I know these used to be a big deal years ago, but do they still exist? How long do they last? Where would one find one of these?

Anyone know someone that has one of these?

I think they lost a lot of their luster when cable went digital. I don't think they get any of the digital stations, but could be wrong.

your friend cannot have a cable box that descrambles the signal, unless his cable system is from 10 years ago.
There are no cable boxes that can descramble the signal, reason being the cable system works on a back and forth sending of the signal and its easy for cable companies to foil any illegal cable boxes. Lets say you sign up for cable and you hook up a illegal box, that box wont even recieve the necessary signal to descamble the stations, unless you are actually paying for the channels.
Like i said your friend is bullshitting you or his cable company is in the dark ages.
