Kyle Vantrease was the starting quarterback at Buffalo last season. This year, Vantrease starts at Georgia Southern against his former team in the Camellia Bowl on Tuesday in Montgomery, Ala.
Georgia Southern (6-6) will be participating in a bowl game for the fifth time; the Eagles are 3-1 and won the 2018 Camellia Bowl. Buffalo (6-6) is in its sixth bowl game; the Bulls are 2-3 and won the 2020 Camellia Bowl.
This will be the first meeting between the two teams.
Georgia Southern, in its first season under coach Clay Helton, became bowl-eligible by beating Appalachian State 51-48 in double overtime in the final game of the season. Buffalo became eligible for postseason by with a last-minute 23-22 win over Akron in their season finale.
"I feel like you have two teams who really had to fight their way in," Helton said. "When you look at college football, only half the teams get the opportunity to play one more game together and we are honored to be able to do that."
Vantrease was a big reason for Georgia Southern's success. He passed for 3,901 yards and 25 touchdowns and was named third-team All-Sun Belt Conference. Vantrease engineered the team's dramatic 45-42 win over Nebraska on Sept. 10.
He threw for 1,861 yards and eight touchdowns in 10 games for Buffalo in 2021 and was the quarterback when Buffalo won the Camellia Bowl.
Buffalo linebacker James Patterson laughed and said, "I can't really wait to get after him and just show him that after all these years of him being in a red (non-contact) jersey, he's going to be in a different-colored jersey."
Georgia Southern had 11 other payers named all-conference, including tackle Khalil Crowder, wide receiver Khaleb Hood (80 receptions, 896 yards, three TDs) and linebacker Marques Watson-Trent (105 tackles), who each made the second team.
Buffalo had seven players named to the All-MAC team, including kicker Alex McNulty, linebacker Shaun Dolac (134 tackles, 4.5 sacks) and safety Marcus Fuqua (60 tackles, seven interceptions), a third-team AP All-America selection. McNulty, a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, was voted the conference's special teams player of the year and set a single-season record with 21 field goals.

Utah State and Memphis finished the regular season on opposite trajectories, but the two .500 teams will collide at the First Responder Bowl on Tuesday in Dallas.
Utah State (6-6) won five of its last seven regular-season games to qualify for a bowl game for the second straight season and 10th time in the past 12 years.
Memphis (6-6) lost five of its last seven games but secured a bowl berth for the ninth consecutive season, the longest active streak of any non-Power 5 team in the country.
"Love the matchup against Memphis," Utah State coach Blake Anderson said. "Really good football team."
The Aggies haven't played Memphis since 1977, but Anderson faced the Tigers in the 2020 season opener when he was coaching Arkansas State.
The 37-24 win by Memphis was also the first victory at the school for coach Ryan Silverfield.
"(I'm) familiar with those guys," Anderson said. "I have watched them play several times this year and know what kind of challenge that'll be."
The Aggies defeated three teams that earned bowl invitations this season: UConn, Air Force and San Jose State.
Utah State is led by junior quarterback Cooper Legas, who has completed 61.2 percent of his passes this season for 1,465 yards and 11 touchdowns with nine interceptions.
His favorite receiver has been Brian Cobbs, who has 70 receptions for 844 yards and four touchdowns this season.
Calvin Tyler Jr. rushed for 65 yards and a touchdown in Utah State's 42-23 loss to Boise State in the regular-season finale on Nov. 25, surpassing the 1,000-yard mark on the season for the first time in his five-year collegiate career.
"Got great respect for (Anderson) and what he's done at Utah State," Silverfield said. "We know that they are going to present a challenge. We know that they are only a year removed from an 11-win season. They've got an over 1,000-yard rusher and nine all-conference-type players."
Seth Henigan started every game this season at quarterback for Memphis. He has completed 63.8 percent of his passes for 3,275 yards and 19 touchdowns with eight interceptions.
The Tigers lost running back Brandon Thomas to a season-ending injury on Nov. 10 against Tulsa, leaving Jevyon Ducker and Asa Martin to carry the load against Utah State.
"They run the ball and run it extremely well," Anderson said.

Coastal Carolina is a team in transition, but the Chanticleers still want to make a good final impression when they oppose East Carolina in the Birmingham Bowl.
The Pirates hope to put a positive finishing touch on this season, something they were unable to do a year ago.
The teams meet Tuesday in Birmingham, Ala.
Jamey Chadwell left his coaching post with Coastal Carolina on Dec. 4 to become Liberty's head coach, so interim coach Chad Staggs, the defensive coordinator, will oversee the team for the bowl.
The Chanticleers (9-3) are trying to reach the 10-win mark for the third year in a row.
"It would be awesome to get another one," Staggs said.
East Carolina (7-5) hasn't won a bowl game in nine years, but the Pirates have put together consecutive winning records for the first time since 2013 and 2014.
"There's a lot of motivation to get down there and get the win," Pirates coach Mike Houston said.
Both teams have quarterbacks who have been largely adored by their teams and fans.
Record-setting Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall is expected to play in the Birmingham Bowl despite entering the transfer portal. McCall has thrown for 2,633 yards and 24 touchdowns with just two interceptions this year, giving him 8,019 passing yards, 78 TD passes and eight interceptions in four seasons with the Chanticleers.
"He should be fine for the bowl game," Staggs said. "He's tough as nails. He's a big competitor and I think the team rallies around that. He's going to still battle for his team. 'One last ride' type of thing is what he said."
Despite the changes around the Coastal Carolina program, the Pirates are preparing to see the Chanticleers at their best.
"We expect to see the Coastal that everybody has seen all season," Houston said.
East Carolina was set to play Boston College in last year's Military Bowl, but COVID-19 cases involving the Eagles nixed that game.
The Pirates have quarterback Holton Ahlers wrapping up a five-year career while playing for his hometown school. He has thrown for 3,408 yards and 23 touchdowns with five interceptions this season.
Staggs maintains that the Chanticleers are in a good mindset despite losing 45-26 to Troy in the Sun Belt Conference title game.
"I got them in the weight room and got them around each other and that's the best way to wipe away a game (such as that)," Staggs said. "It has been kind of business as usual."
That's how the players view it as well.
"We're going into this thing no different than any other game," Coastal Carolina linebacker Shane Bruce said. "I don't think from a mental standpoint we're going to be any different than how we have been all season."
Tim Beck, the offensive coordinator at North Carolina State, is set to take over as Coastal Carolina's head coach in 2023.
This will be the first football meeting between the Chanticleers and Pirates. East Carolina will be in Birmingham for a bowl for the third time, having lost to South Florida in December 2006 and to Florida in January 2015.

The Guaranteed Rate Bowl offers no guarantee when it comes to the best players taking the field on Dec. 27 in Phoenix.
Wisconsin (6-6) and Oklahoma State (7-5) have been hit with heavy attrition, but they'll continue their longstanding streak of bowl appearances when they meet two days after Christmas at the Arizona Diamondbacks' Chase Field. The Badgers have the third-longest streak at 21 and Oklahoma State is sixth at 17 consecutive bowl showings.
Among other commonalities: Each team lost a veteran starting quarterback to the transfer portal. Garret Rangel will quarterback the Cowboys with four-year starter Spencer Sanders gone, while either senior Chase Wolf (six pass attempts this season) or freshman Myles Burkett (five) will start for the Badgers in place of three-year starter Graham Mertz.
Wisconsin has a new coach in Luke Fickell and the change may have fueled some of the opt-outs. In addition to players placing their name in the portal, six Badgers have skipped out of the game in favor of preparation for the 2023 NFL Draft, including star linebacker Nick Herbig (11 sacks) and nose tackle Keeanu Benton (10 tackles for loss).
Oklahoma State also lost leading tackler Mason Cobb -- a linebacker with 96 stops -- and leading rusher Dominic Richardson (543 yards) to the portal.
Cowboys coach Mike Gundy sees the game as an opportunity to notch a victory. Oklahoma State has lost five of seven games since a 5-0 start
"Every game we play is important," Gundy told reporters. "And I've always said this, we try to instill basic values and core principles in our team from Day One. It doesn't make a difference who we are playing, where we are playing, what the records are, we're playing in a game
"And so we all signed up for this. We have an obligation to compete, to prepare, to play the very best we can, coach the very best we can, put the best product on the field every game."
Meanwhile, Fickell, who was hired away from Cincinnati, is serving in a figurehead role for this game.
Fickell told reporters that former interim coach Jim Leonhard will run the defense and offensive coordinator Bobby Engram will lead the offense. Fickell has made hires to replace both men for next season.
Inside linebacker Maema Njongmeta, the team's leading tackler with 88, said he likes Fickell's approach for this game.
"His messaging has been really consistent," Njongmeta said. "‘Hey, I'm here for you guys. I'm not trying to do anything to change anything. I'm learning about you. I'm not trying to control anything just yet. I understand I have to let you guys finish this season off.'"
One star playing in the game is Badgers running back Braelon Allen, who has rushed for 1,126 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.
Another is Cowboys safety Jason Taylor II, who has 87 tackles and is tied for second nationally with six interceptions.
This is the first meeting between the programs.
