Speaking of Arnold, there is a plaque on the right side of the 16 fairway at Royal Birkdale that commemorates the famous shot Palmer hit in 1961 to win his 1st Open Title.
During the final round Palmers ball was in a sandy ditch at the bottom of some blackberry bushes. He hit a six-iron 190 yards to within 2 feet of the hole. That birdie won him the tournament by 1 stroke.
Palmer was beloved around the world, a true American Hero.
