Have trip planned for the St Thomas / St. Johns in July. (praying it still sticks). We have a 3.5 hour lay over in Atlanta. Wanted to see the sights and at least try some food. Its not an international flight so don't have to worry about customs.

Is 3.5 hours enough time to get out at Hartsfield-Jackson?

Traveled through ATL a million times. Pretty big airport, it's a tran ride from your terminal to get out of the building. I'd plan 20m to get out of the building, 30m back through security, and 20m to get back to your gate. Leaves you a couple hours to uber somewhere.

Not a ton of sights to see in Atlanta though...

Normally would be tight because there's nothing to see near airport but depends what you want to see. If just checking out the Peachtree St area then best is to jump onto Marta at airport to Peachtree station, walk up Peachtree and then back on train to airport. Prob 20 min train back/forth so gives u an hour to see downtown.

I missed a connecting flight coming home from our honeymoon there (we had like a 3 hour layover and still missed our flight), but it was an international flight. I found that airport to be one of the worst run ones I have been too and the workers were extremely rude.

Delta hub helps...

well yea, it's their home base, and it's all I try to fly, really, besides Southwest, but without the drive or extra ticket to ATL, their directg service from my local airport is limited...

When I lived in Birmingham 98% of all flights I took were Delta through Atlanta.
I fly mostly SW and United now, mostly just a function of what's available.
I like Delta as an airline even if ATL sucks.

How long is the plane ride from Birmingham to Atlanta? 30 min?

yes we're flying Delta in and Delta back out. Not sure about sites. Was looking to try to local food most of all. Figured 3.5 hrs was enough time to find some recommended food spots near the airport.

Better hope there isn't a wreck if you are going downtown and coming back
