Police in Philadelphia are looking for a suspect after someone appeared to break into a parked truck with bolt cutters and steal a substantial chunk of change — literally.
The incident took place early morning Thursday in a Walmart parking lot in Northeast Philadelphia, where investigators believe a suspect got away with about 1 million dimes, or $100,000, from the trailer. Police said the truck seemed to be holding an estimated $750,000 in dimes total.
There were also thousands of dimes scattered across the parking lot all the way to a nearby road — a mess that seemed to be created by the suspect while trying to get away; crews spent hours cleaning up.
According to reporting by the CBS News affiliate in Philadelphia, the truck driver had picked up the coins from the Philadelphia Mint in Old City, drove to the Northeast where he lives, parked the trailer in the parking lot overnight and went home to rest before the next leg of his trip to Florida. Police said that was not an "unusual" practice.
Authorities said that while the specific incident of stealing dimes is unusual, they have seen an increase in cargo thefts in the area lately.
"We've had lamb, chicken, TVs, refrigerators, etcetera taken," said Captain John Ryan of the Philadelphia Police Department.
Police are now looking through surveillance video for leads on who could have done this. No one has been arrested yet.

I guess someone dumb enough to steal dimes would be dumb enough to give 12percent of that haul to change it into dollars.......

That would be pretty funny though, the police would be staking out coinstars within a 2 mile perimeter...lol

Not sure how "dumb" it is. Could be genius. Still early, but if he isn't caught $200,000 it a nice score.

Something that I think is dumb and drives me nuts is people sticking up convenience or liquor stores. Using weapon and creating a dangerous situation for a few hundred bucks see insane to me.

If you are gonna steal, really go for it, seems this guy did.

-could be inside job with driver part of it
-could have been real smart criminal (s) who scouted out trucks leaving the mint and patterns
-could have been a cargo thief that just got lucky with dimes inside (something easy to move)

Sure, dimes will be a hassle to cash in, I'm sure he we find ways and come up with ideas.

I wish I could do the math on how much $100,000.00 of dimes weighs. Seems like a lot of weight to me.
All U.S. dimes (10-cent pieces) minted since 1965 weigh 2.268 grams (0.080 ounces). US dimes have a diameter of 17.91 mm, a thickness of 1.35 mm, and are composed of in a metallic “clad sandwich” of copper (91.67%) and nickel (8.33%).

One million dimes x .o8 oz ea =80,000 oz /16=5000lbs

Good math, MK. 5000 lbs is a lot of pounds to move quickly. I'm surprised they got away with as many dimes as they did. I hope their vehicle had heavy duty shocks.

Initial reports this morning were 200k out of 750k. Obviously 100k not nearly as good, but not too bad.

The mess isn't a big deal to the thief. I'm sure he took all he could. Probably didn't want to push his luck. probably a good idea.
