EURO 2008
Israel vs Russia
My pick is Russia to win
30 units to win 17.40 units ( 1.58 at betfair ! )
I would recommend to get this early because the line will drop big time .
Russia has to win their next 2 games and they will qualify for the EURO 2008 . After this game they will play Andorra and I dont think it will be a problem to beat them .
With Benayoun out, Israel captain will now be Tal Ben-Haim, and we all know who signs his weekly pay-cheques at Chelsea
... Abramovich also owns their best young striker Ben Sahar .
There will be a number of players from reigning Israeli Champion and current table-topper Beitar Jerusalem on the field (Gershon, Alberman, Baruchyan, Tamuz, etc.) ... and the owner of Beitar, also happens to be Russian (Arcadi Gaydamak), it's the the same family who owns Portsmouth FC in the EPL ... in another words, half of the Isreali team that will play against Russia, are actually on the pay-roll of Russians already .
Think of England? Israeli football has been too busy navel-gazing. The country has been shocked by a racism scandal involving Beitar Jerusalem, the league champions. In a recent match against Maccabi Haifa, some of their notoriously right-wing supporters chanted “Death to Arabs” during a minute’s silence to mark the twelfth anniversary of the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, the former Israeli Prime Minister, also cheering for Rabin’s killer.
It means that the Euro 2008 qualifier against Russia on Saturday has made little impression on the national consciousness, for all the talk in England. “People have been focusing on it [the scandal] to a very large extent. They haven’t given Russia much of a thought,” Ori Lewis, a Reuters correspondent based in Jerusalem, said.
That will change this week as the build-up begins in earnest. The match is not likely to be a sell-out, although it is hard to say for sure because Israelis tend to do things at the last minute. That Russia are the opponents adds spice because about a million Russian immigrants live in Israel – 15 per cent of the population.
That means that a large percentage of the crowd – as many as 20,000 people in the 45,000-capacity Ramat Gan Stadium, in Tel Aviv – will cheer on Guus Hiddink’s team. Including a few billionaires and millionaires making the trip from Moscow: the Israeli FA is creating a special corporate hospitality area to meet the demand for exclusive facilities fit for oligarchs.
Paying £500 a ticket, hundreds of rich and powerful figures will hobnob on Saturday. Arkadi Gaydamak, the Beitar owner and father of Alexandre, the Portsmouth owner, is one of several influential Russian business-men based in Israel.
It would be no surprise to see Roman Abramovich, the Chelsea owner and Russian football benefactor, in the stands alongside Avram Grant, the Chelsea first-team coach and former Israel manager, and Pini Zahavi, the “super-agent”, who is close to both. A joke doing the rounds is that Abramovich has been instructing Grant not to play Tal Ben Haim, the Israel captain, so he will not be match-fit.
