only good Democrat is a dead Democrat,” and a famous line from segregationist politician George Wallace “When the looting starts, the shooting starts.”
